Can I install this with Amer Std Serin shower arm?

I have an Amer Std Serin Shower arm and showerhead. Can I install this diverter btw wall and head and leave it in place (off) to use occasionally with detachable hose for dog washing? Don't want to have a serious hose attached all the time because it is a small shower space.
