Would this rake also be good to do light thatching on a very small section of grass. I used weed and feed on it several weeks ago and am just seeing more grass than weeds. The house was vacant for 2 years and mowed only when needed during that time though I have been trying to clear the dead cut grass out when I am feeling well enough. Thanks
Asked by: Kat
I'd recommend a soft rake for small light thatching job. Coming down with the rake on an angle pulling to the right or left in fast short stokes will work. Pulling directly down and toward you like raking leaves does not accomplish anything.

16-Tine Double Play Bow Rake with Fiberglass Handle is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 185.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for heavy brush I picked up this rake for 18 dollars thinking I spent too much. The basic hard rake I bought at Wal-Mart snapped after only a year costing only 8 dollars. The new Ames rake hands down out performs but the best part is the 15 yr warranty. We will see if this new rake breaks after next spring but I don't see myself getting anything else anytime soon.

This is a first rate, well designed and lightweight rake that made our lawn top soil raking and feathering and driveway stone spreading and dressing easy tasks. We purchased this double play rake because the shorter teeth can be used for dressing the soil and rock beds without resorting to a larger flexible rake for feathering. I liked the rake's feel, it seems that the longer teeth's angle made moving the topsoil and rocks easy while the shorter teeth made finessing a cinch. My wife like the rake because it's light and the short teeth are, as she noted - "just the right height."

I bought the rake a year ago and used it for loosening up soil. After one month I noticed the rake was bent where it inserts into the shaft, the green plastic retaining thing cracked, and the entire row of prongs bent upward from raking except the outmost ones. I attempted contacting Ames for a refund/replacement two weeks ago and so far no response. I also bought two Ames shovels at the same time, and they too are broken. Don't waste your money!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Failed after about 3 years, replaced under warranty A good quality light to medium duty bow rake. Not for commercial or heavy use. It is listed as fiberglass, but it is wooden, with a fiberglass wrapper over the wood handle, it is not solid fiberglass- at least at the tine end. The bow (metal tine) end of the rake will flex and bend if you push or pull too hard and if you use a chopping motion to loosen clods of dirt. After about 3 years of ownership and moderate use (raking and leveling dirt and pushing mulch around the garden), the wood under the fiberglass sheath failed at the end where the metal rake portion (tines) enters, and the fiberglass split. Good news is the 15 year warranty. I called the number that was still on the label on the rake handle, the call lasted all of 3 minutes- received clear concise instructions to photograph the rake, labels and damage and e-mail them to the address given to me. I am currently awaiting the replacement to arrive. This company has a great warranty that they honor without hesitation.

The handle is not as rigid for commercial use in my opinion. I like the new angle of the tines. It is better than the traditional design that the tines are curved in more. The revered side of the rake is good for leveling the ground, dirt, and barks - in my case.

This rake is very sturdy, great for cleaning up a yard that went untended for about a year, cleared out all the leaves and weeds, sturdy enough but not so heavy that it wears out my arms.

It does a fair job, however, the head tends to bend if you are trying to "push" dirt or gravel and the head actually came out of the handle after only a year of use.
