Customer Questions & Answers

What is the width of the blade at the bottom of the spade?

The specs say the blade is over 7 inches wide but I can't tell if that is at the top where you put your foot, or at the bottom where it penetrates the soil.
Asked by: WeekendGardener63

16 in. D-Handle Drain Spade is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 67.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Did the job Had to quickly dispose of my SO's pet tarantula. Had the fragile arachnid out playing with her when she tried to sink her fangs in me, like her owner. I accidentally threw her against the wall and she popped like a gory balloon. This drain spade enabled me to quickly, yet unceremoniously, bury her in the nearby park. Than goodness I had this drain spade. Thanks Ames, now she'll never know.

If your looking for a light duty shovel it does the job, the blade and wide foot pad are great, the handle however made it all of 6 months before snapping at the base... I bought a poly handle and its been great ever since but maybe spending a for more bucks the 1st time would have saved me some headache in the long run.

Only thing that I didn't like was the handle felt like it was going to snap if I dug too deep and pulled back on the handle. So I would have to dig a little shallower than I originally wanted, creating a longer job but otherwise it did what I needed it to do.

I had to shovel for a couple of weeks, and unfortunately I've had to use our several times. It has a nice wide platform at the top for pushing with your feet. Overall it seems sturdy enough but I would recommend sharpening it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Speed with foot support The top edge of the blade is bent over by about a half-inch perpendicular to the blade itself. This provides excellent foot support for pushing the blade down through hard packed soil. This is an excellent feature.

Easily penetrates the clay and allows a deep section of dirt to be removed with each attempt. Of course, also good in and around one's garden.
