Ames makes great yard tools and this is no exception. This shovel (spade) is a bit smaller which makes it ideal for planting potted vegetable plants. I found it perfect for planting tomatoes and pepper plants in my barrel garden. It is a nice size and weight and is covered by a 15 year warranty! It has a hardwood shaft, a plastic handle, and the blade says "USA Forged". This tool will be handy for many years to come!

I was looking for a shorter shovel to work in raised beds and this one is great for it. Its on the smaller size which is good for working in tighter areas. I was having trouble using a typical shovel, being too long or too wide in smaller spaces. The blade on the model I had had a real weight to it, and I used it to cut through a lot of weeds. It has an overall good balance to the tool too, with a heavier ended blade and a much lighter top. The blade was also forged in the USA and you could tell it was a much stronger steel than on some garden tools that use metal that you can almost bend with your hand. The rivets also seemed good and the handle was a solid hardwood not some easily broken softwood.I recommend this tool, especially if you have a raised garden. One thing that I did find is the plastic rivet part did not look that strong, I worried when going into some heavy clay area if I put too much pressure if it would snap.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Larry Good little garden spade
It is a relatively light weight short shovel (42 ½” long) and has a comfortable plastic handle. The wooden handle size is 26.75 inches. I've been using this shovel for placing annuals in my planting beds. The foot step is well sized and the tempered shovel edge is not sharpened, but it works fine in sandy soil. If you really want to dig holes, buy a standard size round pointed shovel. I would not try to use it as a pry bar. If you really want to pry up things such as large roots I suggest buying a fiberglass handle steel shovel.

Nice quality spade for gardening. What i really like about this is the rounded edge of the shovel. Not pointed like a traditional spade. This a good because it gives you more control when digging around plants and shrubs that you want to avoid damaging. The plastic handle feel strong and sturdy when digging and the wood is nice and robust so you will get a lot of use out of this spade shovel. This is not a shovel for digging in tough soil but as I stated it works great for maintaining your garden.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Maddy Nice size for raised garden
I recently built a raised garden in my yard and I needed a shorter shovel/spade to make digging easier for the higher level. This Ames 27.75" spade fits the bill petfectly. It is much shorter and of lighter weight than a standard size spade so it is easier to maneuver in a raised bed. It has a tempered steel blade that makes it strong and durable. I was using a hand shovel for digging before, which meant a lot of bending over. My back feels so much better since I have this perfectly sized shovel for my raised beds.
