48 in. Wood Handle Round Point Shovel is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 16.

I purchased this shovel a year ago and it seemed flimsy at the 'foot rest' region. Then I started noticing stress fractures in the metal spade it self at these locations with typical minimal use. Then recently, I was simply digging into our lawn and the fractures completely split half way down the spade like cutting butter. I also bought the matching square point shovel and that is having the same effect so far. Flimsy and stress fractures. Ames would not honor the warranty so I bought a different manufacturer here: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Razor-Back-49-in-Fiberglass-Handle-Super-Socket-Digging-Shovel-2594400/204476140 The above razorback is WAY more sturdy and cuts into material like a good spade should. A little more cost up front but already has proven to me that it's worth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Last Shovel You Will Buy! This shovel has a lot of thoughtful features which show very good engineering design. The top of the handle has a cushioned area about ten inches in length for easy and comfortable gripping (see picture). Secondly, the top of the spade has six perforations with "starred" grip points around those holes to give your foot a firm grip on the top of the spade when you are pushing down on the blade (see pictures) . Your foot will not slip off and you will not lose momentum in digging in. The wooden handle is substantial and well-finished. This is really an "heirloom" tool which will be passed on for generations, in my opinion. Great price too! I highly recommend this shovel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A sturdy tool The finish on the wood is not 'furniture grade', a bit rough. However that is perfectly OK for a shovel. Some 200-400 grit sandpaper could easily fix that, if you wish. Took me ~ 20 seconds to knock off the sharp spots in the finish... You should be wearing appropriate footwear (and gloves) using this tool. The bent edges of the shovel blade backside have 'unique' anti-slip features. (See picture) The three punched holes in the lip of the blade provide excellent 'traction' for a boot. Works well for my general needs.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It works, after a bit. It arrived with a BLUNT tip! I'm not kidding! Tried it, not impressed. Took it into the garage and used an angle grinder on the front end. It digs much better now! I dug a small hole to get dirt to fill a hole in my lawn, it has Great traction on the steps where my feet pushed it into the ground. The shelf ears did not bend at all. It has a piece of plastic around between the wood and the metal, I'm guessing it helps, there was no wood strain noise when I was digging. I'm a firm believer if, it's not broken, don't fix it. Well, this shovel might be a different material then the shovels from 100 years ago, I don't know.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great for digging holes for shrubs and for incorporating compost into garden beds I have a number of garden beds where I grown shrubs, various seasonal flowers as well as herbs. Apart from the shrubs, most of these are annuals and I need to remove last year's plants and re-plant new every year. I had been using a flat edge shovel and a spade but it was slow going as our soil is mostly clay. In addition to digging out the soil, I also incorporate fresh compost into the beds during the growing season to help the plants flourish. I've recently started using the Ames wood handle round point shovel and found that I could dig much more quickly and effectively because of the pointed shape of the shovel. It's also comparatively easy to turn the soil with the new compost because of this shape as well. I've been really pleased with the results and plan on using this for years to come for these purposes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No problem; works great I read a lot of the reviews on this shovel and we gave it a really good workout (digging out a large area in the back yard). There were no issues with the shovel. The digging went without a hitch; blade was sharp. The handle showed no sign of weakness; no breaks or cracks or other similar sounds . . . The spade didn't bend or tear. It's possible the product has improved and the price is right.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Shovel! Who doesnt need a shovel in their tool shed. Its always something that comes in handy when working on the lawn or labor work. I needed to do some cleaning around some bush areas of my yard and this shovel worked perfectly. Its light enough that it may not need much lifting but sturdy enough to create a good dent into whatever it is you need to do with it. I recommend this shovel!
