Questions & Answers

Will this post slide over an in-ground wood 4x4?

Asked by: DoubleDuck
Do not know. Unwilling to buy a 4x4 wood post and post-hole digger to find out. It does not seem likely, since wood posts are not exactly square or an exact size.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Too short The post is well made and looks good, but is too short. According to the USPS website "mailboxes should be installed at a height of 41-45 inches from the road surface to the bottom of the mailbox." With the post being 46.5", at a height of 41" only 5.5" are left for anchoring. At 45" above ground a ridiculous 1.5" is left. I cheated and put my box at 38", giving me a whopping 8.5" in hte ground. The hole is 15" wide and filled with concrete and there is rebar going up into the pole, I also drllled holes in the post to put two 12" pieces of rebar into it horizontally. It still wobbles. Not worth the price. I would not buy again, nor can I recommend it to others.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A MUST HAVE for your mailbox This post is required if you want your mailbox to be free standing and not enclosed in concrete or stone. I needed a mailbox with a lock (Architectural Mailboxes Oasis Post Mount Mailbox) and found one for $98 at Home Depot. The box did not specify clearly you need to purchase a post. The box showed one picture with the mailbox on a post and another with it encased in stone. I did not see the posts at the store so I ordered it online. Fortunately, it did ship quickly. The post is very heavy and durable. Once it got cemented in from the bottom, the post was solid and the mailbox was very sturdy, barely moves. Overall great product, both mailbox and post.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Could be built a little longer This post is built very strong and well powder coated. Only problem is it's length...In meeting the USPS letter box height requirements only allows for 11 - 12 inches of post to be buried. I would have preferred another 4 - 5 inches below ground for extra strength.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great Quality - Poor Design Wanted 1st-rate mailbox. Done. Needed 1st-rate matching post. No way. Home Depot is for do-it-yourselfers. Does that include those not caring to buy yet more tools we'll only use once (concrete, mixing container, posthole auger)? The post is FAR too short to be set into ground. It's 4" sq., to replace old post (3.5" sq.). After heavy rain, ground was soft enough to wriggle the old post back and forth, making 4" square hole & pulling out old post. Old post is hollow like this one. After pulling the old post, found it had a "post anchor" over 2' long mounted INSIDE the old post. The anchor-&-post combo worked well, needing a post-sized hole only a few inches underground; anchor could be pounded into ground with a hammer. No anchor available for the new Archtectural post. ONLY way to install new post is concrete. - Before interstate move, shed dozens of almost-never-used tools rather than pay movers to lug them 450 miles. - Always avoid concrete for setting posts. This superstrong post in concrete might withstand being hit by a car. However, it's so short that isn't certain. Also, you could be sued for setting a post in concrete in a public right-of-way ... even if the driver's fault, this post could land you in court. If this product is for true do-it-yourselfers WITHOUT special tools rusting idly around the homestead, it should need only a hammer to install. (I kept a hand-held sledge.). That would mean no heavy tools or concrete AND being more forgiving if hit by a car. Great idea. Outstanding quality. Poor combination of length and lack of post anchor. Otherwise, would have gotten 5 stars easily.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This is not a complete pole. you still need a 4x4 post that it slides over. I mistakenly though this was a complete pole. The entire pole is 47 inches, and post guidelines want the mailbox to be 41-45 inches. This does not give you enough material underground to hold. So, I believe this is being sold more as a veneer, like several other mailbox poles being sold. A 4x4 pole will fit inside it, and you really need a 4 foot, 4x4 ideally . I wound up buying some angle with the holes in it and drilled and bolted it to this pole. I did not want anything organic in the ground. I extended it by ~2 feet and set it in concrete. My finished pole came out 43 inches and is completely sturdy. I'm happy with the finished product. The bronze pole matches my mailbox perfectly and has a very simplistic look. I also liked it was powder coated and not regular paint. I also replaced the hex bolts it came with to secure the mailbox, with carriage bolts, 3/8 x 1 inch. I had to drill out my actual mailbox's holes a little, for the carriage bolts modification. But I do not have four large hex nut sticking out, in the mailbox. I used the rest of the washers and nuts that came with it. In the end, a lot more work then I though. I was just expecting to dig a hole and set it, and fill it with quick setting cement.
