Customer Questions & Answers

Will this post slide over an in-ground wood 4x4?

Asked by: DoubleDuck
Do not know. Unwilling to buy a 4x4 wood post and post-hole digger to find out. It does not seem likely, since wood posts are not exactly square or an exact size.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Too short The post is well made and looks good, but is too short. According to the USPS website "mailboxes should be installed at a height of 41-45 inches from the road surface to the bottom of the mailbox." With the post being 46.5", at a height of 41" only 5.5" are left for anchoring. At 45" above ground a ridiculous 1.5" is left. I cheated and put my box at 38", giving me a whopping 8.5" in hte ground. The hole is 15" wide and filled with concrete and there is rebar going up into the pole, I also drllled holes in the post to put two 12" pieces of rebar into it horizontally. It still wobbles. Not worth the price. I would not buy again, nor can I recommend it to others.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A MUST HAVE for your mailbox This post is required if you want your mailbox to be free standing and not enclosed in concrete or stone. I needed a mailbox with a lock (Architectural Mailboxes Oasis Post Mount Mailbox) and found one for $98 at Home Depot. The box did not specify clearly you need to purchase a post. The box showed one picture with the mailbox on a post and another with it encased in stone. I did not see the posts at the store so I ordered it online. Fortunately, it did ship quickly. The post is very heavy and durable. Once it got cemented in from the bottom, the post was solid and the mailbox was very sturdy, barely moves. Overall great product, both mailbox and post.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well, it's a post... I purchased this post to go with the mailbox by the same manufacturer. The colors matched exactly, the metal is heavy enough gauge that it is pretty solid and with the paint I do not see a need for maintenance for some time to come. I intend to eventually put a planter or shrubs around it to spiff it up a bit. I haven't measured but am pretty sure a majority of two piece planters will fit around the base when the time comes and that is the route I go. The biggest gripe I would have is that I wish it were a bit taller to allow more of a base to sit in the concrete I put it in. For my local regulations (be sure to check the street proximity and height requirements or your town / neighborhood) a majority of the post needed to be above ground allowing only about 6 inches of post in concrete. Maybe that is enough and maybe I'm just a guy who prefers to overbuild everything? Regardless, now that the 'crete has dried it is solid to the touch and does not wobble at all. Much more sturdy than most wood or plastic posts on the street I'd guess.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Could be built a little longer This post is built very strong and well powder coated. Only problem is it's length...In meeting the USPS letter box height requirements only allows for 11 - 12 inches of post to be buried. I would have preferred another 4 - 5 inches below ground for extra strength.
