Good question.
On mine, there is a little clip on the inside of the door where to postman puts your incoming mail. You just put your outgoing mail under the clip, it is protected. Have not used it yet, but is seems OK, and there is the red flag to alert the postman that you have outgoing mail.

Answer:
There is a clip about 2 inches long in the door to the mailbox that you clip your letters in. It works great, the postal employee opens the door to put your mail in and the letters left for pick up are right there.

Answer:
The top part that opens for the mail to be dropped in to the box (see the second picture, showing the package being dropped in to the box) has a small clip on the back of the door for outgoing mail. So your outgoing mail will not be secure.

Customer Reviews

Rated 3.5 out of 5 by 52 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Okay so far After some drive-by thieves were stealing mail from mailboxes in the neighborhood our adjacent neighbors and we decided to get locking mailboxes. One neighbor made a custom holder for all three. It sure looks better than the variety of brands and sizes and heights that were there before. If you have a lot of catalogs, magazines, large envelopes, etc. this might not work for you if the mailman doesn't make an effort to double check if the items have fallen into the lower locked area. We no longer put outgoing mail in the box since that raised flag seemed to be an invitation to opportunistic thieves. January 7, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Can be broken into easily After months of mail theft, I assumed this product would prevent mail theft. However, the mail thieves broke into the box very quickly, probably with a crowbar or screwdriver. The metal lock simply bent back. I reset it myself with little effort, in short the metal on the lock is so cheap it bends easily. April 4, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by I recommend this one I am very happy with the mailbox! It was easy to install the keys work nicely and it is a very nice size. August 2, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by NOT A SECURE MAILBOX We THOUGHT this was a secure mailbox because it locked - it's actually a step up from those standard rounded-top mailboxes with no lock. However, someone pried ours open fairly easily with either a screwdriver or a crowbar, and stole our mail. I replaced it with a mailbox that's designed so it can't be easily pried. It cost twice as much but is definitely worth it. August 11, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent!!! Very good locking mailbox. Especially for the money. Reasonably sturdy and seems to have a good security trap door. The receiving side is very large and was able to receive over a weeks worth of mail at one time. Time will tell on durability, but after 6 months it looks ok July 11, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by solid build Mailbox stands tall and mounts on bottom. Sturdy construction. Magnet closed door on top. Many mounting holes in bottom of box will work with seperately purchased mounting plate. Biggest problems are locksmiths have no blanks for keys, also does not attach well to 4x4 wood post. Recommend cap board and shelf mounting brackets. May 6, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by The verdict is still out... We ordered the mailbox and post, both which arrived in a timely matter at our home. We waited to open the box until the day we were ready to dig the post hole and install. That is when we found that the top door did not stay closed because the magnetic piece on the door didn't actually touch the magnet on the box. Unfortunately, there was no way to fix it, as the magnet is evidently put on prior to the box being put together. There is a rubber ring around the opening, which if removed, the two would meet, however there were no instructions that said to remove the rubber ring. The box itself seems rather sturdy and next to impossible to steal mail from, which is why we purchased it. We returned the box to our local Home Depot with no problems, but unfortunately, they don't carry the color we want. So, we have re-ordered another box, and hope the magnet issue was just a fluke. If the new mailbox is fine, I will take this review down. April 9, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Easily broken into. The mailbox itself is nice, works well and we have never had an issue with functionality. However, we now know that with a wedge of some sort (screwdriver etc) the box can easily be pried open next to the lock. Thieves hit each of the same boxes down our street. April 26, 2016
