Hello Mick,
Thank you for reaching out! This post will fit over a pre-installed 4"x4", however, the Standard Post In-Ground is meant to go in the ground. We would suggest getting the Standard Post Surface-Mount instead, that way you can slide it over the existing post and you will not need to dig another hole for your new post. Please keep in mind that there are USPS regulations that determine how tall your post can be. This is determined by which mailbox is going on top of the post. That being said, there are two versions of the Standard Post Surface-Mount: short (item number: 5106) and long (item number: 5526). We suggest contacting your local postmaster to find out which length you will need. Please feel free to reach out again if you have any further questions or concerns at 310-374-5700 or at support@architecturalmailboxes.com. Thank you!

Based on USPS guidelines and recommended depths for posts (which commonly seems to be about 16-24 inches), it seems like the post isn't quite long enough...

Hi Rick,
Thank you so much for reaching out to us! If you have a standard sized mailbox and are installing it in flat ground, yes you are correct you will only need to position the post about 12 inches below ground level.
We recommend selecting and installing your post to meet USPS regulations for the height of the mailbox point of entry (where your mailman or mailwoman delivers your mail), 41 inches to 45 inches above road surface level. Please see the path below for their specifications.
https://www.usps.com/manage/mailboxes.htm
We recommend selecting and installing your post by installation location and your mailboxes point of entry (which varies by design). If your mailbox is uphill or downhill from the street level, your post needs may vary. In general, we recommend using the 5525 post (taller post) with the following architectural mailboxes: 5501, 5502, 5003, 5504, 5505, 5506, 5560, 5592, 5593, 7600, 7900, 8000, and 950020. We recommend 5100 (shorter post) for large parcel mailboxes like 5100, 6200, 6300, and 6700.
Please feel free to contact us directly by calling us at (310) 374-5700 or by emailing support@architecturalmailboxes.com with any further questions. Read Less

Answer:
Thank you for your inquiry. You will need concrete for the in-ground installation and you will need to confirm that your mailbox will work with a 4 x 10 inch bolt hole pattern which is the pattern on the mounting plate of the post. If you have further questions regarding installation or specifications, please contact the manufacturer at 800-464-7491 or info@architecturalmailboxes.com.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Well built Very stout product. Worked perfectly with my Epoch Designs Mail Boss box. Now my post and my mailbox are built like a tank. July 5, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Solid post Well manufactured. Will have to see how paint holds up over time. Only complaint is the 5/16 hex head bolts sent with the post. They should be round or oval headed so they don't stick up and block smooth loading of mail inside mailbox (also manufactured by Architectural Mailboxes). I had to go purchase correct ones. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by this product should be in all home depot stores!?!?! the products you have in your stores are mostly flimsy plastic & do not hold up for the most part - post's are'nt long enough for postal regulations & the prices for most of the plastic posts are expensive & do not compare to the metal one that i had to order because home depot won't put it in their stores - February 11, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Glad I bought this post I purchased this to mount a 5100 series box. I'm glad I bought this post and didn't use a wooden post with an adapter. I sunk it about 18" and used #80 sack of concrete. I let it set overnight and mounted the box the next morning. It is very solid and heavier gauge steel than the post sold in the store. Excellent powder coat too. Well packaged and comes in a plastic sleeve that helps keep it from getting banged up when you are installing it. Well worth the money and a must if you are using the bigger 5100 or 5103 series boxes. The shipping was fast and "free" with my order, I ordered it on Monday afternoon and it arrived on that Friday. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great addition Fits great! Looks great!! Strong and sturdy. Easy to mount December 29, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good solid post A post regarding a post....too funny. The post came on time. We like the post. It is the right height for sinking it in the ground about 18 inches. It is heavy duty, which we needed for the Oasis Jr mailbox. We would buy it again, no question. Would be nice if they were stocked in the store to avoid the shipping costs. November 1, 2010
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by As Described Product better than described. Originally ordered wrong color and customer service team was able to correct the situation with little to no hassle. July 16, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Sturdy and well-made This is a beautiful mailbox. I purchased all three pieces - Spreader plate, 2 mailboxes, and the stand. I checked everywhere and Home Depot had the best price October 21, 2014
