Answer:
Yes and no, although it has two handles, one for the engine and one for the clutch, the engine can only run if you keep pressing the motor handle or if you tie that handle to the frame, which I only do when at the end of the season I want the motor to run until the tank is empty, so I would not recommend doing that while you pick up sticks.

Yes. The engine bulb primer is located on the left side at the front of the engine, as you are behind the mower. I usually give my mower ptimper bulb three pumps and it starts right up.

Answer:
There are individual height adjustment on each of the 4 wheels, however, beware that the maximum cutting height is about 2.5 inches and there is no way to modify the wheels for a higher cut, for me that is too short, especially for summer hot days, so I am selling my unit just for that issue.

Can this lawn mower be stored vertically, on the two back wheels?

This question is from 21 in. Variable Speed Self-Propelled Swivel Wheel Mower

Earlier Ariens lawn mowers that look like this one had a special handle that folded flat with two supports near the rear wheels. The lawn mower could be stored vertically taking only about a foot along a wall.

Storing gasoline/oil powered equipment vertically is not a safe practice. Storing in this manner can result in gasoline/oil leakage and damage internal parts.

It is not recommended to store this mower in the vertical position as the oil will get into areas of the engine where it should not be.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 44 reviewers.
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Powerful, buyer beware The reason I am giving a 3 rating is as follows: I tested several mowers before buying this one because none of the others had sufficient pull for some of my hills, not very angled hills but this was the first self-propelled machine that I did not have to push on the hills, and the turning front wheels made it easier around trees and turns at the end of tracks. However, the price of this machine is over 2 or 3 times the price of other self propelled models, and I should expect such performance for the money. Within the first year one of the wheels broke, and the unit was very difficult to move on 3 wheels, and very heavy, I was told by Ariens that the wheels were superseded by model with a beer material, and of a larger diameter? They sent me two wheels with exactly the same plastic material, so I crossed my fingers and hoped that if I need more wheels I have the 3 years of warranty, but the ordeal of moving again the heavy unit and fixing it often was not one of my pleasures. It did not break again on the following two years, now out of warranty at almost 4. The engine did not start for two continue seasons and the repair shop had to adjust a cable that was considered not covered by the warranty, so the labor cost and the repetitive problem for the same issue was not another of my pleasures. My main issue with this machine is that for some estrange reason the maximum height for the cut is about 2.5 inches and there is now way to modify the design to lift the 4 wheels at least half inch more. Particularly on summer I do not want to cut my lawn so low, so I am giving up on this machine. July 31, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Powerful machine Yep, just like the other reviews state, it's heavy. Takes more personal torque (arm pulling) to start than I had expected, but starts on 3rd - 4th pull. Packs the bag full without leaving any residue on the ground. This baby will pull you up a hill. Due to castered front wheels doesn't do great cutting on hills going parallel with the hill, even with the one castered wheel locked. You'll also find that in the owners manual on-line on the Home Depot website. I use the second to slowest speed and it's just fine. Tried the highest speed to go from point A to point B and could not keep up. All in all an Excellent machine in Form, Fit, and Function. If I were to change any thing on the mower, it would be to lick both castered front wheels July 26, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Quality has deteriorated; won't buy another one... I had an earlier version of this mower several years ago and it was a GREAT mower... When I moved, I sold it to a friend. Worst mistake I ever made. Now, the same mower has turned into a so-so mower due to Ariens cheapening the product. Plastic wheels with an extremely hard rubber tread are not the quality one would expect from a push mower costing approximately $775. Found a mower of the same "former" quality with steel/ball bearing wheels. Sad, however, that the company sacrificed quality rather than perhaps increasing the price slightly so as not to resort to cheap plastic wheels prone to break frequently. May 12, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Nice heavy duty lawn mower! The mower itself is a bit heavy but with the swivel wheels makes it easy to maneuver around in tight landscaping. So far very happy and starts first time every time. Price is higher than most, but this lawn mower is built to last and with the Kawasaki motor it should run for a long time. June 27, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Waiting to use it. When the rain finally stopped, we got the opportunity to use the product. Takes some getting use to, but over all I believe the choice was a good one. A little on the heavy side, but we can adjust to that. May 24, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by cable problem I have had this mower over 2 years. I have had to replace my power cable three times May 21, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Bought this to replace the same model I first bought 16 years ago. First one still works but wanted a new one. Undoubtedly the finest made. Best lawnmower I have ever had, and I am 73 years old, so I have had a few. Swivel front wheels make following the landscape blocks and curbs so easy. Lots of power. If you put it on a faster speed you would have to jog to keep up with it, maybe even run. Starts first pull every time. Even the 16 year old one starts first pull. May 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A true work horse!!! This mower will power through anything, North Florida grass is thick and dense. This mower will mow the highest grass. I also have a Honda lawn mower and Ariens is a much better mower. It is over 15 years old and the only thing that has failed is the rear wheels have worn out. I just purchased a new set for $66 and it like a new mower again. This mower starts EVERY TIME on the FIRST PULL! March 27, 2016
