Answer:
Yes and no, although it has two handles, one for the engine and one for the clutch, the engine can only run if you keep pressing the motor handle or if you tie that handle to the frame, which I only do when at the end of the season I want the motor to run until the tank is empty, so I would not recommend doing that while you pick up sticks.

Yes. The engine bulb primer is located on the left side at the front of the engine, as you are behind the mower. I usually give my mower ptimper bulb three pumps and it starts right up.

Answer:
There are individual height adjustment on each of the 4 wheels, however, beware that the maximum cutting height is about 2.5 inches and there is no way to modify the wheels for a higher cut, for me that is too short, especially for summer hot days, so I am selling my unit just for that issue.

Can this lawn mower be stored vertically, on the two back wheels?

Earlier Ariens lawn mowers that look like this one had a special handle that folded flat with two supports near the rear wheels. The lawn mower could be stored vertically taking only about a foot along a wall.

It is not recommended to store this mower in the vertical position as the oil will get into areas of the engine where it should not be.

21 in. Variable Speed Swivel Wheel Gas Self Propelled Mower is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 44.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Powerful, buyer beware The reason I am giving a 3 rating is as follows: I tested several mowers before buying this one because none of the others had sufficient pull for some of my hills, not very angled hills but this was the first self-propelled machine that I did not have to push on the hills, and the turning front wheels made it easier around trees and turns at the end of tracks. However, the price of this machine is over 2 or 3 times the price of other self propelled models, and I should expect such performance for the money. Within the first year one of the wheels broke, and the unit was very difficult to move on 3 wheels, and very heavy, I was told by Ariens that the wheels were superseded by model with a beer material, and of a larger diameter? They sent me two wheels with exactly the same plastic material, so I crossed my fingers and hoped that if I need more wheels I have the 3 years of warranty, but the ordeal of moving again the heavy unit and fixing it often was not one of my pleasures. It did not break again on the following two years, now out of warranty at almost 4. The engine did not start for two continue seasons and the repair shop had to adjust a cable that was considered not covered by the warranty, so the labor cost and the repetitive problem for the same issue was not another of my pleasures. My main issue with this machine is that for some estrange reason the maximum height for the cut is about 2.5 inches and there is now way to modify the design to lift the 4 wheels at least half inch more. Particularly on summer I do not want to cut my lawn so low, so I am giving up on this machine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Powerful machine Yep, just like the other reviews state, it's heavy. Takes more personal torque (arm pulling) to start than I had expected, but starts on 3rd - 4th pull. Packs the bag full without leaving any residue on the ground. This baby will pull you up a hill. Due to castered front wheels doesn't do great cutting on hills going parallel with the hill, even with the one castered wheel locked. You'll also find that in the owners manual on-line on the Home Depot website. I use the second to slowest speed and it's just fine. Tried the highest speed to go from point A to point B and could not keep up. All in all an Excellent machine in Form, Fit, and Function. If I were to change any thing on the mower, it would be to lick both castered front wheels

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ariens 21 in. Classic Swivel Wheel Walk Behind Lawn Mower I love the engine and transmission in combination with the swivel front wheels. I love this machine. It is heavy but very well built and very easy to maneuver with the swivel wheels. No lifting the front to turn. I have owned an Ariens mower for a few years that I bought used, but this is my first new one. My son and brother love this mower as much as I do. It is very easy to start, Just prime and pull once and you are ready to roll. Unlike other self-propelled mowers that you really have to push along, this machine pulls its own weight and is a breeze. Best mower that I have ever owned

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Quality has deteriorated; won't buy another one... I had an earlier version of this mower several years ago and it was a GREAT mower... When I moved, I sold it to a friend. Worst mistake I ever made. Now, the same mower has turned into a so-so mower due to Ariens cheapening the product. Plastic wheels with an extremely hard rubber tread are not the quality one would expect from a push mower costing approximately $775. Found a mower of the same "former" quality with steel/ball bearing wheels. Sad, however, that the company sacrificed quality rather than perhaps increasing the price slightly so as not to resort to cheap plastic wheels prone to break frequently.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best self propelled lawn mower period. For those of you considering purchasing this machine let me give you an unabashed no-nonsense product review. My home is located on a three acre lot I mow twice a week with a high-end John Deere diesel powered riding mower. I needed to purchase a smaller self propelled machine to mow the front section of my yard (so not to damage the sod with a heavy weight rider). I did my research and decided on an Ariens. In short it is the best hand operated mower I have ever owned. The mower arrived at my doorstep in a few short weeks. The shipping container and inside packaging was acceptable. The machine was mostly assembled upon arrival. There was also oil in the crankcase, even though the outside of the shipping container stated the crankcase was empty. Gassed up the engine started after a few pulls. My first impression of the overall quality was excellent. Yes the mower is somewhat heavy, but not excessive. As many other owners have claimed, the speed control broke 5-minutes after the first tryout. The speed mechanism itself is quality made, however, the locking system is very poorly designed for such a high-end machine. Repairing the locking controls was an easy fix which can be accomplished in only a few minutes. This anomaly is a minor problem which should have been engineered correctly by the manufacturer in the first place. There have been enough complaints by others regarding this defect posted on this website. It is somewhat disturbing that the manufacturer has not addressed this issue after all the negative comments. Moving on, mowing is a breeze. The grass catcher bag holds a surprising amount of clippings. The bag itself is easily removed and reinstalled. I later tried the machine in mulch mode and couldn't be happier with the results. The quality of the cut is second to none. I have read several reviews from owners complaining about the turning radius. My response is hogwash! This machine turns on a dime and will give you change back. The front caster wheels are a joy and makes the machine a breeze to use in tight turns. Some have also complained about the weight of the machine being too heavy. My response, get a life and go to the gym. This is not a cheaply built underpowered lightweight machine. Yes its hefty, but very manageable. I'm well over 60 years old and I have no problem whatsoever maneuvering this machine. The engine is very powerful and even cuts wet grass with ease! Overall I am very satisfied with my purchase. I usually do not rate products for others to review unless I feel the product is worthy. In this case I felt compelled to rate this product due to some of the negative remarks I have read. I do my own due-diligence and usually do not pay much attention to reviews written by others with petty complaints usually caused by ignorance, laziness or both. This is a wonderful mower worthy of the purchase price if your looking for a well built (with the exception of the speed control) fuel efficient, powerful cutting machine that is easy to use. I would purchase it again even with the defective speed control.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent, wish I purchased it earllier! The Ariens 21" lawn mower's features are intuitive and simple. It starts on the first pull and the cut is nice and clean. I purchased the Ariens 21" lawn mower on-line. The customer service on-line rep was very helpful. It was shipped directly to my residence on-time and as promised. Highly recommended it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just the best! My current model just finished it's third season as good as new. It was a replacement for an almost identical one that lasted me 20 years! I was able to buy the standard model and transfer the front swivel wheels from the old one! It is American made and you can call their HQ to ask technical questions and have them answered is a super plus!
