My 1996 Craftsman riding mower finally died a few weeks ago...the wiring melted! Rather than deal with non-existent parts, my wife got online and ordered this 46" Ariens. The order went smoothly, arrival was timely, too (01 Dec 14). Came wrapped in plastic sheeting in a wooden crate. After uncrating, there really wasn't any assembly required...just grab the manual, READ IT, and go!
My first use was to mulch leaves in the backyard, and it worked well with the standard blades. I've since replaced them with the recommended Mulching Kit (Husqvarna Model # OEM46MK 46 in. Tractor Mulch Kit), which worked much better.
Overall, this seems to be a great deal for the price. 20 hp engine is more than enough, transmission seems strong, steering is tight and has a small radius, it even has headlights for that all-important night mowing!
Now here it is 18 Dec, and I just finished a few days of installing the snow blade kit that was recommended (MTD Model # OEM-190-833 46 in. Snow Blade). There is no way this blade is a direct install for this tractor without modifications to the tractor frame! Having already spent $300+ for this blade and opening the package to see what was in store, it seemed to late to return it...besides, I felt a challenge! The Instructions have a lot of pictures and sparse written clues, so you have to be able to visualize how the install will go. I'm a designer/graphic artist with over 30 years of architectural/industrial design under my belt, and I had difficulty understanding the drawings. If you do attempt this, note you will have to have access to a heavy-duty drill and a 9/16" or 1/2" bit to drill through the frame. I also had to fabricate/install a little diamond plate bracket to connect the mower to the plow mounting bracket to stiffen things up. The plan now is to review all I learned in this process and develop a solution that I'll send to Home Depot & MTD. I believe the addition of two flat plates that can be bolted to the side of the tractor frame will solve the issue. I'll report back later as things develop.

This is a great riding mower, especially for this price. Plenty of power. More power would just burn more fuel and I can't imagine anyone needing more than the 20hp provided.
I love the V-Twin. It's smoother and quieter than the single cylinders and should last longer as well.
Mine came crated as we had it delivered. The mower was completely assembled and well packaged. No dents, dings or scratches. Just add fuel and go for it!
We did have to adjust the deck. Front to back height was fine but one side was lower than the other. Not a big deal.
Love the adjustable seat. My dad has stiff knees so getting on and off with the old riding mower was difficult for him. But not only does this Ariens not have a tunnel or center hump, but the seat easily slides forward and back. This allow my dad to slide the seat all the way back when he's finished mowing, giving him much more room to get off and then back on next time. Then he simply slides the seat forward to where he wants it.
Sometimes it's the little things that make a big difference.
Easy to use, comfortable, does a great job of mowing (You really want 4 anti-scalping wheels instead of the 2 you usually get with some mowers).

I purchased this tractor a year ago and have used it throughout the seasons. I bought the Ariens for a couple of reasons. One, it had the B&S twin cylinder engine. Two, it has an all metal hood (not plastic). Three, it was hydromatic and it had the reverse mowing switch. A lot of tractors today don't! I use it to mow the tight areas around my orchard, ditches, trees and bushes where my big tractor and mower cant get into. It is also used to pull a yard sweeper, haul water to my wife's 9 flower gardens, firewood and other projects. It has been very dependable and by doing a little preventive maint. on it, it should last a long time. It cuts the grass very well and the blades seem to hold up as well. One minor problem with this mower is the deck height control arm. It likes to jump out of its slot if a bump is hit. I mow at the same height all the time, so two pieces of wood and a bolt in the adjustment slot keeps it from going lower and scalping my lawn. Overall a very good tractor at a good price (yes, Home Depot may negotiate that with you).

I purchased this tractor to mow 1.5 acre yard. So far it is extremely quiet and does a great job. The 20HP Briggs twin cylinder engine is great. I looked at Cub Cadets also and spoke to 3 friends that had them and all had problems and would not buy them again.

Mower runs very quietly. Cut span is enormous. seat is comfortable. Gas tank is huge so I do not have to keep stopping and refilling. Cruise control is an added plus when mowing my bottom half of my land. Cup holder is also a plus as I can take my water with me. I towed my old mower with it with no problem. The gas and brake petal took some getting used to because my last mower was hand operated but I like the position of the petals. The cutting lever is above the steering wheel so I just have to reach up and push or pull it to engage or disengage the cutting blades. It rides a bit bumpy but I think the tires have too much air. I have to attempted to let any air out. When mowing my field I bounce.. Seat is very comfy but is a bit slippery. I am going to purchase a seat cover. does not go well on banks if you try to go sideways because you will slide out of the seat even on small banks but going up and down works great. Has a setting on the key switch were you can tell the mower to shut off the blades if you put it in reverse but you can switch it to on so you can cut going backwards also. Overall I LOVE this machine.. I call it my tractor.
