Answer:
Small engines are no longer rated in hp by manufacturers due to inaccuracies. Instead they are rated by torque and volume.

Answer:
The 250cc B&S engine puts out 11.5lbs of gross torque which equals approx. 7.8hp. In the old days this engine would have been called anything from an 8hp to a 9hp (maybe even a 10hp). Add in the overhead valves, serrated augers and 14" impeller this unit likely has more actually snow blowing and ice chopping power than most pre-2000 model year 10-12hp snowblowers.

Answer:
I just bought same model. You bet it is self driven. Does not have independent differential like the fancy models - meaning this model has a solid, locked axle...both tires pull forward together. Some models have ID, meaning for turning purposes, one tire can stop and spin while the other one drives forward to assist in turning, etc.

It will be delivered to a local dealer who will uncrate it and assemble it. Then they will deliver it to your garage. This service is available to people who have an Ariens dealership in their local area.

Rated 4.7 out of 5 by 32 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by it great A few years ago I purchase a similar snow blower from sears, which never ran right. The second year I had it, I could get it started and paid $160.00 for a service call. The only thing they did was add an additive to the gas, which got it going. When I purchase the Ariens deluxe, home depot had it shipped to someone locally who made sure it was setup correctly. After the machine was correctly setup, they called me to arrange a date and time for delivery. When it was delivered, I was shown how to use the machine. The snow blower has an electric start, the pull start is easy to use and start on the 1st pull every time. I would definitely recommend the Ariens. October 18, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A great and unexpected experiance! Ariens is good stuff. My previous Deluxe 24 was a 1984 model that served me well for 26 years. All of the Ariens dealers in my area were selling this model for the same price. So I ordered it from HD because they matched a 10 % off coupon from another big hardware chain. I expected to have to assemble it myself after a tail gate delivery to my home. But, to my surprise, the unit was shipped to a local dealer who put it together, made sure it ran properly and delivered it to my door! I didn't expect this kind of treatment from a "big box store". I wouldn't think twice about to ordering through them again. Thanks HD for a great deal October 17, 2011
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Ariens beats the snow Bought this machine in 2011. Storm Nemo gave me my first chance to use it. With 14" of snow on the ground I thought this would be a good test. The ariens ate up the snow like a snow eating beast. I did my driveway, sidewalk and apron with ease. It was actually so easy I did my neighbors driveway and sidewalk, all on one tank of gas. I saw the man across the street fight with the wall of snow on his driveway apron, lesser machine, he watched in awe as my ariens just ate it up and spit it out. Never clogged as I used dry film spray. Proud it is made in the USA! This is a big machine but with the 6 forward and 2 reverse speeds it handles like a baby carriage. February 9, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by very competent machine My unit came fully assembled and only required gas to be fully functional. Started right up first pull and produced a nice ,mellow exhaust note, not to loud. The first storm for my Ariens Deluxe was 14 inches of wet, heavy snow which increased to 21 inches deep at the end of my driveway after the town plows went by. This machine handled this slushy snow with ease and didn't even require locking both wheels on my flat driveway. The discharged snow was thrown 30 plus feet as needed by this powerful unit and I was able to control the machine easily even when using only one hand. I would rate this as an ideal choice for any homeowner . Can't argue with American made either. October 31, 2011
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A tornado in snow Great model after week of research to replace my 5yr old John Deere that sadly just didn't handle Wisc snow like I wanted. (And I'm a huge JD supporter!) Instant pull start - has electric but not needed - that pulls and fires right away. Amazing the quality of the build - welded seems and the industry-only cast bearings and case are priceless. Don't fool yourself - without them, your axle will wear prematurely. I love my 24" because it is as large as the 28 & 30 in terms of power and simply is easier to manuver and store. Only product I know that has maintained its quality for 40+ years! September 28, 2011
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by On line order Impressed with the Ariens product. Much more durable than a std low end model. Electric start is nice optional feature. Pull start is easy. Light is a great benefit for early morning or evening work. It does throw snow 50 feet. I will be in great shape when next snow fall arrives. Was pleasently surprised with how easy the on line order was managed. Snow Blower was delivered to a local dealer for prep and then a scheduled delivery was made to my home with a quick product review. Very easy purchase. January 21, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Hands down, the best snowblower in its class I researched and researched snow blowers for months trying to decide which one would be the best for me. I looked at every model, engine manufacturer, user reviews, professional reviews and model history; but in the end it all came down to an old gentleman who repairs snow blowers (and sells used models) for a living. He works out of his garage and has been at it for 30-35 years. When I asked him about snow blowers his answer was simple; avoid plastic, avoid aluminum & avoid gadgets. He went on to say "I fix a lot of snow blowers, including Ariens. The difference is most blowers that I fix are 2-3 years old, some older, but the Ariens I seem to fix are 20 years old and they just need a little TLC." I chose the Deluxe 24 and couldn't be happier. When it's all said done research and reviews do not compare to wisdom. November 12, 2011
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Did not work properly out-of-the-box The speed selector on my snowblower did not function properly right out-of-the-box - it was stuck on the highest forward setting regardless of selector position. Rather than lug the whole unit back to the store, I called Ariens tech support and worked with them to discover that the friction disc assembly which drives the snowblower was disconnected from the speed selector fork. I don't see how this could have happened during shipping so this seems to be a case of mediocre assembly and quality control at Ariens. The staff at Ariens were very unapologetic about the whole incident. Also it is worth noting that the recoil on the engine manual start cable doesn't always engage. The engine also backfires when lowering the engine speed. Overall, I expected far better considering how much I paid for this unit. December 16, 2011
