Answer:
If you have a 2 stage propelled snowblower, then you should have skids shoes to allow it to move smoothly. It might actually save a little time as it will move more smoothly.

Answer:
Not required, but probably a good idea.
Any scraping of your driveway by the shoes or the scraper blades will loosen the surface stones of an asphalt driveway.

I would still use them to reduce the chances of scratching and gauging the drive.
Plus will help to keep the blacktop sealant intact.

I just purchased Ariens Non-Abrasive Skid Shoes Model # 72600300 (Home Depot SKU # 999783) and they were sold as a pair with mounting bolts, nuts, and washers. I used to replace standard skid shoes on newly purchased Compact 22, Ariens 920013 (ser# > 35000).

Measure the distance between your two attachment bolts. If they are 3" apart on-center, the skids should fit.

If you have the original steel shoes on your snowblower throw them in the garbage these plastic shoes save you from rust stains on your driveway, the snowblower rolls along smoother, they last longer and you won't have rust stains from the skids in your garage. Easiest upgrade you can make on your snowblower especially if you have a concrete driveway. Just do it.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because my kit did not contain the necessary hardware and my local HD did not have any more in stock. I was able to call HD customer service and they put me in touch with Ariens who is now sending me out a new hardware set this week. (The original bolts are not be long enough in the back to fully secure the bolt due to the thickness of the blower housing.) The good news is, the blower slide freely on the driveway and does NOT leave any kind of scrapping marks on the driveway, sidewalk and garage floor plus there is no rust on my garage floor. I should have bought these years ago!!!

I was not happy with my new Ariens Snow-Thro Deluxe 28 snow blower with Auto-Turn. The metal skids kept digging into the pavement, which on my driveway is uneven. The digging in would not let me go in a straight line due to the Auto-Turn feature wanting to pull me in the direction of the skid that had dug in. The Non-Abrasive Skid Shoes solved this problem though it bugged me that I had to spend and additional $38 after tax to fix it. It would be my recommendation that these Skid Shoes be the standard ones. They would work on any surface and Ariens would have fewer unhappy customers.
