On my unit the lever to change the chute direction cannot be changed unless the blades are engaged. This is an extreme design defect.

Answer:
Not sure which machine you have, if it is the Ariens ProPath 21in EC than you are wrong my friend.... I just used it yesterday, the chute direction rotates no problem, the issue is the top part of the chute direction which directs the snow to be thrown close by or 20t away, that is manual, which is stupid.

Answer:
There is no correlation between the auger engagement and the discharge chute lever and one does not need to be engaged for the other to work. You may want to make sure that nothing is binding where the chute rotates over the housing. If you notice it binding you may be able to loosen the tension or you may need to take it to a dealer for service.

Rated 4.5 out of 5 by 50 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A great snow thrower for the price Had a Toro before. It doesn't even compare to this. The Path-Pro is a better machine. Starts easily using electric start or manual pull. Shoots snow a good distance. A good price and a good warranty. January 19, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Nice machine but one major, major flaw OK. Let me start by saying I owned a Snow-Tek for two seasons that thing was a beast. LOVED IT!!! Now, this one, the Ariens Path-Pro... used it yesterday on about 6in. of heavy wet snow, it did a great job, no issues whatsoever... plus the accumulation of the city snow plows at the edge of the driveway was handled easily. My driveway is 20x50, I did it in about 1 hour, it got cleaned to the asphalt, nice. Having written all that, I am going to try to return this machine. If homedepot takes it back, it would be AWESOME. WHY? Because the top part of the chute. which adjusts so you can through the snow nearby or 20ft away is manual. You have to go around the machine, release the knob, adjust the height, tighten the knob and continue snow throwing... well, I had to do that way to often for my liking. It is just not proper planning from Ariens on this part... it is annoying, extremely annoying to have to stop, adjust, continue, 1 minute later, stop again, adjust.... NEVER AGAIN!!! If you think you will not be bothered by that, go ahead and get it, it is a nice machine, starts on the first try, easy to assemble, nice little powerful machine. For me, no....This is going back. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Path Pro SS21EC At first, buying it without using it first I was a little skeptical regarding power and deep snow capabilities, but after a full season of use,I can say this,it has all the power needed for virtually any snow storm, incredible torque, nothing seems to faze it.I had a two stage prior to this and I like this so much better,so light and flickable compared to the heavy two stage machine! I can do my driveway in half the time because of the lighter weight and the ability to spin it around one handed! Really like it and look forward to big Wisconsin snow storms now! November 22, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent Machine and Easy to Use I had a Craftsman 26 inch two stage snowblower and it worked great. It was just too big to keep in the garage and I always had to think ahead as to whether I would have to move it from the shed prior to the snow coming or not bothering with it. I gave it to a guy who really had big jobs and then I bought an Ariens on the advice of my cousin who uses their professional equipment. I also appreciate that it is US made. I just followed the instructions, put in the oil and gas, and it easily started right up. I have the electric starter and did not need it. My first use was this past weekend with the monster snow in the Washington DC area where I live. I was concerned that the depth of the snow would be a problem for a single stage machine and it was not. Going back and forth and overlapping the passes made pretty quick work of a 50 foot sidewalk and a two and a half car length double driveway on a slight incline. Unlike the earlier machine I had, the discharge chute is plastic not metal and the snow did not stick and clog like with the metal chute. This machine is light and so compact and my neighbors were so surprised at how this machine chewed through the snow and threw it. The only problem developed when the remote chute director froze the chute to the left. Once the ice melted, it was fine. Just note that this was after a couple of hours of continuous usage because I also cleared my neighbor's driveway. This machine runs smoothly and is not any louder than any other machine, snow or lawn. Absolutely recommend this machine without reservations. January 25, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Assembles easily, started quickly with the electric starter and did a fine job in the first snowfall. I purchased this after reading reviews and watching videos about different snow blowers. I'm happy to see that it is made in Wisconsin. Although the shipping box was not damaged, the orange plastic engine shroud was cracked by the fuel/oil door. I took some photos and sent them to Ariens, and in a short amount of time received an email that a replacement part was on its way. I hope it arrives soon. The four stroke engine is powerful and the electric start worked great. Frankly I hate snow so the less I use the snow blower the happier I will be. I hope we never get another winter like last year here in northern NJ. December 17, 2014
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Remote chute My main issue is with the remote chute rotation. I intentionally purchased this so I wouldn't have to do the manual rotating. I used it 2X last year and had to bring it in to fix the cable because the chute wouldn't rotate all the way to each side. This year I used it once and need to bring it in. I have a very old Ariens that was my dad's and it still works well (knock on wood) but is bigger and heavier so I bought this one to use when I had surgery. Not the same quality as the old ones. I now have to lift it into my car again and bring to a dealer to be fixed. Problem is, do I have to do this every time I use the blower? Very big issue. Wish I wouldn't have gotten it with this remote handle control. Really would like to have it put to manual rotation or just get my money back. January 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A Must Have! I needed a small blower to compliment my Platinum 24 SHO and the 208EC Path Pro was my choice. In a big storm my wife cleans up with a single stage while I hit the big stuff with the 2 stage. This 33" storm we just got gave the small but powerful Path Pro a work out. 10" of snow is no problem for this little monster, it throws the snow plenty far and starts easily. January 27, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very pleased with my first snow blower I've managed to make it through 67 Midwestern winters without a snow blower but last winter, with all the snow in Northern Illinois, I'd had enough. I purchased my Ariens this past fall and even though we only had 4 major snows this year, I was happy not to shovel anymore. This electric-start machine fires up easily, has great power, clears the driveway and walk very well, and saves me from injury to my back. Now, when the snow plow clogs up the entrance to my driveway - after I've already cleared the drive - I just smile. I couldn't be happier with my Ariens and would recommend it to anyone in the market for a snow blower. March 11, 2015
