Answer:
The blade brake feature allows for the engine to keep running but stops the blade spinning if you let go of the handle. It's a great feature and I have used it for years. Very reliable. A great feature when you go to empty your bag so you don't have to re-pull start the motor. The blade stops spinning immediately when activated. I wouldn't have a mower without this feature.

You release the toggle switch and the mower will continue to run with blades spinning. If you release the safety hand rail at anytime, the blade brake will engage and the blades will stop spinning. A reset, repeating the same steps above is needed to restart the blades. Read Less

Does the bagging feature *actually* work?

I have owned a couple mowers in recent years with rear baggers, generally I've noticed that they plug up when less than half full, does this mower have enough power to throw the clippings to the bag of the bag and hope that it doesn't plug early in the mowing session?

I worry about purchasing this mower based on the limited reviews below and ones that are not positive.

Just got this. Replaced 36volt black and decker. night and day difference. Grass was 6inches, more than damp. Clogged once when I accidentally overfilled bag, with wet grass, that was my fault ... Customer Reviews

Rated 4.0 out of 5 by 7 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent Mower! Received this mower a couple of weeks ago and after getting some fuel in it and running it for a few minutes, the mower has been giving my yard an excellent cut and looks great. Excellent quality and great features. June 7, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Soild feeling machine While the unit itself has a quality look and feel, there are some minor complaints. The first time used in my front yard while driving the mower over a slightly raised tree root caused the height adjustment to change. Not a significant flaw but one to be aware of. While cutting the same front lawn the third time the rubber tread became dislodged from the rear right side wheel. I was able to slide it back in place without much effort. Overall I am pleased with my purchase. Less plastic would make it a really great value. October 8, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very good purchase Mower works great. is easy to start and the one handle blade adjustment is a very good feature. Ariens makes a very good reliable mower!! June 2, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by All the features in one mower I shopped every brand of mowers at every store. I wanted specific features that my old discontinued Craftsman mower had. This mower is better than my old one and has all the features I wanted in one mower. The bag fits tightly to the back of the mower, so no grass is blowing in your face. Does a great job collecting the clippings. The bag has a wire frame and retains it's shape when emptying. The bag mounting points are designed NOT to collect dirt and grass clippings so the bags stays in place and won't fall off. The mower started on the very first pull right out of the box. The motor size is smaller in CC's than other brands but it pulls itself easily, has plenty of power and you can operate it with one hand. With the brake blade feature, the blade stops but the mower engine keeps running when you go to empty your bag. I love the brake blade feature. Rear wheel drive is far superior to other mowers that have front wheel drive. One lever with a knob adjusts all 4 wheels into a deeply slotted locking mechanism. No flimsy spring steel wheel adjusters. The handle bar height is easily adjustable from the operating position, no nuts and bolts to deal with. A nice feature. I am very pleased the features and over all quality. My mower is new so I cannot speak to longevity, but I expect to have it around for many years to come. The only feature this mower is missing is ball bearing wheels and larger rear wheels. April 10, 2015
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Not Durable Would not start after 1st use. Called Ariens and they said blade cable needed to be adjusted. I returned the unit to HD. The overall quality of the mower did not appear to be robust. I did not have confidence it would hold up over the years. Ships by truck line and requires an appointment for delivery. July 18, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very satisfied with mower. Mower is surprisingly easy to start and quiet. The controls are easy to manipulate making the mower easy to maneuver. The handle position options make storage very convenient. Variable speed is easy to control and provides a very solid performance. May 6, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Don't Bother, A good name cheapened What a shame, I've owned 2 hand-me-down Ariens 911 series mowers that were 20yrs old (each ) before they died so when it came time to buy new, I knew the brand I was buying. I did my homework and research and got only the things I needed ( Rear wheel drive, Blade stop, Mulching, etc). I placed the order not ever seeing the mower and waited for it to arrive... On arrival everything was in order but the first thing I noticed was the lack of metal. Lots of plastic where metal should be, but I gave the engineers the benefit of the doubt. I read the manuals front to back, assembled ( about 10 mins tops) and prepared for start. Started right away, all the safety featured functioned and the mower ran like a charm and did a great job. The ergonomics of the hand controls are not well thought out and the drive mechanism for the wheels can only be used with the right hand. Cleaned off the mower ( as it still had the new feel to it and wanted to keep it clean) and put it away. Two days later, I was doing some yard work that exposed some lawn that couldn't be reached with a mower previously so I brought out the new shiny tool. Pulled the cord once... nothing, pulled again...nothing. As there is no prime there is nothing to do but pull the cord and hope. After 10 mins it was time to break out the manual's trouble shooting section. 1 out of gas? Nope. 2 Spark plug? Brand new but I pulled it, checked the gap and signs of too rich a fuel mixture. (also emptied the tank and fuel cell/carb just to do due diligence. 3. Handle safety mechanism adjustment. Adjusted then hoped for the best......Pull....nothing I then contacted Ariens via live chat and explained problem looking for tech solution or non-obvious solutions. All suggestions offered were out of the manual with the added statement of ... If these proposed solutions do not solve the issue, bring to authorized Ariens dealer (unit is less than 1 week old, run for 30mins (once) and $460), not worth my time. I read the previous review that had the same problem and chalked it up to user inexperience. I should have listened, hopefully this will get the point across, RUN AWAY and DON'T LOOK BACK at this mower. September 3, 2014
