How do these "fold" down out of the way when they are not needed? Do you have to loosen/remove the mounting bolts, or is there some kind of hinge?

Answer:
Just loosen each bolt slightly and rotate the cutter 180 degrees. Then tighten the bolts back up. Too much effort means you're doing something wrong or have them installed incorrectly.

Answer:
most blowers are between 20" to 26" high - if the drift is higher than your machine, the drift cutters slice the drift so it falls into machine - on Ariens they bolt to the left and right sides of the "business" end of the blower.

Answer:
They are used to cut snow and pull it down in front of the machine that is taller than the intake of the blower housing. There are pre cut square holes on the Ariens machines that the bolts that come with the drift cutters install into.

Everyone has seen how the snow plows drive down the street and pile up large banks of snow across your driveway, or if you have been away for a week and the snow is a week or two old, it gets hard and crunchy from thawing and then re-freezing. Normally you would have to use a snow shovel to break it up and then run the snow blower over it. With the rakes, you simply plung in and turn the machine to the side and it helps knock down the snow right in front of your snow blower. The two steel bars come in a box already pre-punched and painted to match the Airen machine. In the box is four short carrage bolts that match the bars, and on each side of the intake housing of the snow blower up high are pre-punched and painted holes that match. Simply lign up the holes and screw on the bolts, very simple. Read Less

Answer:
Hi there and thank you for your question.
Drift cutters are bolted to the side of the snowblower (end plates) sticking up @ 45 degrees. They are designed to cut thru the large drifts ,creating a path and preventing the snow from "avalanching" on to the thrower.
Hope this helps.

Answer:
The distance between the center of the slot and the hole is 3.5 inches, The slotted section is approximately 2.5 inches long meaning if you wanted to bolt the bars on solid and not have them adjustable you could have a distance anywhere from about 2.5 to 4.5 inches. If that doe not work you may also be able to drill holes in the auger housing to accommodate the cutters.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by You don't know what you're missing until... If you've never used drift cutters, you probably have been working too hard when your banks build up and you finally decide to move them. Quality manufacturers accessory. Photos on website are of the basic model not the deluxe. October 21, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by works as designes You don't need them all the time, but that one time you do it sure is nice. Now if home depot would sell the rest of the accessories for these blowers, ie, front blade weight, hand warmers, track conversion , I'd be even happier February 25, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by OK PRODUCT Installation was only somewhat difficult because the Bolt on hardware was hard to bolt on. I had to use WD-40 and Water Pump Pliers to get it to thread on. After you've done it a couple of times adding lubricant it gets easier. December 8, 2015
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by ok seems like a good product,.however they are nowhere near the size stated in the description that says 25"L x 5".W they are actually 191/2 L x 2"W. double checked the numbers to make sure they were the ones in the description that I ordered and they were ,but the size described is incorrect. they will work on my "smaller snowblower" but I wanted them for my large 32" bucket blower. not sure how they will perform on that. really was looking to have the extra 4 1/2 inches in length and the extra 3" in width as described. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good drift cutters What's there to say, they're drift cutters. They work as expected, and can be folded back out of the way when not needed. Quality and finish is good, except for the nyloc knobs included in place of nuts. In theory, this makes this a tool free installation, but in practice the knobs don't provide good enough leverage to overcome the friction in the nyloc insert, so tightening them properly is a chore. The design of the knob makes using a tool to gain more leverage difficult. Ultimately I did manage to get them sufficiently tight, but I'll likely replace the silly knobs with some standard nyloc nuts at some point this summer. March 3, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great addition to my snow removal arsenal These are a great add-on. Like others have mentioned, I found the knobs hard to turn and the bolts hard to keep in place while installing. I added a rubber washer to each bolt that serves two purposes - it holds the bolt in place and it makes it so you don't need to tighten the knobs as far to snug the bar up to the housing. I also think they'll help protect the painted finish when you rotate the bars in and out of the storage position. (the washers came from toilet tank bolts, which just happen to be the same diameter as these bolts) February 18, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great inexpensive add on I got these shortly after ordering my snow blower. I figured that even though I live in Boston and we don't get nearly as much snow as other parts of New England, it would be worth having them in the long run and getting them while my snow blower is in production would be easier than years later. I used them in my second season with this machine. Heavy high snow piled on the sidewalk meant that extending the cutters helped pull snow down in front of the machine. These are really easy to use. If you're doing it right, you are only loosening he bolts enough to swing the cutter into position. If it seems like too much effort, you're doing it wrong. These are well made and inexpensive. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by DRIFT CUTTERS Easy to install and worked perfectly - as we had quite the snowfall this year in Boston - actually broke the record yesterday! Go Red Soxs March 16, 2015
