Answer:
I wouldn't buy an Ariens product, even with a heavy discount. Try to look for a different branded product, I have generally had great experiences with Huskvarna products (sorry i think i spelt it wrong).

Does the discharge chute flip up or do you have to use screws to change it's position? When up will it fit through a 54" gate?

Answer:
The discharge chute does not flip on this model. It is a rubber discharge chute that will flex when it comes in contact with an object. If you want to remove the discharge chute you would need to use a wrench to remove the two bolts. I would recommend removing the discharge chute to go through the gate.

Answer:
Because the mower is a zero turn mower it does not deactivate the blades when the levers are pulled backwards. The clutch will stay engaged until the PTO button is turned off.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.0 out of 5 by 10 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Worst mower I have bought When you buy a product and your product has no issues that fine, however when I bought my mower I had trouble with it for a full 1 year before I sold it for peanuts just to get rid of the machine. For me the electric clutch kept breaking the stay, and this in return made the wires all rip that connected the clutch to the power source. To make things worse Ariens would not do anything about it to fix it, every-time I contacted someone they just said it was my fault (someone who has owned ride-ons my whole life and know how to use them properly). I simply cannot recommend this product as it is by far the worst mower I have owned. February 19, 2015
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Gave it more than enough time and also the dealers Ariens was my choice because of its close to home manufacturing and reputation. I have owned the 48 xl for five years now and it has been in the shop more often AND has had back ordered parts when they are needed most (spring). Not comfortable to ride. I mow just under 5 acres so maybe not he best choice in size but ...It starts with the fuel tubes chronically falling out, tragic design for keeping the mower deck level, and poor lever balance for steering. The only good thing about it is the kohler engine. Looking for my next mower (larger) right now - looking past ariens and its cousin Gravley. dealer network in my part of the state (watertown, WI) lacks. May 9, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Zoom XL 48" with 232 hours Couldn't be happier with this model. It would only make sense to include lights on the mower rather than having to add the optional kit. May 6, 2015
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Overall an average ZTR I like this unit generally. That being said I had only 5 hours on the machine when I happened to notice that the clip that holds the right rear leveler in place was gone. I had no pin of that design available and resorted to a small hitch pin. I do not understand how something as vital as a keeper pin can just fall off. My wife found the washer out in the hard. Thankfully I do not thing that I hurt the machine. My other concern is the cutting height. The lowest setting is too low and causes scalping, but the second lowest setting is too high. Any idea of a fix for that? June 15, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Cut my mowing time in half! I've had my Zoom 48" XL for almost 2 full summers now and I'm very impressed with how well it performs. I've cut my mowing time in half and my grass has never looked so good! The Zoom XL is very comfortable to ride, feels like sitting in a lazy boy while cutting the grass. This rig has plenty of power for towing an aerator without even noticing it's behind you. I have more than a few neighbors watch me as I cut amazed at how fast I can maneuver it around my yard. Made in the USA! What more can you ask for! September 10, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Customer Service Top Notch to go along with the Zero Turn! I cannot tell you how great the customer service is at Ariens. I have called numerous times with various maintenance questions, how to install the accessories that i purchased, etc. It is such a shocker to still see this type of Customer Service! Now to the Mower: I just love this thing. I have 1 acre of yard and this mower really makes it look great! It runs great and i don't have any problems with it's performance. Zero Turn really cuts the mower time down - almost half the time. June 14, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great mower for the price! Have had this mower for several months now. This mower has cut my mow time in half. The bagger unit is a must in Oregon with all the wet weather. Mowing on wet hills is not a good idea. Can't say enough good about this mower overall. April 22, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by good value for the price Haven't had much opportunity to use my new Zoom XL48 because its been so dry here in Texas. I was able to get a 2011 model because I wanted the Kawasaki engine. Plenty of power, smooth handling, well built machine. Have a small engine repair shop & my only gripe with Ariens is that parts are somewhat pricey. But this is my first zero turn mower & I chose Ariens. June 12, 2012
