Should I add gypsum?

My garden has clay soil bellow 4 inch ground level. On the top 4 inch I put top soil. Should I add gypsum to the soil? If I add, should I put it bellow, or top layer is fine? I live in east bay, california.
Asked by: Gardengirl
Not sure where you live. We are in central Arizona and our soil is compacted with granite and we needed to aerate before we fertilized. This was old stock, had gotten wet. Very hard to work with.

Can I apply this with a drop spreader onto a lawn? Would doing so help a clay-soil lawn over time without need to work it into the soil? (Aeration is a separate thing which I will be doing, I just don't want to have to take a tiller to the lawn.)
Asked by: TrippKnightly
I tried it but it didn't do much. You've really got to work it into the clay in order to get any real results.

Does gypsum change the soils Ph and what might be any disadvantages of using it?
Asked by: KEITH
This gypsum will lower the ph of the soil as it contains 15% sulfur...it will only lower it temporary, if at all if you have "free lime" or calcium carbonate in your soil.

We bought 35 bags of this gypsum to work into the soil (with fertilizer) on our pasture. I was full of large clumps and balls. Very hard to work with and after 2 weeks of sprinkling and rain still remains on top of soil. Bags must have been sitting for a long time, gotten wet. We will have to stomp or run over to work into soil. Cannot put our livestock or chickens on our pasture until we work it into soil better. Would not buy this from HD again.

The first bag I bought was dry, but the second while not clumping was a bit moist. Its location in the Irvington store is not under cover. The other soil amendments need to see a little moisture so they don't dry out completely, but not the minerals.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for soil, but has many small stones in it. Gypsum is the magic ingredient for clay soil. It improves drainage, tilth, soil structure. This is a raw ore product, brownish with many small stones (2-3 cm) in it. It would be fine for garden use or preparing soil for a lawn, but if you use it on an established lawn, you have to rake the pebbles out afterwards. The price is great though. Another big hardware store in town has pure powder gypsum, 50# at about twice the price. It's absolutely indispensable for soil preparation here with our high clay soil. Without it plants just sit. They can't push their roots thru the soil.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Product I purchased this on the advice of someone and could not be more satisfied with the results I achieved. My soil is an extremely hard clay. I planted eight palm trees and used a jack hammer to get through the soil. The first two holes took two hours to dig. I mentioned it to someone and they told me about this product. I used it at about three times the recommended ratio and the results are phenomenal. It seems like the hard soil is now a top soil. It broke up that nasty clay unbelievably. I am loving this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome in a bag! So easy to apply. Just make sure you have disposable gloves and it's not windy outside. Our front and back yard were a mound of rocks and hard soil. The Ph was too low for grass to grow so I had to apply Gypsum to the clod and pray for a miracle. Like magic the gypsum made dirt appear. I turned the soil once-twice a day for four days working the gypsum further and further into the mound. Even without the effort I could see the soil breaking down. Day five I applied the lime to the soil with ease. I plan on using this product again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product The earth is compacted clay in my yard. I use this product to loosen the clay and allow water to drain. Once you add the gypsum and water, the earth becomes porous and allows plants to drain. It is an amazing product. I use this every time I plant something. I bought a new home with no landscaping in the rear yard. I add this to the soil and overnight it breaks up the soil, so your plants can thrive.
