Product Overview

The space-saving design of the Karina model makes it the ideal staircase to use in replacement of the traditional pull-down attic stairs when converting an attic into a loft, office, or bedroom. It is available in 3 colors - black, white, and grey - powder-coat finish - ready to install. The standard Karina staircase kit is adjustable in height from a range of 6 ft. 10 1/4 in. to 9 ft. 3 in. and with two additional risers (right footed), can be extended to a maximum height of 10 ft. 9 1/2 in. The Karina comes with a handrail for one side. A second-side handrail is available as an optional accessory if needed. The Karina stair treads are manufactured from European beech wood, finished with a light natural stain and clear coat protective sealer. An alternating tread design (right-step/left-step) allows for installation in very limited spaces. This kit can be installed in 4 different configurations. To complete your project, a balcony rail kit is available. Riser bars are available in a set of 20 to close off the back of the treads. Each Karina staircase kit is shipped complete with detailed assembly instructions and a DVD to assist in your installation.

Answer:
For 96" to 110" units, the space available of 3' x 3' would not be enough to allow for the installation.

Answer:
It would depend on the total height of the planned installation when measured from the finished-floor on the first level to the finished-floor on the upper level. For most installations ranging from 96" to 110" the space available noted at 3' x 3' would not be enough to allow for the installation of the KARINA space-savings series. I have a height of 7 feet and a diameter of 4 feet to fit a staircase in. Would this be able to work for me given those confines?

Answer:
It depends on the actual run and width dimensions available. The Karina can be installed in as little as a 25" width and could possibly be installed in a 48" running length. Please contact our Customer Sales & Support Team via our toll free telephone number at (888) 782-4758 and we can assist further based on you exact installation.

Answer:
The Karina staircase is an alternating tread staircase kit. You will need to check with your local code compliance office to determine if they will allow an alternating tread staircase for your specific application as the codes vary depending on the municipality.

Can an S-curve be made?

In my installation I would like to construct the stairs with a slight S-curve. Instead of the stairs going up along the side of the wall all the way to the top the top entry is offset 17" to the left of the bottom. So the bottom stair will be perpendicular to the wall and the stair will ascend making a slight curve to the left and then back to the right offsetting 17" so the top stair will be parallel to the loft entry. Is this possible? I called Arke in the US and they thought not but I don't think anyone who considered my question ever constructed one. My contention is that if the stair can make a left turn OR a right turn why then can't it make a left AND right turn? To those of you who have constructed one do you think it is possible? If possible I don't think a 17" offset would cause much of a offset load issue.

Jake....thanks for your inquiry. You present a very good question that I discussed with our design team in Italy in hopes to have a definitive answer for you. I have actually assembled and installed the Karina staircase kit so I have some hands on experience and knowledge of the assembly required. My concern is with the left AND right turn noted would be the connection of the handrail on the one side as the span between the treads would be greater than the length of the connection allowed with the handrail. Our design team in Italy concurs with me that it can be assembled as you note with a left AND right turn however the handrail installation would not be possible for the entire running length of the staircase. Please contact our offices via our toll free telephone number at (888) 782-4758 and request to speak with the Managing Director and I can discuss this at more length with you. Read Less

Rated 4.8 out of 5 by 5 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by I love this staircase! In our cottage, in a small living room, we needed a staircase to a little loft - space was limited! This staircase was the perfect solution. We purchased and installed it about a year and a half ago, so it's possible that the documentation and instructions are better now, but the weren't that easy at the time. There are now youtube videos that help with installation of the stairs and balcony railing. The staircase itself is solid, well-built, and attractive. We joked, and nicknamed it "stairasaurus" because the "vertebrae" that make up the curved support so reminded us of a dinosaur's skeleton. The thick hardwood treads look great, and we love the contrast with the white, powder-coated metal. The parts which attach railings et cetera are grey plastic but they are sturdy and well made. For anyone who worries that an "alternate tread" staircase is difficult to use - it's not difficult at all! I've always loved the gracefulness of a circular or spiral staircase, but they are not easy to walk on, due to the "pie shaped" steps. In contrast, the alternate treads require only that you start up or down on the correct foot, and then it's great! [Note: Somewhere in the internet there's a video by another stair manufacturer that shows a person walking up and down an alternate tread staircase, to illustrate that it does not pose a problem]. We are delighted with this staircase. It allowed us to have an interesting and attractive stair without the usual waste of space. It takes up half (or a third) the space of a traditional staircase. Additionally, its open and airy look is very attractive and "spacious" in our small space. At almost $1500 it's not cheap, but it is definitely worth the price. November 20, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Wonderful stairway for tight spaces This stairwell was very easy to install, instructions were quite thorough. It was quite easy to fit it into the space we have. All high quality materials, and comes in different metal finishes to match decor. Home Depot shipping was prompt and all items came in great shape. It does take a little time to get used to the alternating tread stair since I've never used one before. Definitely don't use the stairs in socks, but I guess that would go for all wood steps :) March 25, 2011
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Quality stairs for close quarters Bought these as a permanent stairway for our remodeled loft space. They are high quality, look great, and relatively easy to install...I say "relatively" and not "absolutely" because you do have to understand the rise over run concept for stairs, and adding a turn as we did does complicate it a bit. Overall we're very pleased with the end result. They're perfect for tight spaces and have a pleasing, high end look when complete. September 25, 2012
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great DIY staircase solution for tight spaces This is a great solution if you have a tight space that you need to put a staircase in. It's not trivial to calculate the space it's going to take if you have a curve in your design. You need another person to help you install this. The spine is quite heavy and it takes two people to put it in place and adjust all the different pieces. Give yourself 2 days to install this. The end product looks good and is of good quality. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Product! I am buying my second one! I have 2 small loft spaces and very tight entries to each. These stairs are absolutely great ! A little awkward to get used to the Left foot first on the ascent and a bit of a perceptual challenge ....BUT I placed a sticky back plastic no skid circle in the middle of each step so when traversing, each step is easily discriminated! Gotta love those italians for making such a great product! October 19, 2012
