Is this really 2 1/8" thick?

I am interested in installing this in my kitchen. However at that thickness I would have a 2" step up from living room to kitchen. Also,,can't imagine having to cut through 2" inches while fitting it around things. I must not be understanding that right.

Answer:
It is neither 55mm or .55mm. The former would be 2" thick, the latter would be 1/46th of an inch or about 5-6 sheets of paper. Do either of those seem accurate? No, both are extremes. In reality the flooring is roughly 1/8th inch thick or 3.2mm as is true for the majority of vinyl flooring.

Armstrong rep wrote this is 2 1/8 inches thick. That is CRAZY. No flooring vinyl is that thick. It must be point 55 mm or written another way .55 mm.
It's probably more like 1/8 of an inch thick.

I would never install any new flooring on top of existing flooring that has impressions in it. If it is a very hard, smooth surface, without indented patterns, gouges, cuts, etc., then possibly, but if there are any pattern indentions, cuts, seams, etc., in the floor beneath, in time your new floor will pick up some of these indentions and/or imperfections. Not as much as the original floor, of course, but you will see some of the effects when light shines across your new floor, which is generally often. It doesn't look good. This happened to me once, yet the square tiles I laid on top of a seemingly smooth floor, picked up every flaw, and the tiles I put down were expensive and thicker than this vinyl is. Read Less

It has a texture on it but I'm not sure. I would say no but if it were wet possibly. I would say any flooring has the potential for somebody to slip on it if the conditions are right. But I installed it and it was verry grippy to my shoes. Hope this helps.

Customer Reviews

Rated 5.0 out of 5 by 5 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great for the price First off I love the grain they put into the surface of this sheet vinyl. Almost makes it look real. Almost. I used another brand of wood look sheet vinyl in another room and this Armstrong looks so much more real, or not like cheap sheet vinyl anyways. Only downside is the thickness. Now it is 80 mils thick so its ok padding but you will need to make sure not a single piece of dirt gets underneath it because you will feel it. Also don't kink/crease it during installation because the damage will be permanent on surface. I recommend getting help moving it into place and getting it cut down to size. In my experience 120 mil thick sheet vinyl is the better choice. It won't get damaged if you bend it a lot during installation, and it covers up more imperfections in floor. Now my only complaint was the thickness. It is sold at 87 cents a sq. ft. So I cannot complain. Only other downside is that the surface does get scuffed up a bit. But all sheet vinyl does this. If its a high traffic area go with a light color. Scuffs don't show hardly at all on light colored flooring. So for what the product is and what it costs, Can't beat it. I was going to give 4 stars because of scuffing and thickness but then I remembered it only costs 87 cents. Great product! One more thing. Make sure you get the sheet vinyl put on a cardboard roll at store. Make sure it is at least 5-6'' and thick enough it wont bent. Otherwise the flooring might bend and get damaged during transportation. I have experience in this obviously. Got flooring put on too small of a tube once and had to spend an hour rigging it with support in my truck for the drive home. Best of luck. March 27, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by An alternate purpose First off, I would not recommend to anyone to use this in the manner I have, not because it didn't come out great (it did), but because officially, I don't think it was designed for this type of use and Likely the manufacturer would say something along the lines of "Designed for Interior use". Now to tell you what "I" did with mine... I had to replace the old flooring due to wood rot in my boat and the original floor covering is no longer available, so I decided to use this design to give my boat the wooden floor-ish look. now straight off the roll, this won't last long in a marine environment as far as i can tell, but, after a coat of polyurethane with clear no skid additive, this floor will be a $1.50 per sq foot solution to a normally $8.00+ per sq foot solution. it will also be going into the cabin's floor and dinette area. AND... We are going to redo the kitchen floor with it too. Don't be fooled by the fact that this is a bit thinner than some of the other vinyl sheeting available, this stuff is a good value for the money, easy to use and looks great! September 6, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great alternative to an expensive flooring. Suprisingly easy to install and looks fabulous from any angle April 8, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Fit the bill My daughter and I decided it was time to redo her room a couple of months ago. She has her jack russell in there with her a lot so a tough floor was a must. She picked out this style, we went to pick up and installed no problem. The rich red tone looks great in there especially with her cooler paint. The pattern is nice and so far the wear is fabulous. I was a little worried at the thinness but it's stood up to rearranging furniture, the dogs and daily life no problem. May 4, 2015
