Customer Reviews

2 Fireplace and Stove Vacuum Cleaning System is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 24.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from this compact vacuum really sucks I was unsure when I saw this vacuum. It's the size of a 3 gallon metal pail in rough black texture. The 3 ft hose is metal reinforced thick plastic with a metal wand. Wow, when I turned it on the 6.2 amp motor went into high rpm suck mode. I vacuumed three rooms of corners and behind shelves at my office where sand and dead critters lay for along time. It sucks up gravel and rocks the size of golf balls and clunks into the metal can like an old slot machine win. This unit works fine on a stove and is easy to tote around by its bucket like bale handle. The automotive type heavy duty paper filter came with a cloth cover bag to help filter fine particles and help element last longer. Cute but "Bad Ash" name may offend a few whimps.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Little Unit! Decided to try this over using my garage vacuum. VAST improvement. Small compact unit, easy to handle, which really sucks up all the ashes, plus there is no 'dust' overflow in room thanks to the dual filter (paper cartridge and cloth bag). Not terribly loud either, which is a real plus in the house. Not great at sucking up small 'chunks' of unburned wood, but it IS for ASHES, & does a great job of pulling them in. Fireplace & grill wasn't clean enough to eat off of by any means; but it is totally ash free, & that was the objective. My wife can even use this unit; it is that light. Was missing a clamp or hook for the hose; I added one myself to the side (cost me a whole $.75; use a rubber washer inside and outside under the bolt & to stop air loss to hose). Highly recommend!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really is a useful tool! This is a powerful vacuum with some amazing options such as a non staining metal crevasse tool and a metal reinforced hose. The filter keeps the ash from getting into the air, inside your home or outside on the patio. All are positive features needed to vacuum your fireplace or outdoor fire pit or kiva. When it comes to your fire pit you’ll need a long extension cord in some cases. Mine is nowhere near an outlet (poor forethought on my part and extremely hard to sweep out). This product even comes with an attached ‘THUMPER’ feature to shake the ash to the bottom before you empty it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from REALLY Cleans those BAD ASHES from fireplace This is a great little machine. It will really clean your fireplace quickly and makes the job easy. It is a bit noisy while running, but it does a great job. It is lightweight, so easy to carry up and down stairs (we have fireplace in the basement family room as well as the living room), just a bit heavier with the ashes inside it. The filter keeps the outlet air clean and no dust comes into the room while you are using this. One caution, remember to take it outside - not just into the garage - when emptying it. The only 'down side' of it is, now that we got it my wife loves to burn the fireplace more often, then she expects me to clean it immediately the next morning. She wants it kept 'sidewalk clean' all the time.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not only for cleaning ash. This is a nice little product for cleaning up the workshop or garage area. The hose is a bit short, and since it does not have wheels it is a bit awkward to bend and vacuum with one hand and carry the vac in the other. It could use a bit more suction, but it does get the job done. Anything from kitty litter to sawdust, anything that needs vacuuming but you don't want to use your regular vacuum.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from works well so far. By now I used it 19 times, and I found following: vacuum cleaner comes with filter protective bag, both together does excellent job for my EPA fireplace with very high combustion, thus very fine ashes-nothing comes out. The hose has round opening end and could be few inches longer, but it's OK for my small combustion box. I wish the hose has also extension with the narrow end, because this one does not clean well ashes from spaces between refractory bricks. It cleans great ashes from fireplace door sealant. When cleaning fireplace first I remove ashes out with the shovel, then finish cleaning with vacuum cleaner. When I turned vacuum cleaner for very first time it had nice and quiet run, but after picking some ashes it switched to laud high pitch sound, which does not go away. Since it is used just for short time it does not matter that much. During vacuuming time I use few time the red button - to shake off ashes, hopefully it works. The suction is very good. It would be nice, if machine had some hose holder when stored. With all my remarks, I am enjoying using it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from best for fine dust and ash only... I tested the BAD ASH 2 vacuum by cleaning out the interior of my wood stove, the wood stove flue clean out, oil boiler flue clean out, and fireplace clean out. OVERALL: I think the vacuum works very well to clean out light weight dust and ash. Best use in my opinion is to clean out a pellet stove, wood stove, or even drywall dust. The filter works remarkably well considering the amount of fine dust and ash that enters the vacuum. The vacuum is not too loud and is easy to move around. Suction is adequate when the hose is not clogged. CONS: The vacuum struggles when sucking up larger debris as they constantly plug the hose. FIXES: A small screened attachment for the end of the hose would be a great addition to this product as it would keep the larger debris out of the hose. I used a small piece of hardware cloth / small gauge chicken fence as a makeshift intake reducer and it worked well. REVIEW: The vacuum performed exceptionally well when cleaning the interior of the wood stove. The stove contents was comprised of dry, light ash as all of the wood had burned away cleanly. I used a small shovel to clear the majority of the contents from the flue clean out and then proceeded to vacuum. The vacuum worked well when cleaning out pure ash from the fire place flue clean out but would frequently clog if a 3/4'' square (or larger) piece of charcoal/wood remnant was ingested into the vacuum hose. While the chunks of charred debris were small enough to fit through the hose, several pieces would lodge in the hose and become packed with ash. The vacuum then lost all airflow and was no longer removing debris. I used a dowel to clear the hose several times each of the flue clean outs. The filter works extremely well with regard to catching dust and ash. No ash dust or debris were visible exiting the vacuum via the exhaust. Ash does eventually build up on the exterior of the filter causing reduced airflow. A humid environment causes the ash to stick to the filter much more frequently. The built in spring loaded knob that is used to dislodge ash from the filter does work well with pure ash but not as well when black soot has built up on the filter. VIDEO: Video shows the vacuum clogging after less than 30 seconds of cleaning out a chimney flue.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Bad Ash 2 Fireplace & Stove Vacuum Cleaning System Having spent the bucks on an expensive vacuum for cleaning carpets, and not wanting to ruin it by sucking up dirty fireplace ash, debris and unburned pieces of timber, I would typically resort to cleaning my wood-burning fireplace, on my hands and knees, with a dustpan and brush, carefully transferring cold ash from the fireplace to a nearby trash bin. While this method works, the process is time consuming and sends a lot of the ash and soot airborne. If not careful to place debris in the trash, the falling ash can create a big mess to clean. For all the above reasons, I had been contemplating the purchase of a hearth vacuum for a long time, and finally got one. The largest difference between the Bad Ash (love the name) Vacuum and a standard vacuum cleaner is that the Bad Ash is constructed mostly out of metal, including the hose, except for the top made of ABS plastic and the replaceable filter, which is a paper-like material. This vac came with an optional pre-filter that slips over the paper filter and tightens with a locking push-button elasticized nylon cord. The motor is powerful, but the on/off button is smallish and is black like the cover, so you have to look for it. The canister is large enough to hold several days worth of ash, so it doesn’t requiring emptying after each use. The hose is metalized with a length of about 3 feet, so you need to have the vacuum relatively close to the area being cleaned. The hose locks into place with a twist to avoid accidental unwanted hose detachment. Instructions are included, but not necessary as assembly and use is very straight forward. I only referred to the instructions when trying to determine the purpose of the red knob attached to a spring on top of the vacuum, which the instructions state is to cause a vibration to loosen debris in case the vac starts to lose suction. I used the vac to clean a large amount of ash that I allowed to accumulate in my hearth for purposes of writing this review, and did experience some loss of suction about 2/3 of the way, but not enough to warrant stopping and emptying the vac. I gave the red knob a few pulls and noticed a slight improvement in suction. I like the size of this vac – about the size of a 5-gallon bucket - and I found myself carrying it all over house downstairs picking up dust and debris in vents, cracks and crevices. The 8-inch hose nozzle is aluminum, which can scratch or gouge delicate surfaces. Again, this vac is designed for the interior brick of a fireplace. There are no wheels on the bottom of the canister and again, the hose is short, so you need to hold the vac or keep it very close to the area being cleaned. I’ll add rubber feet or felt pads to the bottom of my vac so as to avoid scratching the hardwood floor if I happen to drag the canister during use. There are other fireplace vacs with a similar price point that offer features the Bad Ash 2 doesn’t, such as wheels and a variety of nozzle attachments for different surfaces. Still, if you are looking for a straight-forward, no frills, simple to use hearth vac for less than a Benjamin, the Bad Ash 2 is worth considering.
