Customer Questions & Answers

I am wanting to change the color of my kitchen cabinets, will this work?

My kitchen cabinets are a maple stain with a satin look finish. I want to change the color to a cream or off-white. Is this product the best to use? Do I need to use a liquid deglosser/sander as well as Kilz Adhesion Primer?? What is the best way to accomplish a professional result?
Asked by: mfincher
Hi mfincher, Yes, our Alkyd paint is a great choice for kitchen cabinets. The best way to prepare your cabinets before painting is to de-gloss the surface. You can use a liquid deglosser/sander product or regular sand paper (we recommend using a 360-600 grit). Once the surface has been deglossed and cleaned, we recommend applying a primer like our Premium Plus Stain-Blocking Primer & Sealer. You can view this primer here: http://www.homedepot.com/s/behr%252075%2520primer?NCNI-5. Then you can apply 2 coats of the Alkyd Semi-Gloss Enamel for a professional finish. Happy painting! - Sara

If painting over laminate cabinets, do I have to use a primer first?

Asked by: Marciaf
Hi Marciaf, Thanks for writing in, and great question! Since laminate is typically a slick surface, it's important to prime before using any Behr paint on this type of surface. I recommend using Kilz Adhesion primer from our sister company Kilz; this primer is specifically made to prime hard to paint surfaces. Hope this helps, and good luck on your project! Am I able use this in a Wagner HVLP Control spray gun? Do I need to thin it and if so with what?

Asked by: David
Hi David, Thanks for checking in! You can spray this product using any airless sprayer with a .013"-.017" inch tip size. I don't recommend thinning however, as doing so can compromise the integrity of the product. Best of luck with your project!

1-gal. #AE-1 Rushmore Stone Semi-Gloss Enamel Alkyd Interior/Exterior Paint is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 19.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from worst paint ever I have been using Behr paint for over 30 years now and love it. That is until I bought this alkyd paint. This paint was a nightmare.I messed with it for about 6 weeks painting a few pieces of wood. and the paint would not dry. After 4 weeks it was still tacky. I even used a fan for several days on it to help dry.My family called it the paint from ? . Bought a second can and had the same issue. The humidity level was also low. I wasted about 5 hours on a can of this paint including prepping and using Behr oil based paint which turned out great. This paint should be pulled off the shelves. This paint created a finish on my old wood/veneer combo cabinet that looked like it had come from the factory. The first coat seemed streaky, but after the second coat, I was completely satisfied! The paint is smooth and easily adheres to a clean surface. The color is excellent--true to the picture and modern. I would definitely recommend not judging this paint by the first coat. The second coat completely changed the look of it, and I ended up only needing those two coats to get the finish I hoped to get.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Alkyd is Amazing! As a professional painting contractor, I have used many paints over the years, from just about all the suppliers. I started using the Alkyd for interior trim and doors about a year ago and fell in love with it! What a great finish at an affordable price. Wish it was here 10 years ago! thanks Behr! Rated 5 out of 5 by from experience with 3900 Tried many different brands of latex enamel trim paint, all same--brush marks and surface that easily came up. Tried Behr Alkyd enamel--Oh Boy!---goes down easy, has just enough sag where majority of brush marks disappear as the paint dries and dried surface is hard and durable. Takes a little bit longer to dry than latex, but results are worth the wait. Clean up is the same (with water). I'm using white 3900, which is more of a light cream-Would like to know if Behr makes same in more of a traditional bright white. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Goes on smooth, dries reasonably fast., more durable and almost no scent. My favorite aspect of it, cleans 10x easier than latex off painting tools. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from best ever for wood trim The woodwork in my house was stained. I wanted to paint but was having difficulty getting acheiving that smooth glossy look of oil paint until this product was recommended to me. Its amazing! It self levels and dries very hard giving my woodwork the look of oil. Best paint ever! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
