I applied cedar naturaltone and do not like the results at all. It has a strange light orange color, not natural at all. Can I apply a darker stain?

I have used this stain twice on my deck. The second time was by mistake. You are right...it resembles old, rusty water and dries to the same color. I would recommend living with the stain for 2 or three years then cleaning and restaining with a better product. The extra $10-15 per gallon will be amazing. I wish I could remember the name of the stain I used originally. It was great. Looked like real Read More

Answer:
Dear Snickelfritz,
In order to apply a darker semi-transparent color you must first remove/strip the Cedar Naturaltone color from the surface. However, if you don't want to remove the stain and the surface is cleaned and in sound condition, you can apply one of our solid color stains. Please follow all label instructions.

Unfortunately, you've already applied at least one coat of stain. So the next coat will certainly show the earlier color.
In addition, the new coating may not last very long because the surface is already sealed and the new coat may not be able to absord.
The manufacturer says, "Two coats are recommended."
My suggestion would be to strip or sand the deck and start again. You'll improve both the color and the life of your deck. Read Less

Use another brand. I found this easy to apply and looked good until winter set in. It flaked off on horizontal surfaces. After googling reviews of this product, I found this to be a common problem.

Hello alex,
We appreciate your question. This product is both a waterproofer and a stain for the wood it covers. The semi-transparent finish will allow some of the color of the wood and the wood grains to show through. Well wishes for your project!

The weatherproofing version is slightly darker and looks much nicer. The waterproofing version is much lighter and looks faded as soon as it is applied. Trust me on this one. I stained my fence with the weatherproofing version originally, and had some left over for when it came time to restain. All I had left was enough to do about 4 8' sections of fence. So, I went to home depot to buy some more and all they had was the waterproofing version. I took it home, and applie it to an 8' section right next to one of the 8' sections just stained with the left over weatherproofing version. You could tell the differnce from a mile away. Read Less

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Fence Redue Used the product on an old fence I was refurbishing. I took the old wooden fence boards off and power washed them. After they dried. I used the wood stain. Turned out great. Sure beats the cost of buying new fence boards. The fence was about 15 years and fairly weathered. Using water and soap for the cleanup was helpful. Saved on brushes. June 28, 2016

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by ONLY NEEDED A QUART Unfortunately the color I needed wasn't availabale in a quart and a pint was too little. I only used a small amount and now I'm left with a lot of stain I probably won't use. It's a good product though and did a good job February 11, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great on cedar boards for outdoor use product was just the right color for cedar gate and planter, protects from weather July 1, 2014
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Not the same color as before. I hadn't planned on fully redoing my railing around my deck, but since this color didn't match the previous coating that I did the deck, I will now need to redo the railing. Not happy! October 21, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy Just love this stuff, easy to use and looks good!! July 18, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product for outdoor cedar fence I was recommended to use this top end product by a friend and have to say I am more than pleased with the results. I used it on my front yard over year ago and it looks like new. The fence gets full San Diego sun all day and has not faded or peeled. The only touch-up required is to spots my cats use to to dig their claws into the fence to jump over. A little touch-up and it blend it right in. I am now doing my back yard and the color match is perfect. This time I used a Graco spray gun for my first coat which saved a lot of time. I still needed to brush in some spots where the grain was tight. Second coat always goes on real fast and that is when the true color pops out at you. The cleanup with soap and water makes all the difference in the world for me. Real easy and fast. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] June 22, 2016
