Customer Questions & Answers

can you get this in different colors or have color added?

Asked by: Anonymous
There are many colors available and Home Depot stocks the Behr white base then mixes to whatever color you select using a precise color component measuring system. But be sure to look at the color over wood samples in the store before you purchase. The printed colors don't represent well and never select a color by looking at a computer monitor as the color changes with viewing angle.

Can you apply this product over a painted area? I have a shed that is painted. Can I apply it over the existing paint?

Asked by: Anonymous
This is a water based coating. If your shed was previously coated with an oil based coating you could have bonding issues. I recommend sanding a small area and trying the coating over it first. I don't recommend simply coating over an old coating with no surface preparation.

Our deck is probably 30 years old. It's treated lumber that is VERY dry but the deck is in good shape.. Would this product adhere?

Asked by: NOrthernMIGirl
Hello NOrthernMIGirl, Thanks for your question. Yes, as long as the surface is first cleaned with a product like our No. 63 Wood Cleaner, then you can expect great results with our wood stain. Well wishes for your project!

Can you use a pump sprayer with this stain, or will it clog it? If not, what tools do you recommend for a large deck?

Asked by: FloridaDeck
Hello FloridaDeck, Thanks for your question. That's right--we wouldn't recommend the use of a pump sprayer but only an airless sprayer, 3/8" nap roller, pad applicator, or a high quality nylon/polyester paint brush. Best wishes for your deck staining!

1 gal. Deck Plus White Tint Base Solid Color Waterproofing Wood Stain is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 61.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!! Definitely not worth the money. My husband spent several weekends sanding to remove old stain from our 20' x 20' deck. The, we followed to the letter the recommended products and processes to re-stain the deck to have a finish that would supposedly last us 10 years. It didn't survive one Alberta winter. The stain has lifted in several places and looks absolutely terrible. Don't waste your money like we did.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent coverage, spreadability, color I have used this previously (Weatherproofing Stain - acrylic base 5013) with great results. Recently I used it on previously oil-finished deck uprights that had faded away after 7 years. I pressure washed and let it dry a lengthy period, then wiped down before application. The product spread very easily, adhered quickly and well. We are in the PNW and the UV is only harsh a few months a year, but the water is incessant all other times, and mildew is always a problem. This works great in that challenging environment. This is cheaper in the long run than lower priced options. Win-win. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not for areas with direct sunlight/weather After two years of using this product I will certainly not be going for the Solid Color Waterproofing Wood Stain. It has been applied to a large deck that gets direct sunlight all day and has no protection from the weather (rain, snow, etc.). Every summer the deck needs to be restained because of the peeling and flaking. It comes off the deck like latex paint and hardly makes it through the summer season. It comes off with a little as a sweeping broom going over it. The area to cover is very large and with the large need of having to scrape off all the flaking paint, aka the entire deck (which is 50'+), I am turning to renting a sandblaster and starting from scratch.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Behr Waterproofing Wood Stain I love this product, it is easy to apply and the color is beautiful. The clean up was so easy with soap and water. We added a new deck and used saddle composite deck boards. Our old deck was constucted with gray composite which I have never liked. I bought the Behr Saddle colored Waterproofing Wood Stain to cover the gray boards and the color is as perfect a match to the new saddle colored boards as possible. We saved a lot of money by painting and not replacing the old gray boards. I can't stop going to the door to look at the newly painted deck, it is so beautiful. I wish I had painted it years ago.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great way to rejuvenate an old deck!!! Our old deck looks amazing now that we've applied a dark brown solid stain on the floor, and a soft white to the railings. This product makes me proud of my deck! I even told two customers who were browsing deck stain about my experience. Thank you for this great product!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from works on vinyl decking . I have a 6 year old 100% vinyl deck that the sun was not kind to . I purchased Behr Solid Color wood Stain and color matched it to a board that was an extra with no sun fade . I power washed the deck and rolled the stain on then brushed it out . Now after 3 months of use , it DID NOT scratch off from the deck chairs being pushed in and out and no discoloration from the sun and water from a hot tub . One gallon covered a 15 x 31 foot deck with railing .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Work smarter not harder. The first time I used Waterproofing Wood Stain was last fall when I started the reconditioning of 1000 sq. foot deck that was over 25 years old and had not been maintained. I was amazed as I began to stain the pickets using a small household sponge instead of a brush. The sponge made it easy to get into tight places and coat all sides. Wherever I swabbed the wood soaked it in immediately! I worked over the areas that were 25 foot off the ground by reaching over and around the pickets. I got most of it done in one day! Now the weather is warming and we have replaced damaged boards and pressure washed the deck. The 2nd batch of Padre Brown was not a perfect match to the pickets so I elected to use it on the bannisters and chose Boot Hill Grey for the deck. I used a roller with extension handle this time. At first it did not seem to be covering well enough but I realized that the 2nd coat to touch up the missed spots and spaces between boards gave it a cohesive matt finish. Thankfully I was working in the shade. I used 2 carpet samples to sit on while hand brushing the 2nd coat, rotating them as I worked backwards and protecting my knees. I have a long way to go on this deck but am very pleased with the ease of application. I did not try to clean my worn out brushes but the stain came off my hands and nails with normal washing. Will have to wait and see how the stain holds up but my deck is 100% improved. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
