Answer:
Hello James,
We appreciate your question. Yes, if the paint will be applied to asphalt shingles, a primer like our No. 436 Multi-Surface Primer & Sealer would be needed. Please be sure to follow all label instructions of both products for best results. Well wishes for your project!

Hello vikingval,
Thanks for your question. Although this paint is made just for roofs, we would recommend against applying it or any Behr product to rubber surfaces. I can suggest checking with Home Depot for another brand's coating that may be suited to your project needs. Well wishes!

Do you have to put the roof paint over the primer or can the prime do the job alone ?

Answer:
Hi Greg,
Thanks for writing in, and great question! If the surface is bare metal, asphalt or wood, it should be primed with something like our No. 436 Multi-Surface Primer & Sealer. Otherwise, just make sure the previous paint is in clean, dry and good condition before coating with the Multi-Surface Roof Paint. Hope this helps, and good luck on your project! Best, Jeanette P.

Rated 3.8 out of 5 by 13 reviewers.
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Roof Paint The material it is made of is very durable thick and strong Gallon is set to cover 400sq ft but barely covers about 100ft. Make sure to consider this while planning to do your project I had to leave it unfinished till more paint m in by mail since you can't buy it at stores August 2, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good Product but coverage isn't as described I like the product, however, according to the coverage listed one gallon should have done it. I needed 3 gallons to make it look right. Count on 3 times the amount that you think you will need. I read other reviews and some of them mentioned this, so I wasn't shocked.....just disappointed. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great Concept, but you need a LOT of Paint. I've read reviews where a 5 gallon bucket can cover 1,800 sq. feet on an asphalt shingle roof. I have an asphalt shingle roof, but it's architectural (dimensional) style. For the same size roof, it took me 12 gallons of primer (at $100 per 5 gallons) and will take me probably 15 gallons of paint (not done yet). My wife and I are very happy to have found a paint for asphalt shingles, we simply didn't expect the cost to be so high to complete the project. I imagine there is much better coverage for a traditional asphalt shingle roof. I used a 1 1/4" nap rollers (lots). April 19, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great product, but plan on two coats This stuff covered the ugly brown asphalt shingle roof i have, and looks pretty good for the most part! Buyer beware, it goes on very very thick and you will need 2-3 times the quantity you think you need. I bought 2 gallons for a tiny garage roof based on the estimates on the description, but ran out about 1/3 the way into the job. Just bought 4 more gallons and now planning to do a second coat in some areas due to poor coverage. get the thickest nap roller you can find. You may also need to use a brush to get the hard to reach spots between shingles... or just put it on very thick and hope it fills the gaps. April 18, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Roofing paint All in all I'm happy with this product except for the coverage listed. It only covers about 1/4 of the listed square footage at least on asphalt shingles. May 24, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great Idea- But Need LOTS of Paint My roof is only 2 1/2 years old but my wife and I wanted to change the color so it matched the siding and shutters. I was happy to find a product like this that I could use on asphalt shingles, and very happy to read about the coverage. Unfortunately, the coverage estimates are no where near accurate for architectural shingles. Rather than one 5 gallon bucket of primer and one 5 gallon bucket of paint for my 1,800 sq foot roof, I had to use 12 gallons of primer and about the same for the paint- I'm waiting for my third order of paint to arrive to finish the project. The cost of the project is triple what I budgeted. I'm using a 1 1/4" nap roller. I'd have to use even more paint if I wanted to cover every shingle overlap entirely. I assume the architectural shingle requires more paint than a traditional style shingle. I wish I knew this before starting the project. My wife and I are thrilled with the look of the roof (we used matte black). April 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Awesome Product! Saved Thousands! This product exceeded my expectations. I bought a home with a roof in a great shape but I wanted to paint the exterior and the roof color was brown and did not coordinate well. We painted the roof with the charcoal color and it looks amazing! The product has excellent coverage, it took about 5 gallons to cover the roof of a 1920 SF home. The product is pretty thick and imagine it seals up any potential leaks that may be forming as well. I will definitely use again if needed! Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by we are glad we used the multi-surface roof paint We used the multi-surface roof paint to spruce up the look of the roof. It looks great and we have had several inquiries as to what we did to make the roof look so good. We would recommend this product. September 4, 2014
