I find if you mix in a smell (lemon, anise) from wife's spice cabinet they associate the unpleasant experience with the smell and then you can spritz things with the smell and they will not chew. Bitter Apple is another product that is sold at pet stores that works well. The SDS on this product shows toxicity of 1 which if memory serves me is equal to table salt. Again, watch the pet, and take actions should things happen. But a great paint and trust me it holds up well. In Kansas we get sandblasted with the wind and this stuff is almost like a rubber coating. I use a brush and put on 2 coats. Over kill probably as one coat is very thick with a good quality brush. Absolutely. I used this paint for my chicken coop and it worked very well. After all, it is designed for barns. If your dog is in the habit of acting more like a beaver and chewing on the house you may not want to use it until you read about the toxicity.

Answer:
Yes, you should only need to prime over latex when making a big color change. It will save you a coat or two to get to the new color. The other case would be when you have bad chipping and raw wood exposed. I've painted old barns with it and it did fine over latex.

Dear Stan,
Thank you for your question regarding Behr Exterior Barn and Fence Paint. If the surface is in good condition, you can apply directly over it when clean and dry. If the latex or oil-based finish has started to crack, peel, or flake, use a product such as Behr Premium No. 64 Wood Stain & Finish Stripper on wood to remove the coating. Be sure to rinse thoroughly when done. Follow with a product such as Behr Premium No. 63 All-In-One Wood Cleaner. Scrub, rinse, and allow to dry completely when done. Any bare or exposed Redwood, Cedar, Cypress and other “bleeding” woods contain water soluble extractives which may cause discoloration of white and pastel colors; therefore prime the above type woods with one coat of a product such as BEHR PREMIUM PLUS® NO. 436 Exterior Multi-Surface Primer & Sealer to reduce these stains. Once the surface is properly prepared, clean and dry, it is ready for Behr Exterior Barn and Fence Paint.

Probably work fine if you prime the metal first to get a good surface. I've done so on old farm gates. The trick was getting the metal really clean and priming.

Hi Renee. I'd probably not use this on iron gates because it's formulated more for wood or brick. If you're looking to paint iron, look for a product specifically for metal (often called "enamel") and use a good primer made for metal, too. Good luck on your project!

You could tint it yourself, by buying some "colorant," the same thing they use in the store to tint it. It's not hard to find online, and getting the tint right is a lot easier with black than with other colors. If it's not black enough you just put more in until it is. Read Less

I think they should be able to do that for you in the paint mixing area once the ordered cans come in. That shouldn't be a difficult thing for them at all.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Happy Home for my chickens I build custom chicken coops and also raise chickens myself. I stumbled on this paint and thought I would try it. I have to say its great. I brush all my paint on as I think it gives better protection than a roller and I hate spraying as the thin coat protects nothing. This stuff goes on thick, covers even weathered and stained wood. I use reclaimed materials and this covers all sins of previous colors. I do put on two coats, but I think its probably overkill. I just want happy chickens and customers. If your using particle board siding I recommend painting the underside edges and about an inch of the last board so rain/weather cant get to the glue that holds it together. This stuff works well. I find that from can to can the color stays consistent so fear not about color variations. February 21, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Way easier to work with than oil We had painted the barn with red oil paint from Menards before which lasted for years but was difficult to work with. Because of the ease and good ratings on here we decided to give this Behr red barn paint a try. I had my doubts about using latex but this paint was so easy to work with and gave great looking results. After one winter I do see some areas of shrinkage where the caulk is now exposed so I am picking up another gallon to touch up. I admit that I want to keep it looking perfect. The buildings are so picturesque that we enjoy looking out the windows at them now and feel we have a scenic view. The five gallon buckets are a deal and there may be a rebate right now. May 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Purchased on line. Good value. I picked up the paint at the store and realized it was to bright for my taste, so I took it to the paint department and ROCKETT. worked her magic on it and when she was done it was a perfect reddish brown. ROCKETT is a definite asset to Home Depot.!!!!! May 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by My barn looks like new When I moved into my current residence, the prior owner had built a fairly large barn from a kit. The kit included siding that was pre-primed and trim that was not. Over the intervning 15 years, the trim got pretty moldy and ugly. The primer was gray and the overall look was one of neglect. After a power wash and two coats of the white barn paint on the trim and just one on the pre-primed and clean siding, the barn looks like new. March 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good product The paint went on well when applied. The quality of the paint was good, as was the color. I hope it will last a long time. I have bought this product before (last year) and may purchase it again, as needed. It would have been easier if I could have had it delivered to the store, but evidently it is again North Carolina shipping laws to ship paint to the store. But it arrived safely when it was delivered to my house. The paint is easy to apply and easy to clean-up. I would recommend this paint for anyone who needs to paint a barn. April 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Product I have uses this paint all over my ranch, it covers well, sticks well on wood or metal (Barn metal is what I used it on) Made my barn look new. Great all around paint for the price. April 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by I love this paint The Behr Barn and Fence paint is great. I buy the red and the pink and mix them and it comes out as a beautiful pink. Also, I love that the paint is non toxic. The paint covers well and washes off easily. April 26, 2016
