I have used the Behr semi transparent and solid color stains on my deck. How do I avoid overlaps?

I typically use a pad to apply and cannot seem to avoid the overlap area that is twice as dark as the rest of the deck. I have a 25 foot deck and as I run out of stain on the pad applicator and have to redip the pad, that individual board I am staining now has to be continued and as I do that I get a 3 or 4 inch overlap (darker area). Any ideas as to how to eliminate that?

Answer:
Hi Al,
Thank you for your question! You can avoid overlaps by maintaining a wet edge, avoiding painting or staining in hot temperatures and direct sunlight. We also recommend doing one board at a time.

I am looking for a sealer for my fence. I like the natural look, and am wondering if this is a natural looking stain of if it is a heavy color like redwood. What can you tell me?

Answer:
Hello Ken,
Great question. Yes, our Solid Color can be used on pressure-treated wood. However, if it’s brand new pressure-treated wood, then we recommend letting cure for a minimum of 6-8 weeks before using our stain.
Best wishes,
Kevin

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.6 out of 5 by 51 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent coverage, spreadability, color I have used this previously (Weatherproofing Stain - acrylic base 5013) with great results. Recently I used it on previously oil-finished deck uprights that had faded away after 7 years. I pressure washed and let it dry a lengthy period, then wiped down before application. The product spread very easily, adhered quickly and well. We are in the PNW and the UV is only harsh a few months a year, but the water is incessant all other times, and mildew is always a problem. This works great in that challenging environment. This is cheaper in the long run than lower priced options. Win-win. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] August 16, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best Deck Stain We Have Ever Used We have tried several different brands. Two summers ago, we stained all our decks with another brand. The stain did not stick to any of the horizontal surfaces. Consequently, they all had to be redone. A great deal of time and money wasted. We re-stained with Behr and the stain held up even through our harsh Michigan winter. I would not purchase any other brand from now on. My daughter bought a house last fall and purchased a different brand of paint for her interior and I was helping her paint. I was so frustrated I wanted to go to Home Depot and purchase Behr paint myself to replace what she had. It was runny and the coverage was terrible. It took more paint because it needed multiple coats and still the finish did not look good. You definitely get what you pay for. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] June 22, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent stain Covers in one application and matches exactly to the sample in the booklet. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] June 22, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best Product Ever With an 8 foot back fence and a 4 foot front fence - Behr has with stood the test of time for over 25 years. The fence itself still looks amazing it is just the interior boards that are attached to the fence that begins to show the wear. My experience the Behr has lasted about 13 years and then it is time to do it again, but it is easy to apply with a roller and looks beautiful when finished. I just started painting the front fence and all my neighbors love the color and how it looks. I will never use any other for outside or inside. Behr is for me. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Outstanding results staining our cedar house I have been staining our cedar sided house with this Behr product and I could not be happier with the results! Excellent one coat coverage and our house looks 20 years newer! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] February 9, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good for staining an outbuilding The Behr solid color waterproofing wood stain we used on our wooden storage building looks good. The stain seemed a little thin as we applied it, and it took two (or sometimes three) coats to cover the previous finish. Time will tell if it holds up for five or more years... Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by great coverage this stain offers great coverage. It's brought new life to our very faded deck [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] September 24, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Converage and Long Lasting This is the second time staining my house with this stain. The first time was 15 years ago and it held up great. This time, I am switching colors and the coverage is great. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] September 17, 2015
