Can I apply this stain on a painted deck?

I have used the Behr semi transparent and solid color stains on my deck. How do I avoid overlaps?

I typically use a pad to apply and cannot seem to avoid the overlap area that is twice as dark as the rest of the deck. I have a 25 foot deck and as I run out of stain on the pad applicator and have to redip the pad, that individual board I am staining now has to be continued and as I do that I get a 3 or 4 inch overlap (darker area). Any ideas as to how to eliminate that?
Asked by: Al
Hi Al, Thank you for your question! You can avoid overlaps by maintaining a wet edge, avoiding painting or staining in hot temperatures and direct sunlight. We also recommend doing one board at a time.

1-gal. #SC-105 Padre Brown Solid Color Waterproofing Wood Stain is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 81.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible Product I put this down on my deck last year summer and by the time the next summer rolled around we had peeling areas all over the deck. We prepped by power washing and sanding. We let the deck dry out for 5 days and then put the stain down. Looked great for the first part of the summer then when we went to use it the next summer it was in terrible condition. I would highly recommend using a different product. I would like a complete refund for the 4 gallons I purchased!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Looks good after 10 years, but faded We decided to stain the whole house after redoing an addition. The old can of Behr stain left over from the previous staining was dated 2006. Other then some fading, the house still looks great - no cracks, chips, or peeling. A similar product at Lowe's was the exact same price - but the can contained several ounces less product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Stain to feel good about After pressure washing the exterior walls and allowing to dry, went about applying stain to 2 sides of the house by brush. Application was relatively easy, although some of the cedar clapboard siding had deteriorated significantly due to lack of maintenance. These areas required some extra brushing in order to achieve coverage. Drying time was fairly fast, enough so that when some rain came about 4 hours after finishing, the stain did not wash off or leak and went on to dry thoroughly. Had done the other 2 sides of the house 6 months ago. Whole house looks great, although the intention is to apply a second coat next year. Quality is supposed to be very good, but time will tell. Very pleased with price/quality (if holds up) based on Consumer Reports ratings. Really good deal when purchased during Home Depot paint rebate sale times.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product (but) Purchased multi gal's to stain a replaced section of fence. Good product , needed 15 gal to do the fence the first time, liked it , so ordered again. I still believe that it's a good product with one problem when I reordered the two single gals. it was a different color. Same brand , same color, same level. Not even close! Purchased the 15 in the store and the 2 on line. Maybe that was the problem?? I would buy again, from one place.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Exact color I was looking for Color was beautiful, good coverage, long drying time. Requires 2 coats. Absolutely no gloss to the finish, so dust and dirt settle and stay. It would be perfect if it set to a harder finish. Doesn't wear well on stair edges, or anything that takes abuse of any kind. Perfect for upright material that doesn't take abuse of any type.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent coverage, spreadability, color I have used this previously (Weatherproofing Stain - acrylic base 5013) with great results. Recently I used it on previously oil-finished deck uprights that had faded away after 7 years. I pressure washed and let it dry a lengthy period, then wiped down before application. The product spread very easily, adhered quickly and well. We are in the PNW and the UV is only harsh a few months a year, but the water is incessant all other times, and mildew is always a problem. This works great in that challenging environment. This is cheaper in the long run than lower priced options. Win-win. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not for areas with direct sunlight/weather After two years of using this product I will certainly not be going for the Solid Color Waterproofing Wood Stain. It has been applied to a large deck that gets direct sunlight all day and has no protection from the weather (rain, snow, etc.). Every summer the deck needs to be restained because of the peeling and flaking. It comes off the deck like latex paint and hardly makes it through the summer season. It comes off with a little as a sweeping broom going over it. The area to cover is very large and with the large need of having to scrape off all the flaking paint, aka the entire deck (which is 50'+), I am turning to renting a sandblaster and starting from scratch.
