I wish to use behr 436 primer on asphalt shingles ,--- can this be tinted medium to dark gray? If not what other primer can I use that's ok for use on shingles. Would using behr multi surface roof paint without first using 436 be such a big deal? Why doesn't behr have a deep base 436 primer?
Asked by: Doug
I would prefer the paint to be mid gray

Can this product be used on a new flat EPDM roof?

Just had flat EPDM rubber flat roof installed. It is Black! Would like to paint it white or silver to reflect the sun.

Dear Dan, Thanks for your interest in our Behr Multi-Surface Roof Paint. Our Multi-Surface Roof Paint is designed for use on new or old unglazed tile, masonry shingle, anchored gravel, aluminum/metal materials, composite sheet, asphalt shingles, concrete or cement block, urethane foam, slate or wood shake roofs. Our Multi-Surface Roof Paint has not been tested for compatibility with rubber type surfaces such as EPDM. You are welcome to test a small inconspicuous area to explore product compatibility. Based on articles and websites specific to EPDM, there are specific types of latex paints that can be applied directly to EPDM. However they caution to contact the EPDM manufacturer prior to application to ensure compatibility and warranty terms.

what do you recommend for coating my asphalt roof in areas of ponding water?

I have a flat asphalt shingle roof - it is not leaking but has four areas with ponding water about 3-4 SF wide
Asked by: Anonymous
This paint is only meant to reflect the sun it will not help stop now or future leaks more than any regular paint would hold back water for a very short time.

Can this be applied with airless sprayer

Asked by: Nyx
Hi Nyx, Thanks for writing in with your question. Yes, you can use an airless sprayer with a .015"-.017" tip size to apply this paint. Do not thin. Have a great day! Regards, Giovanna

1-gal. White Reflective Flat Multi-Surface Roof Paint is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 30.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Product! Saved Thousands! This product exceeded my expectations. I bought a home with a roof in a great shape but I wanted to paint the exterior and the roof color was brown and did not coordinate well. We painted the roof with the charcoal color and it looks amazing! The product has excellent coverage, it took about 5 gallons to cover the roof of a 1920 SF home. The product is pretty thick and imagine it seals up any potential leaks that may be forming as well. I will definitely use again if needed! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

My only negative comment regarding the product is Behr should make the 5 gallon bucket more accessible. The product itself is excellent but don't be fooled by the rest of the comments/review that say you don't need a primer or one coat does the job because it's not true. You will need either a primer or secondary coat regardless.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointed - poor coverage I called Bear before buying this product. Their experts didn't know any basic technical questions. Home Depot staff in Naples were equally void of product knowledge. The label says it covers1500-1700 Sq ft for rough surface. My shingle roof 3200 Sq ft and I'm 15 gallons in and 1/3 of the project complete. I budgeted 300-400 dollars but will have spent over $1000 before the project is complete and that's for 1 coat! My shingles are in good condition 8 yrs old but still they are bleeding through the paint, staining it a tea color, so I will have to apply a top coat (another $1000). So this $400 dollar project will cost me 5 times my budget. You can't leave a roof half painted. You get about 300 Sq ft coverage not 1500-1700. This means multiple trips and hauling lots of 5 gallon pails, job broken into multiple days and changing clothes to run back and over to home depot for more paint. The only good thing is that tested the morning that I applied the first coat and the white part of my roof was cool to the touch while the unpainted shingle was warm, so I'm guessing that the white reflective qualities will cut my electricity bill. But I will have to wait years to make up the cost of the product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Idea- But Need LOTS of Paint My roof is only 2 1/2 years old but my wife and I wanted to change the color so it matched the siding and shutters. I was happy to find a product like this that I could use on asphalt shingles, and very happy to read about the coverage. Unfortunately, the coverage estimates are no where near accurate for architectural shingles. Rather than one 5 gallon bucket of primer and one 5 gallon bucket of paint for my 1,800 sq foot roof, I had to use 12 gallons of primer and about the same for the paint- I'm waiting for my third order of paint to arrive to finish the project. The cost of the project is triple what I budgeted. I'm using a 1 1/4" nap roller. I'd have to use even more paint if I wanted to cover every shingle overlap entirely. I assume the architectural shingle requires more paint than a traditional style shingle. I wish I knew this before starting the project. My wife and I are thrilled with the look of the roof (we used matte black).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Went on smoothly, great coverage. Used on a rusty galvanized steel roof from the 1940 that had numerous imperfections, rust, nails etc. I rolled one half of the roof and sprayed the other half with my Wagner Sprayer. Instruction recommend the use a primer coat but these roofs had plenty of bite left in the previous coats of paint and rust, even after i thoroughly pressure washed them. I put one good coat of paint on using both methods, coverage was excellent. Cleanup with water was easy. Had a thunderstorm 2 hours after painting, paint held and a month later and numerous rain storms since, the roof looks great. We will see how it holds up after a few winters.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Do not use a roller Says it will cover 250 to 450 sq ft. I only got 94 sq ft per gallon using a roller. Got about 300 sq ft using a sprayer and it's going to take at least 2 coats probably 3. It took me almost 2 hours to roll one gallon of paint. Very hard to do to get good coverage. Even using a sprayer it's going to take at least twice as much paint as it says.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good - with dark asphalt shingles, count on a second coat Excellent at reflecting sunlight and keeping roof surface cool. If applied properly, it makes a huge difference on surface temperature of shingles. We applied it with a sprayer, and with dark shingles, it needed a second coat. On metal surfaces (gutters, valleys, etc.) one coat was enough. Overall, very satisfied with this product.
