Dear Kiowaklipper,
If you have a previously painted deck and it is in sound condition with no peeling or flaking, then assuming that it was an exterior paint for horizontal surfaces, you should be able to re-paint it.

Answer:
Hi kiowaklipper,
The product you referenced is transparent stain. This cannot be used over an already painted surface.
You may use an opaque stain, however why not use paint instead of stain. Stain will not change the look of the wood as it has already been painted.

Answer:
You cannot put stain directly over paint. Stain needs to be able to penetrate in to the wood, and the paint will prevent that from happening. In order to stain at this point, you would have to strip the paint off down to the bare wood. Otherwise, painting is your only option.

Yes, but you must spray it on heavy and brush it into wood grain and crevices for the maximum protection and beauty. It will soak in and dry before you can brush it in leaving an uneven surface color. I would not recommend this application for best results. It is okay to look good temporarily if you fog on several coats, but the finish will not last as long as it should because it did not cover evenly. Read More

It is okay to look good temporarily if you fog on several coats, but the finish will not last as long as it should because it did not cover evenly. If you take the time to brush it on keeping a wet edge while working it into the woodgrain and crevices and doing an additional coat the same way you will be pleased in the long run and the product will perform as specified. Is it recommended to mix containers together to get a consistent color

This question is from 5-gal. Cedar Naturaltone Waterproofing Wood Finish

I have a 4 year old 5-gal (unopened) container of Behr Weatherproofing Wood Finish, #401 cedartone. It has been stored in my basement, Where the temp remains 65°-68° year-round. My cedar deck is several years old, about 1100sqft. and never had any finish applied to it. I am thinking it will take more than the 5-gal I have. How should I prepare the container I have before use and would you recommend mixing it with an additional 5-gal of the same product to achieve a consistent color? Any other tips would be appreciated

Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question. We do recommend intermixing multiple containers of BEHR® Transparent Waterproofing Wood Finish to ensure color uniformity. However, before doing so, we highly suggest checking the product to see if it is still usable. Many factors may influence the quality of the product over time. Best of luck on your project.

Answer:
Hi Steve. A second thin coat with a brush or pad applicator will help even out the finish. However, since this is a transparent wood finish, the more prominent roller marks may still show through.

Rated 3.7 out of 5 by 11 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Buildning a Cabin using a lot of Home Depot products I'm in the process of building a cabin near RIchland Chambers Lake on 5 acres. Although the attached picture shows a work in progress, The cedar and beadboard have all been finished in the Cedar NaturalTone waterproofing wood finish. Although I used 15 gallons for the entire cabin, it only took one coat to acheive the finish I wanted. A plus is I purchased all of the appliances (Refrigerator, stove, sink, dishwasher and Pergo Flooring from Home Depot... very, very pleased. Also I ordered and installed bathroom fixtures (toilets, sinks), room fans and carpeting from Home Depot as well. Again, very pleased with the products, assistance in selecting the products and overall help from Home Depot. Sorry for the messy kitchen picture but as I said, it's a work in progress. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product Used on fence, deck, and tree house shake, fence ,deck. This worked great. I did not prep wood at all. I just brushed into the wood two coats and it soaked in well. I did the same thing again for the next two years in the summer and it darkened a little but has a bulletproof finish that has surprised me on the deck and steps of my front porch. September 6, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good but coverage is overstated The stain is pretty good stuff. Take your time, prepare your surface, follow the instructions. I used it on a 6-7 year old fence that had never been treated. I cleaned and pressure washed and allowed to dry. I used a decent garden sprayer and back rolled with a 3/8 nap roller. Granted my fence is old and dry but I'm only covering 150-175 SF/gallon as opposed to the 300 sf/gallon stated on the product info. Pleased with the results, but 2000 SF of fence is going to take a lot of stain. June 5, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Much better than expected We have used Behr Transparent Waterproofing Wood Finish on an 12' x 24' open west-facing deck on our cabin in New Hampshire. The weather conditions are brutal with snow, ice and below-freezing temperatures in the winter, and full hot sun in the summer. We have only needed to treat the deck every three to four years, and it continues to look great. Thanks for making a good product. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] October 10, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great product We bought this to stain our daughters' playhouse swingset. We used the leftover on my raised garden. Both look fantastic and like new. The next morning after a light sprinkle, the water was beaded over the boards and not soaking in. Fantastic product, never have had an issue with Behr Paints. They will always be my number 1 choice. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great quality and value--for years I have used this on our fence for years--ever since we put the fence in. It is consistent, goes on easily, and lasts. My wife really likes the resulting look. July 9, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by horrible I bought five gallon of the transparent waterproofing wood finish stain. It is not even a year old and it looks terrible. It is off part of the decks, I did 3 decks is the reason I purchased so much, That was a mistake. It is not worth the extra money thinking it is better anything would have been better than this April 13, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Do not buy this product We had a new redwood deck built last spring 2013. We applied Behr Premium Wood Coatings All-in-One Wood Cleaner in accordance with directions on the container. Then, in accordance with directions on the can, we applied BEHR Premium Weatherproofing Wood Finish. We carefully and precisely followed all directions and time frames on these products and we were pleased with the results. We are in California and have been in a drought since the deck was built. Now, it has rained for a few days and the deck looks terrible! It has black streaks and little black dots all over it. They look like mold. We brushed a spot on the deck with a scrub brush and the stain came off - right down to the bare wood. The BEHR Premium Weatherproofing Wood Finish can said this product would last 4 years on a deck. It didn’t even last one year! These are appallingly poor and ineffective products. So, thanks to Behr, we are faced with having to remove it all, clean all it up and start over. March 2, 2014
