What kind of primer is required?

I see that this product requires a primer. Is there a recommended one to use? I plan to stain a concrete patio floor.
Asked by: NatPatBen
Hi NatPatBen, Thank you for your question. We recommend that you use BEHR PREMIUM® Concrete & Masonry Bonding Primer on your uncoated surface for added durability. This product is a high-performance water-based primer and promotes a uniform topcoat finish and creates a stronger adhesion between the coating and surface. It is easy to apply and dries clear. Hope this helps and best of luck on your project!

Damaged color concrete

we just had concrete poured and some fool contractor laid plastic over it and painted the kitchen cabinets, now we have white over spray on the concrete, what do you recommend to make the patio beautiful again? we were told a stain might be best
Asked by: ca1rob
Hi Ca1rob, Thank you for your interest in our BEHR PREMIUM® Solid Color Concrete Stain. There are actually several alternatives for topcoating your exterior concrete surface. Depending on the sheen you would like to achieve, may we suggest the following: For a satin finish - BEHR PREMIUM 1-Part concrete & Garage Floor Coating. For a low lustre finish - BEHR PREMIUM Porch & Patio Floor Paint. For a flat finish - BEHR PREMIUM Solid Color Concrete Stain. All three are excellent alternatives for coating your concrete patio. Also if you would like to remove the overspray, we would suggest a product such as BEHR PREMIUM No 992 Paint Stripper. Please follow all back label instructions to ensure proper surface preparation and application. Hope this helps and best of luck on your project!

Why is the solid stain peeling after a week? Followed all instructions given by HomeDept staff and YouTube videos.

Concrete was clean, never painted about 3 years old .
Asked by: Upst
Concrete stain will not bond well if the concrete surface is not properly prepared. Cleaning and etching the surface is essential, as pointed out in Behr’s YouTube video “Preparation for Uncoated Surfaces for Paints & Stains.” This includes using Behr Premium number 880 Concrete and Masonry Bonding Primer on problematic surfaces. (However, concrete stain will bond very well to old clean and etched surfaces without this bonding primer, which I have never used.) Although you do not describe the concrete surface you have stained, the following is my best guess at the nature of your problem. Concrete of any age is very porous. Even though it looks “solid,” it can still hold a lot of water. If your interior surface is a below-grade concrete foundation wall (i.e., with soil on the other side), water in the soil on the outside of the wall may be saturating your wall. This water then evaporates inside the house. You can check to see if this occurring by taping a large piece of aluminum foil with its shiny-side against the wall. After 6-8 hours check the foil. If you see moisture on the foil surface, then water is seeping through the wall. If you have moisture seeping through the concrete wall, no regular paint or stain will adhere to it. (Water-based DryLock paint might adhere.) To eliminate the seepage you should call a drainage contractor who might propose a number of options: adding/fixing gutters, landscaping to channel water away from the house, excavating the foundation and water proofing the outside of the foundation wall, installing French drains, etc. If you have water seeping through a concrete foundation wall, please do not “solve the problem” by covering the inside of the wall with insulation and drywall. You will eventually have mildew growing behind the drywall. I would never recommend painting or staining a garage floor if you park your car in the garage. The paint or stain will likely not hold up well under the heavy use. I hope this helps.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst Behr Purchase To Date I suggested Behr's solid color concrete stain to my contractors who were finishing our basement. They hated the stain by the time they were done with it and I was very disappointed with the finished floor. The contractors had to re-stain two spots on the floor but when they were finished, the stain was noticeably different. Now I have to find a way to hide these areas which will be hard since one is in the doorway of the bathroom. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE BEHR I have grown up using different paint products. In the end, I always stick with Behr Paint. The coverage is so even and easy to apply. The variety of finishes and colors is awesome. I purchased a new house and tried to use the "expensive top of the line" brand that the house was painted with. I ended up having to use 4 coats of paint that still didn't cover correctly. I finally went back to what I know works, Behr! One coat fixed the whole job! When I paint my friends' homes, I always have a contingency.. that I get to use Behr paint. Love the product! Worth every cent!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Third project Just finished my third project. One concrete floor on my screened in porch and two patios. I am a female pushing 70 years old so I took my time and followed the "how to" section on your web site. Keep having people ask me who I hired to do such beautiful work! The patio that I did first, pictured here, has already been pressure washed and still looks like new. Love, love, love your products.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Choose the best first We have used Behr products for every home we have had for over 40 years . Behr has every type of paint or stain you could possibly need. The color choices are endless and the durability is beyond compare. We have 18 large concrete columns around our home plus many concrete blasters and over 30 yrs we have not had to restain them for any other reason than changing the color. No one wants constant maintenance on large projects and Behr products provide lasting results. We would never consider any other brand. We are more than satisfied ,why change what works and has proven itself. We highly recommend Behr products.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Concrete Stain My back porch was plain concrete and I wanted to add very expensive mexican saltillo tile slates. A friend suggested Behr concrete stain and sealer. Home Depot made color tinting a breeze. I was very happy with how easy it was to apply and how it realistic and professional looking it was afterwards. Product began to fade 6 years later but reappling Behr product was a snap. I was very satisfied with how long the product lasted especially with our Southwest summers!! I will continue to purchase these products, use these products and recommend Behr to anyone who will listen. Thank you Behr for reliable and reasonably priced product!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Looks Worse NOW! My husband and I followed all the directions to prep, stain, and seal our enclosed front porch concrete. You see what this product is doing now - scratching off. We only walk and sweep this porch and it looks WORSE than it did before. If I could give it a "0," I would.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Behr is the best product ever!! ! After having used Behr Interior Paint in most of my rooms, I knew I couldn't go wrong by trying the concrete stain on my foundation, basement floor and porch. I applied the stain over exisiting paint in my basement then applied the Behr sealer to give it some shine. The concrete stain was also applied over a tar like substance on my foundation even though I was told it probably wouldn't work. It all looks fantastic and the foundation now matches my siding and still looks the same as the day I applied it which was a couple years ago. I won't buy any paint or stain other then Behr.
