The cedar color in this stain brings the deck close to its original color after it was first sealed with a transparent sealer. Read Less

Start with a gallon, start staining, get a feel for how far it is going and how much stain you have left in the bucket. If you need to buy more just remember to mix your stain from the first can into the new can. I am not sure if they sell the stain in quart cans or just gallons. Read Less

Hello and thank you for your question. For your project, you'd need 2 gallons BEHR PREMIUM® Semi-Transparent Weatherproofing Wood Finish. 1 gallon of this product has a coverage of 300-350 Sq.Ft. for the first coat and 600-700 Sq. Ft. for the second (second should be thinner which is why it has more coverage). Hope this helps and good luck on your project!

Hubby did the pressure tr. wood floor of my greenhouse with the finish and it looks and seems to be wearing great. See if you can get a sample or small can and try it on a not so noticeable spot. I'd add a photo of the fence but our Internet is being moody (too slow).

Answer:
Dear Dave,
BEHR Transparent Wood Finishes are recommended for properly prepared new to slightly weathered, unsealed exterior surfaces. These wood finishes allow the natural pattern of the wood to show through while adding a subtle color. BEHR Wood Stains & Finishes pass the coefficient of friction (slip resistance) test. Please follow all label instructions.

Answer:
Absolutely Dave!
Clear coats like Behr Transparent are penetrating sealers.
When used according to The Manufacturer, they absorb into the wood.
This leaves the surface traction of the wood intact.
NOTE:
Paints are surface coatings that sit on top of the wood.
It is much more likely that paint would be slippery.

Find another product. Behr has worked horribly, done it twice. Research a better product. I've tested TWP products on my deck and I've decided to go with one of those.
It's not just a question of money, but the amount of hours spent stripping and refinishing. A real headache.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good Looking #501 Cedar Naturaltone Transparent Weatherproofing Wood Finish This is what I stained my cedar wood fence with about 3 years ago. It still looks good and my son liked it so well we stained his fence with it. He took pictures and told his coworkers about it and they used it on their wood fences. I added to my fence and the old stain looks as good as the fresh stain. You can't tell them apart. I highly recommend this on a new wood fence or if you are doing an old wood fence. It is very long lasting and looks great. August 9, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Worst product I've ever wasted my time with Many years ago I painted houses and sealed decks as a professional, so I know what I'm doing. If I could turn back time to July 2015, I would buy a different product than #501. 5 years ago I stripped the deck at our new house and resealed it with a different product. Last year, it was starting to look beat up so I bought this product to redo the floor and horizontal guard pieces. The vertical guard rails and rim joists still didn't need to be redone. The old stain/weather sealer was so good I had a hard time getting it all off. I had to strip it twice, then pressure wash it. Then hand sanded the deck down to get rid of the excessively weathered wood. It looked great. Then I sealed it twice with this #501 product, the the shade, covered by a pop-up shelter, when it wasn't warmer than 80 degrees. It seemed like it went on easy with a roller. No problems. One year later, the deck floor looks terrible and the horizontal guards aren't much better. It's worn to the wood in so many places as to look embarrassing. The stain performance was far worse in one year than than after 4 years of the prior product I use. I really wish I would have made another choice and saved myself the 30 hours it took to look this terrible so fast. July 18, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best Purchase! Easy to apply and finished product looks great. Used it on another fence a few years ago and still looks great! Also, built a fort and repaired lawn chairs and chaise with wood and used this product to stain them. July 1, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Very good product. Easy to apply. One coat gave very good coverage without sanding and cleaning. This wood finish was purchased as a sealer and stain for an east/west facing side gate with weathered redwood slats. It was easy to apply, looked great, and covered well. I did not sand or clean the weathered wood as I know I should have, but the product painted and covered so good on the first slat I decided to save some time and stain. The stain has not yet been time and weather tested, but so far it has been a great product. May 11, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by I have been using this product for years, Very easy to apply with brush or roller also used this product as a stain and finished with poly. satin varnish on inside cabinets. May 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy to use Bough this to stain our new cedar fence. Love the color. It was very easy to use and clean up was easy. Made our fence look great. August 24, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Will not dry Put down two light coats 3 weeks ago and it's still sticky. August 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent product I replaced the wood on my deck, it was plain treated lumber. After putting this stain on my deck I was floored! Wow it looked incredible. I used 2 cans just for extra coverage. It stays clean even with 3 dog. All I do is water it down and the water beads off. It was easy to roll on with an extra wide roller. I put on the second coat 2 hot days later. I love the cedar color. If you look at the pic to get the dark stripes I used some older boards that were good that were just darker and then you add the stain and it is incredible. March 8, 2016
