Customer Questions & Answers

Will this work for a repaired basement with steel wall braces?

My basement was recently repaired and wall reinforcement braces made of steel were installed. The block walls already have a coat of old waterproofing paint applied to some areas. I don't have any issues with water intrusion anymore and don't expect to in the future but I want to use a good paint that will adhere to the previously painted block, new unpainted block, and the primered steel reinforcement beams. Will this paint work for me?
Asked by: Dave
Hello Dave, We appreciate your question. Yes, while this paint is not designed for steel, we've found that it can be applied to smaller areas of metal within the project area of mostly concrete or masonry. Please be sure to follow all label instructions for best results. Well wishes for your project! -Joshua

If Iused this on exterior new unpainted cement will i still need a waterproof primer? Does behr make a waterproof primer?

Asked by: Cardine
Hello Cardine, We appreciate your question. While we don't make a waterproofing primer, this feature in a primer is not needed for use with this paint. In fact, we recommend our No. 436 Multi-Surface Primer & Sealer. Please be sure to follow all label instructions for best results. Well wishes! -Joshua

Can this product be used on the interior sides of the foundation walls with a hair line crack and efflorescence?

Asked by: BOBBY
I think you may want to use a hydraulic cement product to seal the crack first. You could get water from the crack, and this product protects you from moisture, not flowing water.

Applying this sealer to concrete walls with metal reinforcements showing in some areas. What primer should I use for the metal?

The walls are in good shape just have some small metal pieces showing in some areas where the pours meet.

Can the color be changed (from white to gray)?

I am sealing/painting an exterior, below-grade window well (4x4x4 feet). I'd prefer a darker color (medium gray) rather than white. Bert

Mi basement has mold can it prevent it from coming back

Asked by: Luis
I can't say for sure but you have to get the mold off of the surface that you are painting first, before applying this sealer. I used a bleach water solution then applied the paint when it was dry. So far so good after 3 months time.

Could I use this Basement and Masonry Waterproofer over the stucco already painted with UGL drylock & then acrylic paint over drylock ?

I have a 20 year old block retainer wall which has stucco on it. Stucco was also painted with UGL dylock then painted with a acrylic paint over drylok. Some of the stucco is following off due to efflorecense and also has hairline cracks. When the stucco fell off there remained a white powder. How would you fix my issues(stucco falling off in areas because of efflorecense & hairline crack in stucco before using Basement and Masonry Waterproofer ? Also, Could I use this Basement and Masonry Waterproofer over the stucco already painted with UGL drylock & then acrylic paint over drylock ?
Asked by: cat
Hi Cat, Thanks for checking in! While this product can be applied over acrylic paint, none of our products should be applied where there is efflorescence. For best results, we would recommend treating the efflorescence before applying any paint. Best of luck with your project!

1-gal. Basement and Masonry Waterproofer is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 64.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Appearance and Adherence Applied to unpainted dark gray cinder block walls to brighten appearance of basement After a month, it looks fine. Did not use primer. Brushed on heavy first coat to fill in pores; this was essential to obtaining good coverage in two coats. Applies smoothly, but allow plenty of time--especially for first coat. Paint is very thick and difficult to stir. I bought a gallon at a time, so HD could put paint in shaker shortly before application. Basement is dry, so cannot judge water blocking ability. No bad smell. Good appearance and adherence. HD Memorial week rebate of ten dollars per gallon was a nice added incentive. I'm a happy customer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tough paint I didn't do a whole lot of surface prep for a clean are block basement wall. Scraped it with a stiff brush and put on 1 thick layer with with a cheap brush with a few touch ups afterward. Some of the block was very slightly damp from condensation and it was no problem to paint over it. I just put a fan on it and it dried in no time. It was easy to apply, went on easily but not too drippy either. After a week or so I tested the adhesion with a wire brush and it took a lot of hard scraping to get through the layer of paint. It cleans up and touches up easily. There was a very slight ammonia smell but I had no problem painting indoors for hours with this paint. Its great if you can ventilate the area but it does not smell strong.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works to waterproof basement walls IF you follow directions Surface must be clean and dry - any moisture or efflorescence and it won't adhere, no paint will. You also need to solve leak source - paint won't stop a flood. I used it on a leaky basement laundry room. 1st redirected downspouts and graded soil away from house. Then cleaned interior bsmt walls with UGL etch. Spent 2 weeks with dehumidifier drying out walls to bone dry. Skimmed with Sacrete surface bonding cement and let dry completely (another 2 weeks). Two coats of Behr waterproofer and basement has been dry for a year - had been damp for 20! Take your time, follow instructions, and this is a great deal. BUT you need to solve your leak source whether drainage/grading or water supply/downspout. Wife wanted it tinted slate blue (over my objections) and must admit she was right, color looks good. Also have used this under foam board insulation when finishing basements.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product! Finally I don't have puddles on the floor of my Michigan basement every time it rains or the snow melts . I applied 2 coats to the walls with a large brush due to the stones. It was an easy Saturday morning . No mess, stays where you put it. Dries quickly and no smell. That afternoon we had an unexpected down pour and not a drop made it through.
