Not satisfied with the results of the Behr Concrete dye kit in (Tuscan Stone) How to Fix??

We followed the instructions in full. Took two weeks to properly clean prep & etch our indoor concrete. Our concret was in great condition but had to use a ton of time to clean & prep.Due to tons of paint and plaster on outer edges by the walls. Application of the base coat went well. After first coat dried completley we noticed that the result was very spotted. After it dried completley we added a second coat of the base and it looked much better but still had spots. After that dried we perceded to the accent color. We were a little cncerned when pouring into the sprayer because the color looked more black then walnut. We figured since it was transparent it would dry lighter....No such luck : ( Its verry dark & not complimenting the base coat at all! Its very spotty and in some places looks like car oil stains. This was done in my living room and hallway. Any suggestion how to fix? My husband thought maybe if we go over it with sand stone color with a sponge that it may lighten the really dark areas.

Dear Tamster, Thank you for using our Behr Premium Decorative Concrete Dye. We are sorry to hear about your situation. Before we recommend a solution, we us provide our assessment and why the finish result in that manner. Interior concrete is commonly more dense and smooth finished. Unlike exterior concrete that is more porous and broom finished. Interior concrete is often sealed to help protect against moisture, treated with adhesives/glues for carpeting and sometimes coatings from the initial build of the home. All these factors make interior concrete a little more challenging for Decorative Concrete Dye to penetrate into the surface, which is essential for the right finish. The "spotted" areas you are referring to are pockets of concrete that is less porous or slightly sealed underneath. It is spotted because the Concrete Dye pooled in those areas. Your husband's suggestion to add a lighter toned color over the dark spotted areas may only darken those areas more. We will provide you a few options to help remedy your situation. Option 1 (Strip Spotted Areas) If you would like to strip out the dark spotted areas, you can use the Behr Premium Paint Stripper. Just apply a small amount of Paint Stripper on to the dark spotted areas. When the Paint Stripper coating wrinkles, carefully scrape off. Some areas my require more than one treatment. Please caution this option may affect the surrounding light toned concrete dyed areas as well. Also you may left scrape marks on the surface. Option 2 (Coat over with Solid Color Concrete Stain) If you would like to coat over the entire area and achieve even solid color look, use the Behr Premium Solid Color Concrete Stain. First lightly scuff sand the surface to provide a light medium grit texture. Then apply the Solid Color Concrete Stain to the entire area. Please caution this option will completely cover the Concrete Dye and will result to an even opaque finish. Option 3 (Light etch) If you have not sealed the surface, one option you can consider is to light etch the surface to remove the Concrete Dye. Dilute the Behr Premium NO. 991 Cleaner & Etcher ( 5 parts water to 1 part Cleaner & Etcher) and lightly apply on the dark spotted areas. Quickly rinse the Cleaner & Etcher off the treated area. This treatment will light etch and remove some of the Concrete Dye. Next lightly sponge on the Concrete Dye to the treated areas. Please wear acid resistant gloves, boots, goggles and have good ventilation when handling the Cleaner & Etcher. Please note if the surface is sealed with the Behr Premium Wet-Look Sealer, the Cleaner & Etcher not affect sealed areas. If you want to protect and not discolor certain areas, seal those areas first before treating the adjacent areas with the Cleaner & Etcher.

At what air temperature can you apply stain?

Asked by: JWW
Hi JWW, Thanks for writing in! It's recommended to apply the Concrete Dye when air and surface temperatures are between 50 and 90 degrees fahrenheit. Good luck on your project! Best, Jeanette P.

Can this be used over porch and walkway that has a broom finish.

My porch and walkway were previously refinish and finished with a rough broom finish.
Asked by: Smokeyjoe
Hello Smokeyjoe, Thanks for your interest in our concrete dye. Actually, this product is only designed to be applied to bare concrete and not over any previous coatings. Therefore, if wanting to use it on the porch, I'd have to recommend removing the broom finish then etching the concrete before applying our dye. Otherwise, you might check with Home Depot for another brand's dye that may work better for your project needs. Best wishes! -Joshua

Whats the difference between concrete dye and concrete stain?

Asked by: Jim
Hello Jim, Thanks for your question. I can only speak of our products, and there are two concrete stains we have and one concrete dye. Our concrete dye is a penetrating formula that must be applied to bare concrete or masonry. It's a two-toned product with a base coat of one color and then an overlaying accent coat of another color. This gives it a bit of a mottled look that resembles marble or glossy stone. The semi-transparent concrete stain, while more of a uniform finish, still allows some of the concrete color to show through which plays into the overall color. It also adheres by penetrating, though it also forms a film atop the surface. The solid color concrete stain of ours is primarily film-forming and resembles a paint in that it obscures the surface underneath. Yet, unlike paint, it allows some of the lines in the concrete to show through it. Please be sure to follow all label instructions for best results. Well wishes for your project!

1-gal. #CD-828 Arctic Black Concrete Dye is rated 2.5 out of 5 by 45.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Prep, prep and re prep concrete I did alot of research prior to my projectand bet 95% of those with bad reviews didn't properly prep floors before applying. It is time consuming but if yourconcrete is not ready to accept adye or stain results will suffer After powerwashing ,scrubbing, acid washing the floor was finally pourous enough for the dye. This part was easy but make sure your floor is completely dry! I used a 3/8 roller applied thin coat and was very concerned as very little color showed , 2 hours later coat 2, and next am final coat . Waited 24 hours and sealed with solvent. Based sealer. It looks amazing . If you prep right and remove all previous stain, sealer etc. The dye part is simple

We used this product to dye the floors in our new construction home. It was a new slab so we were told that we could put the product directly on the clean floor without stripping the concrete. We followed directions on the brochure (and followed advice given by Home Depot employee). The floors were sealed using the recommended wet look sealer. Within days the color has started flaking off. The dye does not penetrate the surface. It simply sits on top of the concrete waiting to flake/scratch/chip off. I bought and applied some super duper industrial flooring wax and am praying that that will keep it from getting much worse.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Upgraded Patio We bought 1 gallon + 1 quart to cover our patio. Around 500-600 sqft. The product itself is very affordable and easy to apply. We first prepped with an etcher and finished it with 4 coats of the Wet Coat Sealer ( A 5 gallon bucket was $120 and we ended up using about half). We spread it out over a few days, since everything needs time to dry in between applications, and the entire process took less than 8 hours.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Paint not dye This product is paint with all the disadvantages of a painted surface. This is NOT a dye. The look is decidedly different than that of a stained surface and as only one color was used the finished product looked cheap, spotty and decidedly more opaque than stains. The Behr sealer that needs to be used with this dye also looks cheap and very plastic, amplifying the spottiness and cheapness of the look. 3 days of hard work prepping the concrete down the toilet, all because of a poor product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from THIS IS PAINT - NOT DYE This product is not a dye. It is a paint. It adheres to the concrete, but does not penetrate it. We followed the exact instructions for use of this product. The finished result was beautiful and we were very pleased. However, the first time a work boot shuffled across the floor, a blister formed. When we rubbed the blister, the dye (paint) peeled right off in a large section. We scraped another section intentionally to see if the entire floor would do this, and of course it did. Behr was contacted and agreed that the product should not be peeling and that it sounded like we had followed the instructions but still suggested user error. They offered to send us more product to repair the now bare spots. We will be peeling the rest of the product off the floor (shouldn't be too hard) and starting over with something else. I'm very disappointed.

I did not seal it as I did not want a shiny or slippery surface. The directions specifically say not to use it on a pool deck, so I tested a spot with full strength chlorine and it didn't affect it one bit. I applied it with a pump sprayer and am now adding it to the adjoining driveway. As an outdoor product I would highly recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product was so easy to use and looks great We purchased the Desert Oasis. The tone is much less red than the Tuscan stone, which went better with our colors in the room. However, it stained very dark, which may be due to our concrete. We still love it and are amazed at how it transformed our room. We loved that this comes in a kit and had everything we needed. OUr room was slightly bigger than the recommended size (ours is about 350 sq ft) but there was just enough dye in the kit. The video directions were also very detailed and helpful with many suggestions. All in all, it's a great product and would highly recommend it!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I would not recommend I would not recommend this product. I followed the directions and steps for prep and application exactly. My concrete patio looked amazing when finished. It was so beautiful. An the places that have stayed in tact are still beautiful. However, this product peels up in little spots here and there leaving white spots on the patio. You have to be very careful not to scrape it with a chair, so I put felt feet on all my patio furniture. But still in random spots it will just peels up for no reason - no traffic, no furniture, nothing to make it peel. The smallest spot is just a spec size but the largest is a couple of inches across. This was a very expensive project since I dyed about 900 square feet of patio. I just hope I can somehow repair the areas that have peeled. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
