Last question. Are steps considered vertical surfaces for the dye? I'd like to do the two steps and landing up to the house.
Asked by: Mark87043
I think the step faces would be considered vertical. I did the lip that surrounds my pool and it adhered fine. The key is to prep it correctly so the stain soaks in and doesn't just run off.

At what air temperature can you apply stain?

Asked by: JWW
Hi JWW, Thanks for writing in! It's recommended to apply the Concrete Dye when air and surface temperatures are between 50 and 90 degrees fahrenheit. Good luck on your project! Best, Jeanette P.

Spray application? How about a brush or roller?

The product details indicate that this stain should be applied with a spray. Can it be effectively & aesthetically applied with a brush or roller?

why is a conical tip required for the pump sprayer? Instructions advise this, plus "do not use a pump sprayer with a fan tip!"

Asked by: Judester
I opinion is that this stuff is more like paint with a decided semi-opaque finished look. It is very hard to apply without strips and over colored sections with a fan tip. This stuff looks likes very paint like when applied even with a quality conical sprayer.

1 gal. #CD-828 Arctic Black Concrete Dye is rated 2.4 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Paint not dye This product is paint with all the disadvantages of a painted surface. This is NOT a dye. The look is decidedly different than that of a stained surface and as only one color was used the finished product looked cheap, spotty and decidedly more opaque than stains. The Behr sealer that needs to be used with this dye also looks cheap and very plastic, amplifying the spottiness and cheapness of the look. 3 days of hard work prepping the concrete down the toilet, all because of a poor product.

I did not seal it as I did not want a shiny or slippery surface. The directions specifically say not to use it on a pool deck, so I tested a spot with full strength chlorine and it didn't affect it one bit. I applied it with a pump sprayer and am now adding it to the adjoining driveway. As an outdoor product I would highly recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Upgraded Patio We bought 1 gallon + 1 quart to cover our patio. Around 500-600 sqft. The product itself is very affordable and easy to apply. We first prepped with an etcher and finished it with 4 coats of the Wet Coat Sealer ( A 5 gallon bucket was $120 and we ended up using about half). We spread it out over a few days, since everything needs time to dry in between applications, and the entire process took less than 8 hours.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I would not recommend I would not recommend this product. I followed the directions and steps for prep and application exactly. My concrete patio looked amazing when finished. It was so beautiful. An the places that have stayed in tact are still beautiful. However, this product peels up in little spots here and there leaving white spots on the patio. You have to be very careful not to scrape it with a chair, so I put felt feet on all my patio furniture. But still in random spots it will just peels up for no reason - no traffic, no furniture, nothing to make it peel. The smallest spot is just a spec size but the largest is a couple of inches across. This was a very expensive project since I dyed about 900 square feet of patio. I just hope I can somehow repair the areas that have peeled. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Waste of money We bought this product to stain our 500 sq. ft. patio. After cleaning and prepping as recommended, then applying the stain it started to flake off. Call customer service and they advised i clean off the areas flaking with a pressure washer and follow the same steps to apply the stain again and it continues to flake off. Don't waste your money.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Did not live up to the brochure color The color of the paint applied to the concrete did not match the color shown in the brochure. Followed the instructions, cleaned the concrete floor and applied the dye. The color in the can seemed different from the brochure. I thought this would be corrected once applied to the concrete floor. The color was no where to that of the brochure color. I am very disappointed with the finish and quality. I have used other THD paint for concrete floors and have been very pleased with the result. This one fails to live up the brochure color and my expectations.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Peeling and chipping away after using all the behr products for prepping dying and sealing, this product peals off with the smallest amount of friction. I used masking tape on the floor to paint my baseboards and the tape stripped the entire finish. this is NOTHING like stain. it does not penetrate the pores of the concrete, it is a more vulnerable version of paint.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Terra Cotta Concrete Dye Easy to apply in stages and looks great. Only complaint is that there wasn't enough of the cleaning and etching solution to do the job--had to by more. The kit should have had enough to do the job.
