Customer Questions & Answers

can this be applied to treated lumber? how long should the lumber be allowed to dry first?

I want to apply this to a new deck of PT lumber which is wet during installation. can this product be applied to the wet lumber or should it be allowed to dry before application, if so, how long? or how dry?
Asked by: Garr
Hi Garr, Yes, our Semi-Transparent Weatherproofing Wood Stain & Sealer can be applied to treated lumber. We recommend allowing the wood to dry out for at least 6-8 weeks before applying the stain. The dry time may vary depending on where you’re located, so you may want to contact the company you purchased the lumber from for more specific dry times. Having less than 10% moisture in the wood before staining would be ideal. Good luck with your project!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful Glow On Wood Fencing Haven't gone wrong with BEHR coatings yet. The All-In-One Wood Stain & Sealer really lets the wood grain pop out. Covers well, provides a solid film that looks like it will last. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Peels I applied this to two pressure treated pine decks, one 10 years old, the other 1 year old. Both were pressure washed before staining to ensure they were clean. Both had ample time to dry. I applied the stain as directed, in dry cool weather. It remained sticky the entire first summer and attracted ALL of the dirt to stick to it. Now it's already peeling off in places. I am so disappointed. We are moving this summer and this experience has lead me to decide any new decks built at the new house will be made from composite so I don't have to waste money on a stain that looks so awful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Product We installed our fence about 16 years ago and it looks as good as it did the day that we installed it. We apply Behr Weather Proofing every 3-4 years. We had to replace one post that rotted above the cement holding it and one fence picket that we split replacing the post. Behr Weather Proofing Sealer is the cure for premature aging of the wooden fence. Everyone in our neighborhood questions us how we keep our fence looking so good year after year. We give Behr the credit for the great look of our fence. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great water repellent My deck is almost 30 years old! It is surprising that it has lasted this long. I had a few boards replaced several months ago, but knew if I wanted it to last any longer I would have to apply a good waterproofing product. I shopped at my local Home Depot, who has always been helpful and attentive to my needs (I am 86 years old). They helped me choose the best product and I was thrilled once I had the product applied to my deck. It will probably make my deck last for several more years! Rated 1 out of 5 by from deteriorating in less than 1 month the product looks good and is easy to work with. it advertises that it lasts 4 or 6 years or something. maybe in a spot that is never touched. this is supposed to be deck stain and i put it on less than a month ago and there are already spots under the table and chairs where it is peeling up and chipping away. you can tell it didn't actually stain the wood, its just a very thin coating. it may last on the railing where it is barely ever touched but i am going to have to redo the floor of the deck every year. if i knew that i would have invested in a better product. note also consumer reports test stains by setting them in the sun, but no touching. so unless you want to just look at your deck and never walk on it or use it at all, i would have to recommend using something else.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What A Difference! We recently bought my house and the privacy fence was in rough shape. I wanted it to last for as long as possible before replacing it. We decided to go with Behr Semi-Transparent Cedar Naturaltone stain. The difference is unreal. It masked all of the blemishes and made my yard that much better. Pros: Quick & Easy to apply Nice color Reasonably priced Seems effective on verticals (fences, posts) so far Cons: Peels off after 5 months on deck boards The product states that it lasts longer on fences (~10 years) than deck boards (~6 years) ... and I live in the pacific northwest and there is lots of rain. I could allow that perhaps it wouldn't last as long as advertised, but I expected it to last ~ 1/2 as long, 3 years would have been acceptable in my opinion. Alas, after just 5 months I'm seeing large sections of stain peel off, especially in high traffic areas, leaving the wood raw and unprotected. My deck was brand new, so this isn't a result of poorly removed previous stain or dirt/grime built up that wasn't properly cleaned before application. I feel confident this product just isn't tested to withstand any level of extreme weather. When I strip and reseal my deck, I certainly won't be buying this product again. I'd hope it works better in a more temperate climate, but certainly DO NOT RECOMMEND FOR THE PAC NW.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Old deck...New Life When we bought our house, we were not sure if we could revive the neglected deck. This product not only revived it, but made it look new. We were saved from the great expense of a new deck. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
