Customer Questions & Answers

What kind of primer is required?

I see that this product requires a primer. Is there a recommended one to use? I plan to stain a concrete patio floor.
Asked by: NatPatBen
Hi NatPatBen, Thank you for your question. We recommend that you use BEHR PREMIUM® Concrete & Masonry Bonding Primer on your uncoated surface for added durability. This product is a high-performance water-based primer and promotes a uniform topcoat finish and creates a stronger adhesion between the coating and surface. It is easy to apply and dries clear. Hope this helps and best of luck on your project!

Damaged color concrete

we just had concrete poured and some fool contractor laid plastic over it and painted the kitchen cabinets, now we have white over spray on the concrete, what do you recommend to make the patio beautiful again? we were told a stain might be best
Asked by: ca1rob
Hi Ca1rob, Thank you for your interest in our BEHR PREMIUM® Solid Color Concrete Stain. There are actually several alternatives for topcoating your exterior concrete surface. Depending on the sheen you would like to achieve, may we suggest the following: For a satin finish - BEHR PREMIUM 1-Part concrete & Garage Floor Coating. For a low lustre finish - BEHR PREMIUM Porch & Patio Floor Paint. For a flat finish - BEHR PREMIUM Solid Color Concrete Stain. All three are excellent alternatives for coating your concrete patio. Also if you would like to remove the overspray, we would suggest a product such as BEHR PREMIUM No 992 Paint Stripper. Please follow all back label instructions to ensure proper surface preparation and application. Hope this helps and best of luck on your project!

Is this actually a stain or is it a paint? Does Behr offer an acid stain for concrete?

Is this actually a stain that penetrates concrete or a paint? If it penetrates I assume you would not want to use the BEHR Latex Concrete Bonding Primer, correct? Does Behr offer an acid stain for concrete? Thank you!
Asked by: Anonymous
Behr concrete stain is a stain and is designed to be absorbed into the pores of the concrete which should occur if the concrete is dry and etched. It is latex. See my picture on my March 16 comment on peeling stain.

Can I apply BEHR Solid Concrete Stain with a different color over an existing coat?

We just used BEHR's concrete edger, bonding sealer and then the Solid Concrete Stain on our porch and sidewalk. The color is Silver Gray. We applied two coats. It came out great but we're not sure about the color we chose. Can we apply a different color Solid Concrete Stain over the Silver Gray stain if we want to change the color to something closer to a beige or tan?
Asked by: Anonymous
I did and it worked fine. Just be sure to clean the floor thoroughly before you apply the new stain.

I did my basement some years ago and it looks so great and has held up so well that I decided to do my garage floor. I did not use the bonding agent in the basement but felt I should probably do it in the garage, which I did. I followed all the directions perfectly. I left the cars outside the garage for five full days. I drove in one of the cars – – the wheels were cold. After just 12 hours in the garage as I backed the car out I could see that the tires had completely pulled up the stain and now the bare concrete is showing through. Most unhappy .

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst Behr Purchase To Date I suggested Behr's solid color concrete stain to my contractors who were finishing our basement. They hated the stain by the time they were done with it and I was very disappointed with the finished floor. The contractors had to re-stain two spots on the floor but when they were finished, the stain was noticeably different. Now I have to find a way to hide these areas which will be hard since one is in the doorway of the bathroom. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Peeled Right Off Waste of money applied two coats to my backyard cement that had never had been painted and cured over three years. Cleaned area as instructed by staff in Home Depot and watched videos on YouTube. It's been a week and the solid stain is peeling off! Out the money, time, effort and now what's next? I have to scrap off?and waste more money to paint!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent concrete stain for exterior basement I bought this to stain our exterior basement walls which are concrete blocks coated with a layer of plaster "mud" which is basically concrete stucco. While the stucco helped to cover up the concrete block, there were so many discolorations across the surface of the stucco that it just didn't look good (see before and after pics attached). So I bought both the Behr Concrete Bonding Primer No. 880 and applied one coat of it, then waited about 18 hours and applied the stain. To give some contrast to our house, I opted to do a computerized color-matching of one of the samples in the store...slate gray #6695. The result is absolutely amazing! This really goes well with our gray siding and black/gray shingles. The stain went on well and we only needed one gallon. I highly recommend!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from beautiful coverage This completely transformed the appearance of our driveway. It covered up discolored and old concrete, making it look brand new. It definitely refreshed the look of our home. I would highly recommend this product for new and old concrete. We had an area of older concrete on the driveway that fed into newer concrete. After applying the stain they look uniform. We used the Santa Fe color and it was very rich and vibrant. Also, clean up and application was very easy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE BEHR I have grown up using different paint products. In the end, I always stick with Behr Paint. The coverage is so even and easy to apply. The variety of finishes and colors is awesome. I purchased a new house and tried to use the "expensive top of the line" brand that the house was painted with. I ended up having to use 4 coats of paint that still didn't cover correctly. I finally went back to what I know works, Behr! One coat fixed the whole job! When I paint my friends' homes, I always have a contingency.. that I get to use Behr paint. Love the product! Worth every cent!
