Customer Questions & Answers

Does this stain need primer ? This is not a new wood

Asked by: George
Hello George, Thanks for your question. No primer is needed on most woods, but “bleeding” type woods like redwood, Cypress, or cedar can discolor the coating. So, we’d recommend a primer for those wood types, something like our No. 436 Multi-Surface Primer & Sealer. Also, any surface stains that remain after cleaning like those from rust or mildew can be spot primed. Well wishes for your project!

Can I use SC-101 Atlantic stain on clean and now dried treated pine deck boards without using a primer coat

Asked by: Jimbo
Hello and thank you for your question. When using BEHR PREMIUM® Solid Color Weatherproofing All-In-One Wood Stain & Sealer, no primer is needed on most woods, but Redwood, Cedar, Cypress and other "bleeding" woods need to be primed with one coat of a product such as BEHR PREMIUM PLUS® NO. 436 Exterior Multi-Surface Primer & Sealer. However, even if you do not need to use a primer, proper preparation is absolutely necessary to achieve best results. You will need to remove loose, peeling paint, as well as dirt and grease with a product such as BEHR PREMIUM® NO. 990 Concrete & Masonry Degreaser & Cleaner. If chalk is unable to be removed from the surface, you may end up needing to prime the surface with a product such as BEHR PREMIUM PLUS® NO. 436 Exterior Multi-Surface Primer & Sealer. Be sure to read all back-label instructions, seeing as they will provide you with all necessary preparation and application steps, and best of luck on your project!

can I please see the blue color better? i bought several last year and want to finish this year.... thanks.

Asked by: butch
Hello and thank you for your question. We suggest going to your local The Home Depot to see the most accurate hue. Paint colors do not always look the same as they do on-screen, and please also note that lighting can affect the color of a room. Be sure to follow all back label instructions and best of luck on your project.

1 gal. #SC-101 Atlantic Solid Color Waterproofing Stain and Sealer is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 140.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Has A Serious Issue I have purchased 50 or so gallons of this product over the last 7 years to weather proof our home on Hatteras Island, NC. My experience has been that vertical applications hold up very well, but horizontal applications do not fare nearly as well, requiring repainting every 2-3 years. The product does not stain treated exterior lumber, rather it forms a coating on top of the wood surface, even when heavily sanded. The hard rain and the marine climate, plus staining of the paint by leaves and soil residue, deteriorates the surface and the coating peels off. This does not happen on vertical surfaces, even using the same lumber. And this product is expensive in the iniitial purchase, not to mention the frequent applications. I am now considering using a UV resistant epoxy paint instead for better adhesion. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Old fence looks new again!! We had a fence that was in decent shape structure wise but the color was so faded and gray it made the whole backyard look gross. I wanted to stain it, and found this product - it goes on like paint and covered the fence perfectly with a sprayer. We used the dark chocolate color on the fence. Looks amazing and brand new. Would recommend to anyone!! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Still going strong Behr Premium was applied to a 25 year old deck. This was the first solid color stain applied. Previous semi trans stains were applied every three to five years. The Behr Premium has been on for four years and still is solid, not pealing and washes clean with a hose. Very pleased with this product. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Didn't make it through one winter Bought this product, as well as the pre-washes. Followed all of the instructions for washing, drying, and coats to a T. After our first winter, spring comes around and now everything is peeling. It also warped many of our boards. I would not recommend. 10 years must really be a stretch, as we didn't even make it 10 months... [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from So disappointed! We used this product on our new deck last year. It is know peeling ion all the traffic areas. We brought this because it states 10 years on decks! So much for that! Very, very disappointed!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best stain / wood sealer I've used I have gone through 9 gallons painting old, dried, cracking fences that have been neglected for years. I can definitely see a major improvement to the wood after being sealed and treated with this stain/sealer. The completed sections look so different from the untreated sections. Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful Color and Easy Application I chose the Tugboat solid-color stain from the BEHR Premium Wood Coatings line when I needed to stain my deck. I’d read a lot online that you have to be really careful with stains because they can leave “lap marks,” but I found that the solid stain color was incredibly forgiving and I didn’t have a problem with it at all. It went on smoothly and dried pretty quickly, leaving the wood a beautiful chocolate-y brown hue. Within 24 hours, you can start walking on the deck (light traffic only is recommended) and by 72 hours, it’s fully cured. I worked on it a couple hours a day over a few days, working in the morning before it got too hot (and the bugs came out!), and it proved to be a really straightforward DIY project that I was able to complete all on my own.
