Customer Questions & Answers

What is the best grit sand paper for new wood and how much prep needed to use solid stain to get the most years of this product

Asked by: Anonymous
I always use 60-80 as I believe the others are too fine for proper adhesion. Prep is always the key to longevity. Power wash with a cleaner or stripper and neutralize/brighten, then sand if necessary.

Can this product be applied with a garden sprayer?

Some stains are very thick and will clog a typical garden sprayer, what is the viscosity of this product like, and does it contain any solids or particulate matter?
Asked by: Anonymous
NO, you will need an airless sprayer.

Adhesion to metal?

Will this product adhere to metal such as the brackets used to secure a wooden structure?
Asked by: Bigfun
Hello Bigfun, Thanks for your question. No, this product is not designed to be used on metal, even if it's a minor part of the overall project. For metal, we can recommend one of our latex wall paints such as Premium Plus or Ultra, granted the brackets are not horizontal surfaces. Best wishes for your project! -Joshua

1 gal. #SC-129 Chocolate Solid Color Waterproofing Stain and Sealer is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 211.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Has A Serious Issue I have purchased 50 or so gallons of this product over the last 7 years to weather proof our home on Hatteras Island, NC. My experience has been that vertical applications hold up very well, but horizontal applications do not fare nearly as well, requiring repainting every 2-3 years. The product does not stain treated exterior lumber, rather it forms a coating on top of the wood surface, even when heavily sanded. The hard rain and the marine climate, plus staining of the paint by leaves and soil residue, deteriorates the surface and the coating peels off. This does not happen on vertical surfaces, even using the same lumber. And this product is expensive in the iniitial purchase, not to mention the frequent applications. I am now considering using a UV resistant epoxy paint instead for better adhesion. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Old fence looks new again!! We had a fence that was in decent shape structure wise but the color was so faded and gray it made the whole backyard look gross. I wanted to stain it, and found this product - it goes on like paint and covered the fence perfectly with a sprayer. We used the dark chocolate color on the fence. Looks amazing and brand new. Would recommend to anyone!! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Still going strong Behr Premium was applied to a 25 year old deck. This was the first solid color stain applied. Previous semi trans stains were applied every three to five years. The Behr Premium has been on for four years and still is solid, not pealing and washes clean with a hose. Very pleased with this product. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Didn't make it through one winter Bought this product, as well as the pre-washes. Followed all of the instructions for washing, drying, and coats to a T. After our first winter, spring comes around and now everything is peeling. It also warped many of our boards. I would not recommend. 10 years must really be a stretch, as we didn't even make it 10 months... [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

I always buy this brand paint for indoor since it has big display at home depot. This time, I bought it for my outdoor wood pergola, and applied them couple weeks ago. After took off the paint protection cover on the ground, I noticed the dew in the morning formed on my pergola horizontal beam dropped on my ivory Travertine paver with the stain color. It has been couple weeks under north CA sun. The paint should complete dry by now. Now it stains my beautiful light color travertine. I rubbed on my pergola vertical beam and found it is no issue there. Then I read the reviews and found someone said it doesn't work well with the outdoor horizontal wood beam, but works better with vertical beam. But sand off all horizontal beams and reapply with other brand paint is a big effort. I am devastated and wrote email to BEHR customer support and hope there is a solution for it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best stain / wood sealer I've used I have gone through 9 gallons painting old, dried, cracking fences that have been neglected for years. I can definitely see a major improvement to the wood after being sealed and treated with this stain/sealer. The completed sections look so different from the untreated sections.
