Customer Questions & Answers

Can this product be applied with a garden sprayer?

Some stains are very thick and will clog a typical garden sprayer, what is the viscosity of this product like, and does it contain any solids or particulate matter?
Asked by: Anonymous
I think it is to thick for that.

Adhesion to metal?

Will this product adhere to metal such as the brackets used to secure a wooden structure?
Asked by: Bigfun
I sprayed the outlet cover and conduit with the stain and it looks great and isn't chipping off. HOWEVER....the project was only completed one week ago so time and torture have not been implemented! Also...I noted it really hung on the place where I got a little overspray such a one leg to my barbecue. It took strong goof off to get the stain off!

What is the best grit sand paper for new wood and how much prep needed to use solid stain to get the most years of this product

Asked by: Anonymous
I always use 60-80 as I believe the others are too fine for proper adhesion. Prep is always the key to longevity. Power wash with a cleaner or stripper and neutralize/brighten, then sand if necessary.

I accidentally bought (non-returnable) semi-transparent Behr wood stain instead of solid. Can I make the semi into solid?

Asked by: Anonymous
No, sorry two different bases. Acrylic vs oil.

I have always used Behr paint and have always had good experiences with their other products, so I did not hesitate to purchase this. I had a new porch and front steps on my elevated home and they were built with treated pine. I waited about 6 months to ensure they were completely dry and ready for a finish. Then I thoroughly pressure washed all the surfaces, waited another few days to completely dry, then applied 2 coats of this product per the instructions. That was last year at this time, and this "stain" is pealing and very scratched up now. It doesn't even seem like stain. It just seems like regular paint. How does stain peel? It seems that it would have actually stained the wood, not just put top coat on it. I sanded all peeling areas and pressure washed again, and then just applied 2 new coats of this product simply because I still had some left. I'll see how long this treatment lasts, and then I'll redo it with a better solution. On the plus side, this stuff goes on well and looks great right after application.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from False labeling. This is NOT 10 Years. More like 2 years at the most. All I ever buy is Behr ..... False labeling. This is NOT 10 Years. More like 2 years at the most. All I ever buy is Behr ... nothing but. Very disappointed in this product. I would consider this more like paint, not stain. Just like other users, I pressure washed, sanded and prepared the deck. It looked great initially. But, after 2 seasons, it is faded and has started to crack and peel. To label and claim a product as 10 years, they would had to have developed and applied this back in 2006. Hmmm ... about that?

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible experience. Painted after sanding deck in 2014; bubbling and peeling end of summer 2015.... Terrible experience. Painted after sanding deck in 2014; bubbling and peeling end of summer 2015. Repainted after removing/sanding affected areas and applying the recommended Behr All-in-one cleaner.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Long Over Due! It had been over 7 years since the last time I stained my deck. It was long overdue and the surface appearance showed it. We live in an area of the country where the deck can remain under snow cover for up to 4 months in the winter. It only took one gallon to bring it back to life and make it look the same as the day we moved into the house in 2001. I will likely ALWAYS buy Behr products for painting and staining. We have used them in every room in our house and most of the walls still look as good as they did when we first painted them in 2002. That is pretty impressive having raised three children in the house. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Heard some horror stories about his product, but assumed it was the way they cleaned prepared and applied. Had favorable reviews on line. So i purchased and follow all procedures to a "T" since this was a big project for me. Applied last fall at end of season. Deck has not been used yet. But areas are peeling off that haven't even been walked on yet this season. I imaging by end of summer it will be a real mess and eye sore. Unless I can power wash it off and then go to a Thompson water seal or something like that. Cannot recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great coverage I have completely refinished my porch, fence and back deck.. it has great coverage and dries quick,, i used a 5" stain brush so the first layer was able to get between the cracks and the 2nd layer did a nice finishing job on top. Super easy to use but not sure if any stain or paint will last as long as it states on the label, here in Chicago weather..will definately keep track! Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use and great results for an ugly deck I read many reviews and advice on using this or that stain. Behr stainds were often NOT recommended and at first scared me off. However, my deck is nearly 20 years old, the last time stained a long time ago, and I found an old can of the Behr stain in the garage, so decided to go with both the behr deck cleaner and then stain, despite many people advising, both in person and on websites that I HAD to strip off the old stuff first. Was not something I wanted to deal with! I cleaned the deck with the deck cleaner..... and then it rained for about three weeks so I couldn't stain. I did in that time do a fair bit of scraping off loose stain and a little sanding, but not to bare wood by any means. Finally two sunny days in a row! I quickly got that stuff on there. With a 4 inch deck brush, it only took about two hrs for 200 sq ft deck. Went on super easy. A few weeks later and still looks great! If it starts to peel like others warned, I will update, but as of now I am totally satistied. Gettysburgh blue is a nice bright blue. No way was my old pressure treated wood ever going to look nice as wood again, so I went with a happy color (reminds me of decks at the beach!). Use without fear!
