My deck has always been treated with Thompson red cedar stain. Will Behrs red cedar stain work on my deck?
Asked by: Bigkid
Hi Bigkid, Our Semi-Transparent Waterproofing Stain & Sealer would be a great option for your deck. This stain does need to be applied to a bare surface, so we recommend removing the Thompson's stain completely first. Once the old stain is removed, we recommend preparing the surface with our All-In-One Wood Cleaner (http://www.homedepot.com/p/BEHR-Premium-1-gal-All-In-One-Wood-Cleaner-06301N/203200559) to ensure the best adhesion for your new stain. Once the surface is clean and dry, you're ready to apply 2 coats of the Semi-Transparent stain. Best wishes for your project! - Sara

Can it be applied with a garden sprayer?
Asked by: Hercemur
Hello Hercemur, Great question. Our Stain can be applied using a high-quality pump sprayer with a variable tip or an airless sprayer with a .015 - .019" tip. Best regards, Kevin

can I use this stain on my new womanised fence imediately?

Asked by: clem
Hello clem, We appreciate your question. We can recommend this product on wolmanized (pressure treated) wood after the injected chemicals have a chance to air out which is typically 6-8 weeks, but please check with the wood manufacturer or vendor for their exact timeframe. Then, you would prep the wood as the label states before staining. Well wishes for your project!

Can you use these wood stains on rail road ties?

Asked by: Dave
Dear Dave, BEHR Premium Semi-Transparent Weatherproofing All-In-One Wood Stain & Sealer is not recommended for railroad ties. This type of lumber is typically coated with creosote, a black asphalt-like material used to improve weathering and longevity. Water-based stains will not bond well to creosote coated surfaces. Thank You

Applied stain as per Behrs instructions. The stain has a problem curing with staying sticky(see all other reviews with same problem, which Im sure Behr is aware of)) After recommended 72HR cure time. Its been 2 weeks and stain is still sticky, taking on stains from shoes and it gets carried into my house and gets on my wood floors.Behr told me to wash it with warm water and soap and it should solve the problem , guess what it didnt! still sticky.Behrs warranty is a joke as it dont cover labor ,which is 90% of the cost of staining a deck. Absolute complete nightmare. Cant use the deck!!

It is PAINT, not stain! I used it to stain my new, clean, dry cedar privacy fence. I followed the instructions and applied two light coats with a Wagner sprayer and back brushed if it puddled. However, it does not penetrate the wood at all, it is not semi-transparent, and now I am left with 70 feet of "painted" fence!!! The pictures tell the story. Notice on one of them you can see the Behr "paint" on the left side, and on the right side is a different semi-transparent stain that actually penetrates the wood and shows the wood grain. I will be taking my 4 gallons of "paint" back to HD for a full refund.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from poor coverage We were quite disappointed. This Stain does not cover cedar well at all. instead of a nice blue as is shown on the Behr and Home Depot Web pages, it was just a dull gray. the wood grain did not show as well as we liked either. unfortunately we will be returning this to the store and going with a solid stain color. This may cover a light pine colored wood only.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Deck Makeover At first I was nervous that we would only be able to replace our deck because of the previous products used. The original product was a textured product that is actually in quite of a bind right now due to poor performance. Anyhow, it was an absolute nightmare to remove. After several trash bags full of the chipping paint, our only option was a pressure wash. That still did not do all of the work so we had to have the whole deck sanded. By now Im sure that you can imagine the time this consumed for about 400 sq ft. Finally it was time to stain the deck and we decided to go with semi transparent because the wood actually had some good life to it. The first coat went on and I was not sure that I was loving the color, after a few hours the second coat was applied and BAM! it looked really nice. I will say that it did require an extra gallon but i kind of expected that. It has only been 2 days now but it is looking nice and cant wait to actually be able to use my deck again. Hopefully it holds up for a few years but as of now i dont have much to go off of other than application. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Four years ago I painted my fence with this product in the "chocolate" color. The paint has held up pretty well on all of the vertical surfaces (fenceboards). However, on the horizontal surfaces, the paint started to peel and come up after about 2 years and has almost entirely failed after 4 years. I would absolutely recommend this paint/stain on any fenceboards, but I would not lay this down on decking. In my opinion, it's not tough enough to handle the abuse that a deck is exposed to (UV light, rain and foot traffic), but seems to do well on fences.

We followed instructions 100%... it was expensive and not easy to apply but looked nice when we were done staining our brand new cedar fence in 2015. Within one year it was peeling off and has continued peeling. Our fence looks awful and now we are going to begin the labor intensive and expensive process of removing it completely or just putting up new boards before starting over with something else. I wish we had at least gone with a transparent stain that matched the cedar so it wasn't so obvious. I would not recommend this product to anyone.

Within a year it started peeling off of my deck! It was ok for pieces that were vertical. But any horizontal surface started peeling. I friend also used it with the same results. We both investigated stains before using this. All sources that we looked at including Consumer Reports had this as one of the highest rated stains. Through the 22 years we've had our deck we've used an Ace brand and Olympic. Both of these outperformed the Behr stain.
