Customer Questions & Answers

Does this stain need to be sealed after to maintain its color?

Asked by: Busymom3
Hello Busymom3, Thanks for your question. No, this highly durable stain is a standalone product so it doesn't need a separate sealer to go over it. If you'd like to add extra protection to the coating, though, there is the option to topcoat it with either our No. 985 Wet-Look Sealer or our No. 986 Low-Lustre Sealer. Well wishes for your project!

Drying Time between coats

I'm using Behr semi-transparent stain and wish to put a second and possibly a third coat on the surface. How long should I wait before I apply the additional coats?
Asked by: Anonymous
Our stain soaked in/dried really quickly. I would guess 20 minutes should do it between coats. I ragged rolled my stain on so I am not sure how saturated your coating would be. Good Luck!

application techniques

how to do it, what do I need besides the paint? can it be applied on a terrace and steps? do I need a top coat/? thanks
Asked by: Anonymous
Applied mine with rollers, you don't need anything much and yes it can be applied on a terrace and steps however be mindful of the finshings of your terrace/steps if screeded it will take less stain if concrete is rough complete coverage may require more stain. No top coat necessary.

Can I use a roller instead of a sprayer? I don't have a sprayer.

Asked by: Lily
Hi Lily, Thanks for writing in! It would be okay to use a roller with a 3/8" to 1/2" nap to apply the Semi-Transparent Stain. Please note that this may give a more solid finish compared to a pump sprayer. I recommend testing it in a small hidden area first to make sure you like the finish. Hope this helps, and good luck on your project! Best, Jeanette P.

Customer Reviews

1 gal. #STC-32 Chicory Semi-Transparent Concrete Stain is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 51.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Results! We followed another reviewers directions (BellaBee from 2013) and had a fantastic result! We tore the carpet up in our basement and rented a diamond blade sander to get all the adhesive off and then followed the same steps as BellaBee. It is KEY to do the proper steps for floor prep for this to turn out! After degreasin/cleaning then the etching/cleaning process I used a cotton tshirt to blot the first stain on which was Loden semi transparent. It dried quickly. Next color was Warm Shale. I grabbed another clean cotton cloth and patted it on at randaom. The last color was Chickory and I used it sparingly. We are thrilled with the floor. I ended up highlighting the cracks in our floor for interest. I let the stain in for 30 seconds and then dried brushed it. Fantastic! I also covered in two coats of Low Luster shine. We have received so many compliments on the high end look.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Overall very good It really looks great when first applied, and remains good looking in most areas painted except high traffic areas and high sun areas. These two areas, high traffic and high sun, need a fresh coat at least every other year. The remaining surface looks good for at least three or four years. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product Definitely a lot of money but you get what you pay for for sure. Take your time and read and re-read instructions. Goes on MUCH easier with a roller than a sprayer. 2 & 3 coats does best. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from NOT a stain, NOT semi-transparent. Worst product, EVER We used this on a large concrete patio. Followed all directions. First of all, it is a PAINT, not a stain. There is nothing semi-transparent about it. It sits on top, does not permeate the concrete. And it starts flaking off almost immedately. We had it removed by pressure washer. Cost us over $1500 to stain and seal, and another $1500 to strip it off. What a hassle. Worst product ever from Home Depot. Behr should recall this. Instead, Behr censors the negative reviews on their own website. DO NOT USE BEHR.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor durability I applied Behr's semi-transparent stain to a new patio (cured over 60 days) I had poured 12 yrs ago. I followed all the prep as recommended by Behr. I can't imagine a better/cleaner surface to apply this product to. Again, I followed everything Behr recommended for prep and maintenance as I wanted this to last. Well it didn't last one year. Every year I have to touch it up and put a new sealer/clear top coat on it as the chipping/peeling is terrible. It's like Behr designed this product so you'll constantly have to buy more stain and sealer... Absolutly hate this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE this concrete stain! Transformed an ugly basement floor into a beauty! I love the new look! Used one of the reviews (Thanks, BellaBee) as a guide, and prepped first, then rag-rolled colors on. Besides using Loden, Warm Shale, and Chicory, I also used Water Stone and Dark Charcoal. It's important to note there are no specks in the paint as the samples show. Applied the Wet-Look Sealer which makes the floor shine and is impervious to scratching. I've slid heavy furniture around, with no scratch marks!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Prep and Prime I've been a floor coating contractor for over 40 years. This product will perform as promoted, but you MUST follow all the directions re. prep and priming to avail yourself of the advertised properties. In addition I would recommend a clear coat for maximum splash and spill protections. I get the best results applying with an HVLP gun, and the results can be FANTASTIC!!! Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Stain For Driveway I originally applied this stain on my driveway (2 coats) and walkway 2 years ago after acid washing and pressure washing. It went on very easily and lasted well except for a couple of spots on some new concrete that pealed off because of RV tires. I recently put on two more coats and it came out fantastic. I changed the lines in the driveway and walkway to a darker shade which looked much better than the lighted stain before. I used the English Brick on the large areas and the Natural Henna on the lines. I have pictures on the Behr - home depot website review.
