How many sq ft will 1 gal of Behr Premium Wood Stain (semi transparent) cover?

Deck was previously stained but has been stripped.
Asked by: Anonymous
I used 1.3 cans for the two coats of about 400 square feet. DON'T BUY THIS STAIN - it looks like solid not a semi and stays tacky for weeks.

Appled in summer, how long before stained deck can handle foot traffic?

Asked by: jd105
Once it is "dry." For my family it took the product 3 weeks to "cure" and not be sticky to the touch.

Is this tranparent weatherproofing wood stain tint base used before or after you paint

Asked by: Barbara
Hello Barbara, Thanks for your question. That's right--this is a standalone product, so there wouldn't be a coating under or over it. Best wishes for your project!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from 11 Months. Not 6-8 Years After reading the reviews on Home Depot I decided to try the Behr Semi-transparent deck stain tint base. I chose the chocolate color. I used the stain on a 400 sq ft NEW deck and a 600 sq ft previously stained playset/climbing structure. I allowed the new wood to season for 10 months. Both structures were properly prepared according to the instructions on the back of the can and I used all the recommended Behr products. I stained both structures in the fall of 2015 according to the directions on the back of the can. After staining it took 3 weeks for the product to “cure.” For 3 weeks my children could not use the playset/climbing structure and my family could not use the deck. During these 3 weeks the stain was tacky and would leave visible marks if touched. After the product finally cured it repelled water and worked. This fall of 2016 (only 11 months after application) the stain was bubbling, peeling, flaking, and visible mold was showing. The product only lasted 11 months; 1 of those moths was the “curing/hardening” months. This product did NOT last 6-8 years as advertised.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Avoid at all costs So far I've applied this twice this spring. The first time I sprayed it on and it never cured (even after weeks it was sticky). I was told I must have over applied and should strip it and start over . After striping, cleaning and prepping again I applied two thin coats with a brush to the specifications on the can. Again I'm left with a very sticky deck. Now I've spent over $200 just to make my deck unusable. I can't describe how disappointing and discouraging this has been. I'm an avid DIYer and this is easily the worst product I've ever used. I wish I would have read more reviews before purchasing. DO NOT BUY THIS.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Deck Makeover At first I was nervous that we would only be able to replace our deck because of the previous products used. The original product was a textured product that is actually in quite of a bind right now due to poor performance. Anyhow, it was an absolute nightmare to remove. After several trash bags full of the chipping paint, our only option was a pressure wash. That still did not do all of the work so we had to have the whole deck sanded. By now Im sure that you can imagine the time this consumed for about 400 sq ft. Finally it was time to stain the deck and we decided to go with semi transparent because the wood actually had some good life to it. The first coat went on and I was not sure that I was loving the color, after a few hours the second coat was applied and BAM! it looked really nice. I will say that it did require an extra gallon but i kind of expected that. It has only been 2 days now but it is looking nice and cant wait to actually be able to use my deck again. Hopefully it holds up for a few years but as of now i dont have much to go off of other than application. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

I've applied 3 thin coats of this product to some tongue & groove pine beadboard planks that are going up on the ceiling (i.e. no foot traffic). If you so much as look at this stain the wrong way it will come off. As other reviewers have mentioned, the stain is more a (non-bonding) paint than a penetrating stain. You will be able to rub it off with your fingers or a napkin - I cannot imagine what would happen if this was used in a floor/deck application - it would not last an hour. For my circumstance it will do as I don't intend to walk on the ceiling - I just hope that it does what it's supposed to in terms of weatherproofing - but time will tell.

Within a year it started peeling off of my deck! It was ok for pieces that were vertical. But any horizontal surface started peeling. I friend also used it with the same results. We both investigated stains before using this. All sources that we looked at including Consumer Reports had this as one of the highest rated stains. Through the 22 years we've had our deck we've used an Ace brand and Olympic. Both of these outperformed the Behr stain.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great UV performance I have used this product several times now. Enclosed is a picture from my own cca 20 years old red wood deck. I applied one layer of a forest green semitransparent color. I had read negative reviews regarding this product but I do believe that peeling only happens when the surface is not prepared right or when the product is not applied correctly. This is a water based stain with a waterproofing agent in it. It must be applied like stain - I use much more rubbing/brushing than with paints. The surface must be very clean and ideally sanded in order to allow for the wood to suck up the stain. Water based products dry very fast and rubbing/brushing is important to encourage absorption into the wood rather than letting it dry on the surface like paint. I do have a negative experience with two coats with this product compare to one. The problem is that the first coat, because it has waterproofing, does not allow the second coat to soak in. It only thickness the top layer and tends to peel. The product, compare to oil products, is very color stable and does not fade with UV light. The color adjusted (faded) cca 15% after 4 years on my previous application, which is very impressive. Oil products usually fade almost completely after two years on decking in California. The deck in the picture was pressure washed then sanded down. three rotten board were replaced completely. No cleaning product was used in order to preserve the dark color of the sanded red wood (the washing products tend to lighten the wood) for the semi transparent effect. Although the green is an unusual color (very different from the wood shade), the deck has a very uniformed look even with the new boards (hard to tell which once are new). I would recommend this product.

I am a contractor and have used it on decks and patio cover and fencing. The fencing & covers it looks good and holds up for about 2 years not the 8 years it says. All the decking it peeled off in the first year on cured redwood. Yes I did properly prepare all surfaces. It does not penetrate like a stain it is a semi transparent paint and sits on the surface.
