I used 1.3 cans for the two coats of about 400 square feet. DON'T BUY THIS STAIN - it looks like solid not a semi and stays tacky for weeks.

Does product bead up in rain?

This question is from 1-gal. Semi-Transparent Weatherproofing Wood Stain Tint Base

. We just had our deck stripped, cleaned & re-done with the semi-transparent (in "chocolate"). They used 2 thin coats, as per instructions, 4 hrs. in between coats. It looks fantastic! It is raining right now, and unlike other products we've used in the past, the water is not beading up on this new finish. Is it supposed to, or were the thin coats of product TOO thin? If so, can another thin coat be applied once the deck is thoroughly dried out? Thank you!!

We also applied the semi-transparent weatherproofing wood stain in chocolate using two coats. I have noticed that the rain does not bead up on the wood surface either, unlike other products we have used in the past. We will keep an eye on it to see if that turns out to be a problem with longevity.

Hello and thank you for your question. The BEHR Premium Semi-Transparent Weatherproofing Wood Stain is designed to protect wood surfaces against rain, snow and heat. The coating is designed to resist water, however, this may not result in typical beading fashion. The surface is still being protected. Another thin coat is not necessary. Hi Barbara, actually you would have this tint base, tinted to the color you want, then apply 2 coats according to the instructions.

Rated 3.5 out of 5 by 128 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Does not last even 1 winter I stained a new deck in the summer of 2016 with this product and it is already peeling. Very dissatisfied! I used Cabot stain in the past but my deck builder recommended Behr. I'm going back to Cabot. April 15, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent after 2 years I used this stain about two years ago, on new timbers on a long retaining wall. Behr stain was recommended by the contractor who built the wall. The stain is holding up beautifully. The horizontal surface on the top of the wall now has mildew that needs to be cleaned, but that is to be expected on any outdoor surface. The vertical timbers look as good as they did when freshly stained. Note that I did prep the wall exactly following the instructions on the stain, using Behr #63 Wood Cleaner and applying two coats of stain. I doubt you can expect great results without prepping properly. I think the Behr stain did a better job than the Sherwin William stain I used on the deck. April 11, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Incomparable Product Honestly, I've used this for many years and swear by it! I would not use it for a deck surface, but my house is natural cedar log with cedar board trim. It's the trim on the house, but also on out buildings, including a shop with T-11 siding using a curry color. This is very easy to apply, looks very good, and is easy to touch up. For me, it has lasted extremely well, much better than several other products I've used. Now, if I need a stain instead of paint, it's the only product I buy, even if I have to drive 100 miles round-trip to get it. April 20, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Looks like paint and peels like it too I like consumer reports but they were way off with this one. It is now 4/2016 and I'm getting ready to again go through the very laborsome project of sanding, stripping, nuetralizing, and staining my deck. It is pressure treated and now nine years old. In 6/2016 I removed a peeling solid stain from another manufacturer. Lots of work to take to bare wood, but I was very excited to switch to a semi transparent. Well, this may say semi transparent but that is not what you get. It is solid like paint, and last year, less than two years old, it started peeling. Behr is sending me new stain as part of the warranty. That is good, but I would happily have paid 3 times the price for a true semi trans parents where I can see wood grain. That said, I'd pay even more not to have it peel. This is just a really terrible product. Do yourself a favor and use a semi transparent OIL BASED stain. April 18, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by waste of money I have used this product 3 times. My deck is 8 years old and 12' x 30'. Started with treated 1x6's from Home Depot. Now 8 years later I'm replacing all boards. At 30$ a gallon one would think it would last. I live in Arkansas, it's not like it rains alot. Will not buy Behr again April 3, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Poor quality It only looked good for the first year I applied it. Peeled off easily. March 31, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Worst Deck Stain Ever Applied this stain last spring. Now it is peeling, flaking, and fading. I am done with all Behr products, which means I am done with Home Depot. I will try to cash in on the "6 Year Warranty", but I expect that will be a waste of time. I will probably just be offered 2 more gallons of the same garbage. June 18, 2014
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Does not last 6 years, nor even 3-4 years Please don't be fooled. This product, Behr semi transparent deck stain/sealer in 1 does not last as advertised. Though we live in sunny CO with more UV exposure, I've had the application on 18 months, and its peeling in spots, as if it never bonded or soaked to wood. For 30$, save yourself the cost, and time for repeated work. I am now sanding, cleaning and starting over with a different product. Discussion with current employee stated UV might not make it last as long as stated. May 28, 2013
