Customer Questions & Answers

Our concrete is half red and half natural. Will your concrete dye work or should we use paint?

Asked by: Steve
Hi Steve, thank you for your question. Our concrete dye is transparent, so you will see the difference between the red and natural surface. We recommend a solid paint, such as BEHR PREMIUM® Porch & Patio Floor Paint or BEHR PREMIUM® 1-Part Epoxy Concrete & Garage Floor Paint. Be sure to follow all back label instructions and best of luck on your project.

Should I use the bonding primer under the Decorative Dye stain?

To help with the peeling or lifting of the decorative dye stain...would the Bonding primer work so that does not happen?
Asked by: Rochelle
Hello and thank you for your question. Adding the bonding primer would help with peeling or lifting, but since the decorative dye is transparent, the bonding primer will affect the final color. Etching the surface prior to applying the concrete dye will also help with peeling or lifting. You may need to etch several times in order to get to a level of medium or 150 grit sand paper texture. Be sure to read all back-label instructions and best of luck on your project.

Is it necessary to use the cleaner etcher before applying the concrete dye?

The concrete surface I am dying is inside an aluminum enclosure, and the only drains we have are holes drilled through the base of the aluminum. This results in very slow draining and liquid puddles fairly high. This will be an issue when I rinse as it will puddle and there is no way to protect the aluminum from the etcher cleaner. So I'm concerned it will damage the aluminum. The concrete surface has never had any sealers or other products applied to it, and I just pressure washed it and bleach it. What is the risk of not using the etcher cleaner?
Asked by: Brett
Hello and thank you for your question. The cleaner and etcher is used to create the correct concrete profile which will allow the concrete dye to adhere to the surface. A proper surface profile will feel like medium grit sandpaper. Without the etching, the coating may peel on the smooth concrete. Plastic sheeting can be used to protect the aluminum siding from the etcher and a mop can be used to help clean up. Hope this helps, and best of luck on your project!

Customer Reviews

1 qt. #D-865 Terra Cotta Concrete Dye is rated 1.8 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Peeling and chipping away after using all the behr products for prepping dying and sealing, this product peals off with the smallest amount of friction. I used masking tape on the floor to paint my baseboards and the tape stripped the entire finish. this is NOTHING like stain. it does not penetrate the pores of the concrete, it is a more vulnerable version of paint.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Waste of money We bought this product to stain our 500 sq. ft. patio. After cleaning and prepping as recommended, then applying the stain it started to flake off. Call customer service and they advised i clean off the areas flaking with a pressure washer and follow the same steps to apply the stain again and it continues to flake off. Don't waste your money.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Terra Cotta Concrete Dye Easy to apply in stages and looks great. Only complaint is that there wasn't enough of the cleaning and etching solution to do the job--had to by more. The kit should have had enough to do the job.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does not penetrate concrete This product does not penetrate the concrete! I used the Behr etch at full strength for 5 minutes longer than the directions called for. After two weeks of curing with the sealer on top, a chair scrapes everything off and plain concrete is underneath. This was a regular chair that does not scrape my wood floors. I will have to take it all off and start from scratch!
