Hi Catherine,
Thanks for your question. Yes, this stain can be applied to your front door. If your door has an existing coating on it, we recommend removing it completely before preparing the bare wood with our All-In-One Wood Cleaner, which can be viewed here: http://www.homedepot.com/p/BEHR-Premium-1-gal-All-In-One-Wood-Cleaner-06301N/203200559. Hi Sostratos!
Thanks for writing in, and great question! It's recommended to use something like the No. 63 All-In-One Wood Cleaner on bare wood before using the Transparent Wood Stain. This will not only clean and condition the wood, but also open up the pores which will allow the stain to penetrate. Hope this helps, and good luck on your project! Best, Jeanette P.

As most guys do, I read the instructions after I was done. It says to apply 2 thin coats. I never did that with a brush and it works good. I built a gate for the other side of yard and used a roller. I did apply 2 coats to it.

Hello Jon,
Great question. You don't necessarily need to pressure wash the new wood. However, we recommend using our All-In-One Wood Cleaner No. 63 to prepare the surface.
Best regards,
Kevin

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Horrible product, ruined table! I applied this product as the instructions stated to a brand new, unfinished, picnic table for my daughter. Less than a year later, the table is covered in mold!!!!! The wood is warped and expanded making the table unusable. Horrible, Horrible, Horrible!!!!!!!! February 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by It wasn't a bear putting on this Behr product! This Behr deck weatherproofing transparent wood finish went on easily. I used a paint pad for the top of the deck and a small brush to get in between the boards for a bit more protection. It was smooth, dried within a few hours, so that I was able to give it an additional coat the next day. It's supposed to last up to 4 years with a second coat on it. It looks great! Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Behr The Best I Power washed and my daughter and I weatherproofed my front porch,It is absolutely beautiful.Goes on nice, covers well and drys quickly..Used 2 gallon and the porch is about 34 Ft long x 8 ft wide. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Cover Bare Wood With This Behr Built a small deck for our back door with pressure treated pine. I let the wood dry out for a few months and then it was time to stain. After some research I decided on this product. I prepped the wood with Behr All in One Cleaner, power washed, and light sanding to knock down any splinters from power washing. Here are some pros and cons from my experience: Pros: *Product works well - water beads up on surface *Very please with the color *Clean up was easy - water base *Penetrates the wood Cons: *Can be difficult to apply - I am very meticulous and want my finish to be completely uniform. This product behaves like a paint in that if you are not careful your brush strokes will show but it also behaves like a stain in that it will leave lap marks if you paint over an area that has already been painted. Despite these drawbacks I was still able to get a finish that I am very pleased with. A couple of pointers: *Do not skip the prep work - make sure the wood is ready for stain (read the instructions) *Paint with the grain (this is not a wipe on wipe off stain-you paint it on and leave it) and complete your strokes. *Keep a wet edge and complete one whole board at a time. If you apply product to only part of the piece and then come back to finish it there will be lap marks - the part you did previously will be darker. *Do more than one coat (I did two with one gallon) August 10, 2016
