Answer:
I always use 60-80 as I believe the others are too fine for proper adhesion. Prep is always the key to longevity. Power wash with a cleaner or stripper and neutralize/brighten, then sand if necessary.

UNLESS THE PREVIOUS COATING IS ACTUALLY PEELING, YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE TO SAND ANYTHING.
latex stain is pretty foolproof when it comes to application. Just make sure you remove any mildew/algae and you should get years of good results. In the fall clean it and apply a weather proofing product such as Thompsons.

Dear Boss hog,
On new wood, use a product such as BEHR Premium All-In-One Wood Cleaner to remove mill glaze and to open the pores of the wood. Lightly sand the surface to remove remaining wood fibers/fuzz using 100-120 grit sand paper. Rinse thoroughly and allow the surface to completely dry before coating. Please follow all label instructions.

Hi John,
We do not recommend applying our BEHR Solid Color Weatherproofing All-In-One Wood Stain & Sealer using a garden sprayer. Apply 2 thin coats using a 3/8" nap roller, nylon/polyester brush, pad applicator or airless sprayer. BEHR solid stains contain solids/particulates. Please follow all label directions.

Answer:
No, it can't. this is a solid body stain. it has the consistency of house paint (thick-ish).
Normally the only exterior stains that can be applied with a garden spray are transparent stains and/or waterproofing for decks.
Hope this helps.

When my customers ask, I always steer them away from pump sprayers because they tend to clog and must be cleaned repeatedly.
A better option would be renting an airless sprayer from Tool Rental.
Ask for a tip with .017 to .021 opening ... designed to spray these more viscous exterior products. Read Less

Answer:
No. The base for each are different. You can try to load multiple coats but I doubt it would cover anywhere near as well as the solid. If its been tinted you might have to bite the bullet and take the loss but some Home Depot's management are pretty sympathetic so tell them your story. maybe , at the very least, you can get a discount if you didn't open it.

After application of stain, what about routine maintenance?

I've applied the stain - gone through the exhaustive process of stripping the old stain, washing and sanding prior to applying the Behr's Premium All-in-One Stain and Sealer. Hoping to get 10 years out of it before going though all of this again.

What can, or should I do, in the meantime in the way of routine periodic maintenance in order to maximize the life of the stain? (and to keep it clean).

Thanks

Over time, the stain may lose the newness of its look (yes, it depends on the type and degree of wear it's exposed to), so every few years or so you may want to clean it with No. 63 and then apply a single coat. If there are any peeled or bubbled spots, you can sand those off, clean, and touch up.

Answer:
After stained and sealed, only reapplying a fresh coat is required. The length of time depends on the product used and it's advertised longevity. Cleaning the deck with the use of cleaners such as bleach which kills mold and mildew.

Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 146 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great for cedar fences! We chose the terra cotta color for this paint and I used an airless paint sprayer to do my entire backyard wood fence. One coat coverage and the look is fantastic! Just like I have a new fence. The paint penetrated the wood quickly, dried quickly, and still let the wood grain come through. July 25, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Epic Fail of a Product The very first winter after applying this product it was flaking off in large amounts. It does NOT hold up to rain. I thought that I must have gotten a bad batch, so I bought another 5 gallons and tried again with the same results. I'm now $350 down and left having to remove the stain from about 1000 sf deck. I will be following up this post with complaints to both Home Depot and Behr. I'll also be switching to stain from Parr Lumber instead. May 16, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Greast Product Home Depot applied Behr 5013 solid color (redwood) onto my 900 sq ft deck in Spring 2009. After 4.5 years in Chicago, it still looked great, but there was some minor peeling / bare wood on the deck itself. A quick pressure wash and maybe 10 sanding spots, we brushed the left over latex stain (1.5 gallons) onto only the flat surfaces in about 8 hours. Looks brand new again! Great product!!! Hope to get another 5 years out of it. September 11, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great durability if applied properly!! Follow Behr's application instructions on the container. Power wash your deck first with a good cleaner. Make sure it's completely dry, and no rain in the forecast for at least 24 hours before application. Use a good quality brush to work the stain into the wood. Wait at least 72 hours to fully cure and give it another coat. I coated my deck 2 years ago and it still looks good, no peeling or fading. This product was rated #1 by Consumer Reports for durability. May 29, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Ponderosa Green - Great Product - Two Coats I have used Behr solid deck stain for years but last only about two... changed to Premium solid deck stain and changed from grey to ponderosa green. Great coverage but still needed two coats. I have a 1200 square foot deck with a 18x20 pavilion. What a difference ... looks great, this winter will tell how well it performs. September 7, 2012
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Nice Job on Pergola and Deck I have used this product several times and have found it to be easy to use and prov ides good coverage. I use the Pinto White on my Pergola and Cedar on my Deck. Solid colors do a wonderful job of covering wood surfaces and last for quite a while. Recommend using this product. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] June 24, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Didn't make it through one winter Bought this product, as well as the pre-washes. Followed all of the instructions for washing, drying, and coats to a T. After our first winter, spring comes around and now everything is peeling. It also warped many of our boards. I would not recommend. 10 years must really be a stretch, as we didn't even make it 10 months... [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] June 22, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Premium Solid Deck Stain Purchased 5 gallons of California Rustic Premium Deck Stain and applied 2 weeks ago. Application is very easy. Look is great and if history is a guide I should get 10+ years before having to re-stain. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] June 22, 2016
