Questions about transparency and durability

There is some color to the Natural Transparent finish, so why is it called transparent? The color is lovely, but I'm curious. Also, hope it holds up. Wish I had read some of the reviews of this product before totally relying on Home Depot's recommendation to buy it. As I search the net, the reviews are really mixed, more negative than I had hoped. Please tell me the stain won't start coming off in a year. The can says four years! Thank you.
Asked by: teamedup
It is what I would call semi-transparent, some color with a clear coating. It is not very durable, so if it will be getting quite a bit of wear I would try something different. I have had good success with Olympic.

After applying Natural-500, How long must it sit to prevent damage from rain?

Asked by: Anonymous
The finish must be dry in order to act properly to seal out rain droplets, and the finish must have been applied thoroughly to all surfaces of the wood to act as a uniform skin over the wood surface. Holidays in the surface application wherein some areas were not coated thoroughly will soak up rain water as quickly as any untreated wood. Natural rain events will eventually have a weathering effect on the wood because wood is a dynamic material which expands and contracts naturally with its own moisture content which can, over time, cause miniature fissures in the grain surface of lumber which then have no blockage to the passage of water on the surface. Read recoat instructions, and probable life of applied finish offered by the manufacturer. Locale and weather conditions vary across the country for probable weather exposure water levels and conditions.

Asked by: Tonio
Hi Tonio, Thanks for writing in with your question. We recommend waiting 24-48 hours for light foot traffic and 72 hours or more for heavy foot traffic or moving back furniture. Have a great day! Regards, Giovanna

Deck stains are never perfect - but I used this based on CR testing and am a bit disappointed. The redwood color is more like old pepto- bismol and it seems to look & feel rather plastic. Used it on my new redwood slat fence. Did some sanding but didn't see the need to clean since it was newly installed one month prior. Application looked same on sanded & non-sanded areas. Also took a few weeks to dry without tackiness. ... we'll see how it goes. Wish they would offer a clear product that you can add small amounts of toner to get a more reasonable color ... not the full pigmented stain which is frankly always ugly from most manufacturers....!

When applied to a wood surface, it will not dry clear (as stated) but in fact, leaves a muddy yellowish tint that is very undesirable, especially on lighter surfaces. I built and custom stained $400 worth of cedar planters over a period of 3 weeks and managed to ruined all of them in one day with this product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Looks good Bought this stuff in the Golden Honey color. Took roughly 1 gallon to do two coats on a 30'x10' deck with 4 posts. First coat went on smoothly with no issues using a deck pad. Dried fast and after double the recommended dry time I put the second coat on. Second coat dried tacky and took a few days to fully cure but it doesn't seem tacky now. Color is nice but it shows foot prints like crazy by the stairs. All in all this did a good job of evening out the color but you can still see imperfections or manufacture stamps on the wood which is obvious because its transparent.

I was very satisfied with the results. I don't know what our TX weather will do to it but hopefully it will last a few years. I am not a painter yet I believe one coat is all I really needed. Many of the cedar timbers were different colors. This stain blended them and brought the entire project together.

Each year I used a different waterproofing product to coat the logs on the outside of my home. I went to Home Depot at the recommendation of a Behr rep I tried the waterproofing wood finish and clear. Two coats went on very easy and the poles went from bleached out to a beautiful honey color. Thank you!

It looks to be a light beige in the can and does not dry clear. I put it on a white cedar swing and although my wife liked the color it dried to a yellow orange which really looked good but was not clear as advertised.

This is the third project I've done and the color hasn't even come close to what it was supposed to be. Luckily Home Depot made good on the horrible product because behr wouldn't do anything for me
