Customer Questions & Answers

Can this stain be applied over existing Behr semi-transparent wood stain applied 6 years ago?

Asked by: CM
Hello CM, Thanks for your question. That's right--a maintenance of the same product is okay as long as the surface is cleaned and prepared properly. Best wishes for your project!

do you need t use a primer first

Asked by: buck
With a wood stain your "primer" is surface preparation. Be sure to follow Behr's instructions regarding using a "product such as Behr Premium No 64 wood stain & finish Stripper to remove loose wood fibers, latex, oil-based and 100% acrylic coating on new or weathered wood. Behr Premium No 63 all-in-one wood cleaner MUST be used following No 64 to clean, brighten & neutralize wood. When No 64 is not needed, use a product such as No 63 to clean and brighten the wood surface and to remove light to medium exterior stains caused by mold, mildew, algae & fungus. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry before coating. On new wood, use a product such as No 63 to remove mill glaze and open the pores of the wood. Lightly sand to remove remaining wood fibers/fuzz."

is 3 months after pressure washing too late to paint the fence?

We pressure washed the fence 3 months ago and want to weatherproof it now. What would be the best kind of Behr product to use and if any special preparation is needed?
Asked by: Bestfamily7
The key is good preparation and a clean surface. Examine the fence to see if it is sufficiently clean before applying the paint or stain. I recommend using Behr's All-in-One Wood Cleaner before painting your fence. I used it to clean my deck before staining and I am very pleased with the final result.

WHAT SIZE ROLLER FILLER NAP TO USE ON THAT STAIN 1/2 OR 3/8

TO DO DECK WITH SEMI TRANSPARENT WOOD STAIN USE 1/2 OR 3/8 NAP ROLLER FILLER
Asked by: BRTUS
Behr states that "Use of rollers should be limited to rough surfaces only. Use 3/8" nap or longer when appropriate." It appears that a brush or pad applicator might be more appropriate for a deck surface.

5 gal. White Tint Base Semi-Transparent Waterproofing Stain and Sealer is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 141.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked Great for me I was worried because I bought this product before reading reviews, so all the negative reviews made me 2nd guess my purchase. I had a cedar fence built 3 months prior to staining, the wood was pretty dried out, even beginning to split, so I had to weatherproof as soon as possible. I did not do any prep that others may have done. The stain dried so fast that a 2nd coat was put on less than 30 -45 minutes later. I picked the Barn Red color and I love the way my fence looks. It rained within 12 hours after staining, I was afraid it would ruin my stain, but it did not. My fence is not sticky, it dried right away.. We used a professional grade sprayer to apply the stain. I'm hoping for a long lasting stain, so we will see, but right now I'm loving it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Go to for exterior staining/sealing As a contractor, decks and porches keep me busy in the summer and this stain is my go to product. I have used it on decks, porches and playgrounds. It is the best I've found when it comes to coverage, durability and consumer friendly uses and clean up. I've brushed and sprayed applied this stain and every time I have had beautiful results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful Glow On Wood Fencing Haven't gone wrong with BEHR coatings yet. The All-In-One Wood Stain & Sealer really lets the wood grain pop out. Covers well, provides a solid film that looks like it will last. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Product We installed our fence about 16 years ago and it looks as good as it did the day that we installed it. We apply Behr Weather Proofing every 3-4 years. We had to replace one post that rotted above the cement holding it and one fence picket that we split replacing the post. Behr Weather Proofing Sealer is the cure for premature aging of the wooden fence. Everyone in our neighborhood questions us how we keep our fence looking so good year after year. We give Behr the credit for the great look of our fence. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great water repellent My deck is almost 30 years old! It is surprising that it has lasted this long. I had a few boards replaced several months ago, but knew if I wanted it to last any longer I would have to apply a good waterproofing product. I shopped at my local Home Depot, who has always been helpful and attentive to my needs (I am 86 years old). They helped me choose the best product and I was thrilled once I had the product applied to my deck. It will probably make my deck last for several more years! Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works as advertised I put on the Lowes deck stain first, within one year the stain was peeling up all over the place. I then decided to try a different brand. IF you strip the deck, clean the deck and wait until the deck has been dry for several days, the stain will penetrate the wood and will stay. Stripping was the longest part of the process and took approximately 8 gallons the Behr stripper gel. Lots of elbow grease and using a deck cleaner brush was how I did it, and using a garden hose with a fireman style nozzle. It really will work, you just have to do it right, otherwise it won't work. We used the very dark brown color and it looks beautiful. Oh and another tip I have is, APPLY THE STAIN WITH A CAR WASHING BRUSH. You dip the brush into the bucket of stain and then apply. I stained our 2500 sq ft deck in two 1/2 hours. literally.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What A Difference! We recently bought my house and the privacy fence was in rough shape. I wanted it to last for as long as possible before replacing it. We decided to go with Behr Semi-Transparent Cedar Naturaltone stain. The difference is unreal. It masked all of the blemishes and made my yard that much better.
