Customer Questions & Answers

Can this stain be applied over existing Behr semi-transparent wood stain applied 6 years ago?

Asked by: CM
Hello CM, Thanks for your question. That's right--a maintenance of the same product is okay as long as the surface is cleaned and prepared properly. Best wishes for your project!

do you need t use a primer first

Asked by: buck
With a wood stain your "primer" is surface preparation. Be sure to follow Behr's instructions regarding using a "product such as Behr Premium No 64 wood stain & finish Stripper to remove loose wood fibers, latex, oil-based and 100% acrylic coating on new or weathered wood. Behr Premium No 63 all-in-one wood cleaner MUST be used following No 64 to clean, brighten & neutralize wood. When No 64 is not needed, use a product such as No 63 to clean and brighten the wood surface and to remove light to medium exterior stains caused by mold, mildew, algae & fungus. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry before coating. On new wood, use a product such as No 63 to remove mill glaze and open the pores of the wood. Lightly sand to remove remaining wood fibers/fuzz."

is 3 months after pressure washing too late to paint the fence?

We pressure washed the fence 3 months ago and want to weatherproof it now. What would be the best kind of Behr product to use and if any special preparation is needed?
Asked by: Bestfamily7
The key is good preparation and a clean surface. Examine the fence to see if it is sufficiently clean before applying the paint or stain. I recommend using Behr's All-in-One Wood Cleaner before painting your fence. I used it to clean my deck before staining and I am very pleased with the final result.

WHAT SIZE ROLLER FILLER NAP TO USE ON THAT STAIN 1/2 OR 3/8

TO DO DECK WITH SEMI TRANSPARENT WOOD STAIN USE 1/2 OR 3/8 NAP ROLLER FILLER
Asked by: BRTUS
Behr states that "Use of rollers should be limited to rough surfaces only. Use 3/8" nap or longer when appropriate." It appears that a brush or pad applicator might be more appropriate for a deck surface.

5 gal. White Tint Base Semi-Transparent Waterproofing Stain & Sealer is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 144.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from 11 Months. Not 6-8 Years After reading the reviews on Home Depot I decided to try the Behr Semi-transparent deck stain tint base. I chose the chocolate color. I used the stain on a 400 sq ft NEW deck and a 600 sq ft previously stained playset/climbing structure. I allowed the new wood to season for 10 months. Both structures were properly prepared according to the instructions on the back of the can and I used all the recommended Behr products. I stained both structures in the fall of 2015 according to the directions on the back of the can. After staining it took 3 weeks for the product to “cure.” For 3 weeks my children could not use the playset/climbing structure and my family could not use the deck. During these 3 weeks the stain was tacky and would leave visible marks if touched. After the product finally cured it repelled water and worked. This fall of 2016 (only 11 months after application) the stain was bubbling, peeling, flaking, and visible mold was showing. The product only lasted 11 months; 1 of those moths was the “curing/hardening” months. This product did NOT last 6-8 years as advertised.

Four years ago I painted my fence with this product in the "chocolate" color. The paint has held up pretty well on all of the vertical surfaces (fenceboards). However, on the horizontal surfaces, the paint started to peel and come up after about 2 years and has almost entirely failed after 4 years. I would absolutely recommend this paint/stain on any fenceboards, but I would not lay this down on decking. In my opinion, it's not tough enough to handle the abuse that a deck is exposed to (UV light, rain and foot traffic), but seems to do well on fences.

We followed instructions 100%... it was expensive and not easy to apply but looked nice when we were done staining our brand new cedar fence in 2015. Within one year it was peeling off and has continued peeling. Our fence looks awful and now we are going to begin the labor intensive and expensive process of removing it completely or just putting up new boards before starting over with something else. I wish we had at least gone with a transparent stain that matched the cedar so it wasn't so obvious. I would not recommend this product to anyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Deck Makeover At first I was nervous that we would only be able to replace our deck because of the previous products used. The original product was a textured product that is actually in quite of a bind right now due to poor performance. Anyhow, it was an absolute nightmare to remove. After several trash bags full of the chipping paint, our only option was a pressure wash. That still did not do all of the work so we had to have the whole deck sanded. By now Im sure that you can imagine the time this consumed for about 400 sq ft. Finally it was time to stain the deck and we decided to go with semi transparent because the wood actually had some good life to it. The first coat went on and I was not sure that I was loving the color, after a few hours the second coat was applied and BAM! it looked really nice. I will say that it did require an extra gallon but i kind of expected that. It has only been 2 days now but it is looking nice and cant wait to actually be able to use my deck again. Hopefully it holds up for a few years but as of now i dont have much to go off of other than application. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Old deck...New Life When we bought our house, we were not sure if we could revive the neglected deck. This product not only revived it, but made it look new. We were saved from the great expense of a new deck. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 3 out of 5 by from 4 Months later, wood is absorbing water I applied this on my deck, about 25 years old. The deck was previously coated with a waterproofing product from a different manufacturer. I saw the advertisements for Behr having longer durability than others, and I decided to give it a try. 4 months later, rain water is not beading, but appears to be soaking into the wood. I used it according to instructions, the old clear waterproofing product was off, and no water was beading on the deck. Applied two coats of this product, used just about as much as is suggested based on the square footage for my deck, so I assume the thickness of the application was was at least in the right ballpark. I should add that the deck is barely used. We use our screened in porch, and the deck is next to it, but I only go out there to use the grill, even though that part of the deck is quite large. I think the color of the product is amazing - the deck looks spectacular. The only thing is that it doesn't appear to be 'weather proofing' the wood. Rated 1 out of 5 by from waste of time and money This product is a joke. I too bought a semi transparent stain hoping to see a little wood grain. Even went with a really light beige color. It looks just like paint on first stroke. No wood grain can be seen. My deck was dry, no rain in weeks, wood cured and cleaned and the stain started to peel and flake in no time. It has been exactly 2 years now and it's so bad I have to remove it and sand and prep and clean it and go with another brand. The initial peeling took place after just 9 months though. DO NOT BUY! I even hired a professional company to apply it. Not user error. Had purchased 15 gallons of this garbage and now it's costing me more money.
