can this product be used on galvanized chain link fencing?

Asked by: rj
Hello rj, We appreciate your question. That's right--this product is only meant for wood surfaces, not any metal. For a galvanized metal fence, you might consider one of our exterior latex wall paints like the Premium Plus or Ultra Exterior paints. To prep, we'd recommend cleaning the surface of any contaminants, etching to attain a rough profile on the metal, and then priming with a product like our No. 436 Multi-Surface Primer & Sealer. Best wishes for your project!

Does this have to be re-applied every few years on a wooden privacy fence? If so, does the existing stain have to be removed first, and how?

Asked by: TRJ
Had it on deck for 10 years now... still looks good.

Can I put an anti-slip grit in it for the horizontal surface?

This is for a walkway that stays moist a lot - would like to put an anti-grip coating in it.
Asked by: atlmew
Hello atlmew, We appreciate your question. Our product testing with our No. 970 Non-Skid Additive and the wood stains has shown that the film build of the stain will increase, obscuring visibility of the wood grain and affecting the life of the product. Therefore, we recommend against using this kind of additive with our stains. For a slip-resistance finish, you might consider our DeckOver (especially the Textured one. Well wishes for your project!

5 gal. White Tint Base Solid Color Waterproofing Stain & Sealer is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 234.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from 11 Months. Not 6-8 Years After reading the reviews on Home Depot I decided to try the Behr Semi-transparent deck stain tint base. I chose the chocolate color. I used the stain on a 400 sq ft NEW deck and a 600 sq ft previously stained playset/climbing structure. I allowed the new wood to season for 10 months. Both structures were properly prepared according to the instructions on the back of the can and I used all the recommended Behr products. I stained both structures in the fall of 2015 according to the directions on the back of the can. After staining it took 3 weeks for the product to “cure.” For 3 weeks my children could not use the playset/climbing structure and my family could not use the deck. During these 3 weeks the stain was tacky and would leave visible marks if touched. After the product finally cured it repelled water and worked. This fall of 2016 (only 11 months after application) the stain was bubbling, peeling, flaking, and visible mold was showing. The product only lasted 11 months; 1 of those moths was the “curing/hardening” months. This product did NOT last 6-8 years as advertised.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Deck Makeover At first I was nervous that we would only be able to replace our deck because of the previous products used. The original product was a textured product that is actually in quite of a bind right now due to poor performance. Anyhow, it was an absolute nightmare to remove. After several trash bags full of the chipping paint, our only option was a pressure wash. That still did not do all of the work so we had to have the whole deck sanded. By now Im sure that you can imagine the time this consumed for about 400 sq ft. Finally it was time to stain the deck and we decided to go with semi transparent because the wood actually had some good life to it. The first coat went on and I was not sure that I was loving the color, after a few hours the second coat was applied and BAM! it looked really nice. I will say that it did require an extra gallon but i kind of expected that. It has only been 2 days now but it is looking nice and cant wait to actually be able to use my deck again. Hopefully it holds up for a few years but as of now i dont have much to go off of other than application. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Didn't make it through one winter Bought this product, as well as the pre-washes. Followed all of the instructions for washing, drying, and coats to a T. After our first winter, spring comes around and now everything is peeling. It also warped many of our boards. I would not recommend. 10 years must really be a stretch, as we didn't even make it 10 months... [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Still going strong Behr Premium was applied to a 25 year old deck. This was the first solid color stain applied. Previous semi trans stains were applied every three to five years. The Behr Premium has been on for four years and still is solid, not pealing and washes clean with a hose. Very pleased with this product. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Old deck...New Life When we bought our house, we were not sure if we could revive the neglected deck. This product not only revived it, but made it look new. We were saved from the great expense of a new deck. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 3 out of 5 by from 4 Months later, wood is absorbing water I applied this on my deck, about 25 years old. The deck was previously coated with a waterproofing product from a different manufacturer. I saw the advertisements for Behr having longer durability than others, and I decided to give it a try. 4 months later, rain water is not beading, but appears to be soaking into the wood. I used it according to instructions, the old clear waterproofing product was off, and no water was beading on the deck. Applied two coats of this product, used just about as much as is suggested based on the square footage for my deck, so I assume the thickness of the application was was at least in the right ballpark. I should add that the deck is barely used. We use our screened in porch, and the deck is next to it, but I only go out there to use the grill, even though that part of the deck is quite large. I think the color of the product is amazing - the deck looks spectacular. The only thing is that it doesn't appear to be 'weather proofing' the wood. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Deck Stain/Sealant Ever! I bought this product to refinish my deck after wasting my time using more expensive products out there, which peeled up after one year. I used two brushed-on coats on my deck. Excellent as a sealer. Smoothed out all splintered areas. Smooth finish and water repellant. Looks amazing. I need to look no further for the best....I found it!! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
