Not enough stain for two coats.

We were told we would only need one coat for approximately 1700 ft2, so we purchased 5 gallons per the HD sales clerk's calculations. When we got home, we saw that the recommendation on the container was two coats, which means we would have needed another 5 gallons. I can't buy Behr brand stain within 200 miles of my home. Is it ok to do one coat this year, and the second coat next year? How long can we wait before applying a second coat?

Answer:
Hello AlanM,
Thanks for your question. This stain actually requires the addition of tinting colorant before being used. As a suggestion, you might check our wood stains brochure for a color that is close to your wood color so that you could attain a more seamless finish to protect the wood. Hope this helps. Well wishes for your project!

Answer:
Hello Rob,
Thanks for your question. No, our semi-transparent and transparent wood coatings are not color matchable because there's a degree of translucency with these products which makes matching unreliable. The semi-transparent stain, though, comes in up to 75 colors from its palette. Hope this helps. Best wishes for your project!

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Shade I ended up using two coats for my pallet project. One coat worked well, you could still see the grain of the wood, but I wanted my project brighter so did two coats. Got the sample size and still have some left over. Its a great deal! September 20, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Used a lot of stain I realized after I purchased that this is semi-transparent stain which I think is where I went wrong. I bought this for a pallet project, and it used a ton of the stain. In the end I ended up "painting" it on and leaving it, which got me the color I wanted. It took about 9 coats before I "painted" it. I think with a few more coats I would have been happy with the color, but was worried with the sample size I wouldn't have enough. Still, the sample size is a great value for the price! September 20, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice color This was the exact shade I was looking for! The only problem I ran into is that pallet boards soak up a lot of stain. I ended up "painting" it on and leaving it that way which got the exact color I wanted. I realize now writing this review this is "semi-transparent" stain which is probably where I went wrong. Still got it to work for what I needed. (I used this color for the top of my project) September 20, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by garbage product. buying this will cost you 3 times as much in a year or two just to get it off I listened to the sales rep, then followed all of the instructions and had my deck completely prepped and ready to coat with what i thought was a premium product. What a waste of money and time. It is supposed to have a six year guarantee, it didn't even last a year before it started peeling. It seriously peels like 30 year old paint. Now i have to spend more money and time just to get it off. And the guarantee is worthless without original receipt. Who keeps a receipt for 2 years for a $40 can of deck stain? Either stand behind your product or don't. August 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Product Great product. Used this semi transparent stain on our deck railing. It last about 2-3 years in our North Idaho climate. Good coverage and stain stays suspended in carrier if you stir every 30-45 minutes. Stain in early morning or cool weather as stain dries quickly and results are more even when stain is allowed to dry slowly. Price seemed higher than I remembered from 3 years ago ($33/gal) but still a good value. August 9, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Deck looks great Applied Behr Semi-Transparent stain to my deck in Sept 2015. I had cleaned the deck thoroughly with Behr No. 63 All-in-One Wood Cleaner over the prior two weekends. The stain was easy to apply. We used a pad applicator and then back brushed with a paint brush. The first coat dried enough to walk across after a couple of hours, and then we applied a second coat to the horizontal surfaces. The new stain caused the deck to feel tacky or sticky after it had dried, but it was not a significant issue and was less each day until it went away after a good rain. The color closely matched my expectations and looked very uniform. Before and after pictures attached. May 15, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Coats wood like paint, takes over a week to dry. I purchased this "premium" product to put on my 3 year old construction heart redwood deck based on positive reviews and the display at my local Home Depot and have been extremely disappointed in the quality and appearance of the finished product. The stain does not go on evenly, does not penetrate the wood at all, and remains tacky and unpleasant feeling far past the 72 hour cure time listed on the can. Before applying the stain I used the Behr Premium 1-gal. Wood Stain and Finish Stripper, then used the Behr Premium 1-gal. All-In-One Wood Cleaner, and followed up by using an orbital sander to lightly sand the surface to prep it for the stain. I did everything according to the instructions on the bottles and used all Behr Premium products because I wanted to do it right and not skip any steps. I applied the stain using a high-quality Home Depot-branded roller and used Shur-Line foam pads for touch-up and small areas where the roller could not reach. I applied two coats of the stain, early in the morning and in the late afternoon, using a digital surface-read thermometer to make sure that the deck surface was within the appropriate temperature range for applying the stain. The finished product is AWFUL. Even after doing all the suggested prep work using all Behr Premium products the "stain" applies unevenly and sits on top of the wood like a latex paint. It has been more than 5 days of sunny Summer weather since I applied the last coat and the deck is still tacky to the touch and will not fully dry. I absolutely DO NOT recommend this product, and would not suggest ANY of the Behr Premium deck products. Since it did not penetrate the wood and is still tacky after a week I expect it to start peeling within 1-2 years and need replacement far ahead of the "6 Year Satisfaction Guarantee." August 3, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great UV performance I have used this product several times now. Enclosed is a picture from my own cca 20 years old red wood deck. I applied one layer of a forest green semitransparent color. I had read negative reviews regarding this product but I do believe that peeling only happens when the surface is not prepared right or when the product is not applied correctly. This is a water based stain with a waterproofing agent in it. It must be applied like stain - I use much more rubbing/brushing than with paints. The surface must be very clean and ideally sanded in order to allow for the wood to suck up the stain. Water based products dry very fast and rubbing/brushing is important to encourage absorption into the wood rather than letting it dry on the surface like paint. I do have a negative experience with two coats with this product compare to one. The problem is that the first coat, because it has waterproofing, does not allow the second coat to soak in. It only thickness the top layer and tends to peel. The product, compare to oil products, is very color stable and does not fade with UV light. The color adjusted (faded) cca 15% after 4 years on my previous application, which is very impressive. Oil products usually fade almost completely after two years on decking in California. The deck in the picture was pressure washed then sanded down. three rotten board were replaced completely. No cleaning product was used in order to preserve the dark color of the sanded red wood (the washing products tend to lighten the wood) for the semi transparent effect. Although the green is an unusual color (very different from the wood shade), the deck has a very uniformed look even with the new boards (hard to tell which once are new). I would recommend this product. July 16, 2016
